Phenomenon? Obamanon! (Updated w/photo)

January 14th, 2009
Author Troy Brownfield

As you know, Amazing Spider-Man #583 streets today. And how is the nation reacting to their President-Elect appearing with the Wall-Crawler? If Indianapolis is any indication, with wallets open, apparently. I talked to one of my boys at the west-side Comic Carnival location in Indy, and it’s defnitely been busy.

“We had a line outside before we even opened this morning,” he explained. More than that, they received “20 calls” before opening time, all asking about the Spidey-Obama book. We expect this scene to be mirrored across the country today as shops continue to open out to the West Coast.

The question now: with LCSs getting a nice boost of attention and a likely boost in sales this week, how does the industry continue to capitalize on this moment?

Update, New York City, 11:42am EST: Blog@Newsarama’s own David Pepose just dropped us this bit: “I just made it to Midtown Comics… and the line is a block long.” David shot the photo below from his location in line.

Via David, 11:56am EST: Overheard in crowd: “Either Obama or Spider-Man or both better be signing this.”

eBay, 12:08pm EST: Checking in on eBay, there are nearly 800 listings for the issue. After you wade through horrifically priced “Buy it Now” listings for as high as $500, and a couple of CGC-grade pre-sells, you find variant covers from sellers already netting bids in the $90 region.

Update 12:30pm EST – Winston-Salem, NC: (via Matt Brady) The local shop here in Winston, Ssalefish Comics and Toys was sold out by the time I hit the store at 11:45, or rather, was able to get in the store at 11:45 (it opened at 11:30). According to the staff, there were people waiting outside at 9:30 am, and by 11:30 am, a line of twenty or so folks stretched down the sidewalk, waiting. As folks came in after the copies were gone, names were placed on a list for second print copies, due in stores next week.

Update 1:11pm EST - College Park, GA and Chicago, IL: (via Newsarama contributor Lan Pitts) I woke up today with a cold, so after a cup of tea I check my usual websites and email. Though today a very special issue of Amazing Spider-Man came out feature President-Elect Barack Obama came out. I had completely forgotten! Rushing to my phone, I call my usual comic dealer Chuck, over at Titan Comics in College Park, GA. “All sold out”. While he did mention he will be receiving a second printing of the book NEXT week. So I thank him and call my local dealer, which really isn’t a “comic shop”, more like a book store with a comic section. So I call the Book Nook, and gentleman by the name of Ron answers the phone and explains that they just order 20 copies, as per usual. They didn’t know it was going to be such a huge deal and have been dealing with over 200 calls this morning about it. Once again, I am out of luck, though inform me that another local store is already selling them for almost $40.

Ridiculous. So, at this point in time I call a dealer in Chicago I know: Keith Anderson, from Keith’s Comics. And once again I am told they are sold out. To out there who got your copies, you are some lucky, LUCKY, people.

Update: 1:24pm EST – New York, NY: David Pepose here! I’m looking at eBay right now, and it’s getting pretty crazy on here. Prices for the Obama variant are running from $7.90 to $73.00.

Update: 4:45pm EST, via Atomic Comics’ Mike Malve: Well like we all expected there where small crowds of people waiting for us to open today… It was new ComicBook Day.. So that was not too unusual. But everybody was talking about the book and most picked up a copy even though they did not pick up the Spidey book.

We had already pre-sold our copies of the alt cover( we had just under100 copies) at $10 a pop. We started a pre-pay of the new second print and those are flying to all the customers coming in at this point. Seem to have to open the standard first print book and show Obama inside to help sell the book.

From Comic Book Ink’s John Munn:

People started lining up at 5:50am this morning for an opportunity to get a copy of the rare AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #583 (Barack Obama Issue).

An hour before delivery time we walked the line giving out numbered coupons for the number of Regular and Variant covers we were receiving of this special issue.

We told folks that they could only purchase one of either the Regular Cover or the Variant Cover, but please not both.  That way there would be more opportunities for others later in the day!

While the final variant (of over 30) sold out at 1:15pm, we still have copies of the regular cover in stock.

We are also reminding everyone that a second printing of the Barack Obama cover is coming soon and they can even use their coupon to help purchase that equally collectible issue!

We are going to continue to give out coupons all day, with an OB symbol on them to track folks that might visit us again.  This has been an incredible event and we are proud to be part of the excitement of this Historic Event!!

We’re looking to keep this update rolling – so what’s your story at your shop today?

  1. Mike Lorah Says:

Marvel should publish a monthly “Spider-Man Celebrity Team-Up,” where Obama, Stephen Colbert, Jay Leno, Dave Letterman, Sarah Palin, Samuel L. Jackson, Freddie Prinz Jr. and dozens of other famous types can appear, thus providing plenty of fodder for CNN and entertainment news outlets to pimp comics!

Imagine the sales on the Spider-Man/case of American Idol issue!

  2. JFleece Says:

Now, I love comics, and I’m pleased about anything that gets people buying comics, and I’m a fan and supporter of Obama, but . . .

Does the frenzy over this particular comic strike anyone else as being kind of ridiculous?

  3. Hokey Says:

Its too bad Savage Dragon can’t get lines like that. It’s a much better comic and did the Obama “fist bump” thing last year.

  4. Alexa Says:

If these shops have any business sense, they will be giving these people coupons or free comics or anything to get them to COME BACK.

  5. Simon DelMonte Says:

it just occurred to me that Final Crisis 6 is out today, too. Once again, Marvel will do anything to not only sell books but to steal DC’s thunder.

Since I am not buying either, though, I just shake my head at the nonsense that is the upper end of the comic book sales chart.

  6. Jimmy Says:

The funny thing is that the next issue of Spider-Man will fall back to its falling sales pattern.

  7. Jomma Says:

“Final Crisis 6 is out today, too. Once again, Marvel will do anything to not only sell books but to steal DC’s thunder.”

You know something? I’m a huge DC guy and been loyal for 20 years. If this gimmick from Marvel sells more than DC. Than Props to Marvel. Final Crisis is a complete catastrophe! The only ones who worship that comic are rabid Morrison fanboys. Ask the average comic reader and they’ll tell you is complicated, confusing, hard to follow,

So props to Marvel for making things simple and cheesy. This is one DC guy that just had it with Morrison and Didio.

  8. GOOF Says:

Yet another sign armagedon is just around the corner.

  9. Weegee123 Says:

hahahahhahahahah! I walked into my “smalltown” comic shop this morning to get the *VERY DISAPPOINTING* FC #6.
here’s the rest of my visit.
“Hey. you have the Obama variant?”
    “yeah.”
    “Can I get one?”
    “Sure.”
that was easy. And $90 is WAY too high. It’ll subside when the 2nd-10th printings come out. Just another curiosity like Death of Cap.
Oh yeah, anyone know how to tell the first from the rest of the printings?

  10. David Pepose Says:

@GOOF: Actually, what’s around the corner is the back of the line.

  11. Son Of Baldwin Says:

My story from New York, NY:

    http://sonofbaldwin.blogspot.com/2009/01/something-like-phenomenon.html

  12. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

Alexa has touched it with a pin – I’m far more interested to hear how stores will be able to find ways to make these people stay and buy more, or at least come back when it ain’t so crowded.

Most stores will have the comic by the register and sigh in relief when the potential new customers leave.

Hoping for some success stories over and above “We moved 500 copies”

  13. TimGunn Says:

So how many of these people in line are fans who want to see Spidey and Obama, and how many are speculators? It’s X-Men #1 all over again.

  14. durkadurka Says:

Did everybody who waited in line realize it was only a 5-page back-up story? I mean, it seems really ridiculous for somebody to pay assloads of money for 5 pages of something that’s just, as the writer said, “fun.” And maybe it’s just me, but from the preview images on here it looks like Spidey’s rocking Leno’s chin.

  15. Ryan Higgins Says:

Like most stores, we got 0 copies, because I’m sick of the random hoops Marvel makes retailers jump through. Got a sign-up sheet for the 2nd print, and a few people are interested.

The only people making out on this are the ones selling it on eBay. Another black eye for Marvel, and comics in general.

  16. B_AM1 Says:

I went to pick up my books, and was blind sided when a line started to form out side the store. It was funny. My store only had the book without the Obama image on the cover and, only one issue per person until they run out. I grabbed on to one at the counter. I was some what PISSED to flip through the book for the 05 pages of backup story that all this fuss was about. Marvel made its money this week off of it. I give them credit for that. As for the story in the book..I could of had a V-8.

  17. Brain_Fish Says:

Graham Crackers Comics, Downers Grove, IL:

It took us 2 minutes from opening the doors to sell out of the Obama variant cover and an hour and 15 minutes to sell out of the regular cover… Thanks a bunch for the heads up, Marvel!

  18. Captain Temerity Says:

This reeks of the same thing that happened with Captain America being shot. No one knew anything about it from the solicitations, so Comic Shop owners ordered blind. Marvel didn’t overprint to compensate, so they were left without books to sell as people ran into their shops in droves, many of them not regular comics buyers, and turned away at the door.

As I recall, last time Wizard was one of the only success stories, and that’s because they knew ahead of time what was happening, and sold their massive stocks of the books online for huge markups.

Marvel does the industry no favors with their lack of information in their solicits. Even when a “stunt” like this brings in new customers, not being able to get them what they’re hunting for disappoints them enough that they have no reason to come back. Even a week of waiting means that all the news stories will have died down, the speculators will pay the overpriced markings on EBay and such, and we gain zero new fans.

Even the regulars who do come in each week, that maybe walked away from Spiderman due to OMD and BND, that maybe would give the book another chance with this issue… they’re not going to be able to find it either. So, again, nothing gained.

  19. Yowza Says:

“Prices for the Obama variant are running from $7.90 to $73.00. Get ‘em while they’re hot!”

Why? Captain America #25 caused quite a stir on it’s first day, especially on eBay and the secondary market…but a couple months later you could get one for regular price again. And, nearly 2 years later, they still just fetch cover price. This Obama issue and it’s variants will do the same. That being said, I ordered mine 2 months ago so I wouldn’t have to put up with all this hub-bub.

  20. Jorell Rivera Says:

Oh come on there better not be a line when I get to Midtown today. Maybe I should just go to the Lexington ave. store. No one’s ever there.

  21. Phylemon Says:

If this publicity stunt about the most over-hyped farce of a politician in American History keeps me from getting my ASM in a timely manner, I’m going to be really annoyed.

  22. People Are Morons Says:

Any FOOL who pays more than cover price for this hype isn’t worthy of having money to spend. In a few months, this book will be on Ebay STRUGGLING to get cover price.

It’s crap like this that makes me hope and pray for the downfall of comics in general. The crash in the 90′s almost did it in…Maybe by the end of 2009 ALL comic book stores will be closed down for good.

Save that markup money comic shops…you’ll need it for your new job/business. LOL

  23. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

In their zeal to get the book out before the inauguration (while the bloom was still on the rose), Marvel has not done NEARLY enough to get sufficient copies of the issue out there. “Come back in a week” will result in a goodly percentage of those people not to bother, or go the way of Ebay.

I said it before; Marvel could have done worse than to, say, double or even triple everyone’s order, fully returnable, in an attempt to make sure there were enough of these books out there. This is exactly as I’d predicted – the vast majority of stores weren’t given anything close to enough warning for this book, and were caught with their proverbial pants down. Opportunity lost.

  24. gohanwinner Says:

I really don’t get why this is selling so much. It’s good for the businesses and Marvel no doubt, but I just don’t it! Not upset over marvel for doing it, because comic characters have met presidents before, but wow, it’s hard to believe it’s selling out so much and actually making lines?

I have to wonder if something like this could happen with any other president elect. Not necessarily the ones that ran this year, just in general.

  25. jedifish Says:

My LCS was sold out of their Obama covers by Noon, at $35 a pop. Still had regular covers. He had a lot of people calling and stopping in while I was there.

Good for him, but I hate the fact it’s going to give this Brand New Day crap a bump in sales.

  26. Mr. Gustafson Says:

Here at Jim Hanley’s Universe in New York, we were selling the Obama variant (and normal cover) at cover price. We Live-Blogged the release (check out http://jhuniverse.blogspot.com/search/label/top%20stories ) and NY1, a local 24 hour cable news station, had live reports. It was quite cold, but a lot of fun. We’ll have photos and video up on our blog later tonight.

  27. new york guy Says:

I promised the guy/girl shopowner I bought it from in New York not to mention that I bought one of the store’s copies, which are behind the register for regular customers, but they were fine with anonymously admitting.

I paid cover price, which is what they were charging the regular customers. If any are left over after today’s regulars, they’ll be on the stands for cover until they’re gone.

He/she also said that “marvel completely screwed us over” and “this is the sort of stupidity that nearly destroyed this business in the 90′s.” According to him/her, “Marvel should be printing these things until the ink runs out, especially when so few of us have copies.”

Oh, and blog@newsarama? Fix your comment leaving problem. No other comics website is like this except for yours.

  28. Dave Says:

But Philemon, Sarah Palin didn’t have anything to do with this issue at all!

  29. Pat Says:

Regardless of what you think of Barack Obama or the merits of this issue, I do agree with posters who have suggested retailers should be on board with this. If I were a comic shop owner I’d be scrambling to get stacks of books like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns to the front of the store with signs like “Read the book before you see the most anticipated movie of 2009!” or “One of the sources for blockbuster hit The Dark Knight!” This may be a mindless publicity stunt, but it’s selling comics and bringing people who aren’t regulars into comic shops, and it would be stupid to not try to take advantage of that.

  30. GOOF Says:

Does anyone else snicker when they hear the term “inaugural balls”?

  31. PhoenixPhan Says:

    Hey PeopleAreMorons:
Hopefully you lose your job and are on the street begging for change, because wanting people to lose their income over a comic you could care less about makes YOU the moron.

  32. Larry Doherty Says:

We had a line at 9am that initial rush generated $139. All the “civilians” were there for one thing. The worlds first “event variant”.The shop is clean, friendly and well stocked with the Magic item most stores missed. We have a shelf stocked in depth with regular editions, Variants, Savage dragons, idw’s and ASM essential #1 (presidents fave) Current ebay market is $40. We have the variant for $10 limit 1. regular cover at cover price limit 1. Some are happy, every other person is enraged by the price, the limit or life. Getting any type of add on sale is like pulling teeth, getting the civvies to take my bounce-back discount coupon is even harder than trying to capture their contact info for FCBD. It just ain’t happening.
Its a packed Wednesday for the regular customers (all of which can have their fill of theese books at cover plus regular discount) , who are enjoying the civilian scramble. Many are being interviewed and photographed by local media. I expect to be out (675) by close.
Tonight I will sleep like a baby knowing that most of the new faces that visited my wonderful world will never return.

  33. Ryan Alex Says:

I hope Marvel sent a copy to Obama since they’re making all this money off of him.

  34. Sano Says:

I have the issue reserved at Midtown, looks like I’ll still have to get on that long ass line ooh…

  35. Astrobrain Says:

I’m the owner of Astrobrain Comics in Birmingham, Alabama. Astrobrain is a new comic book store. Been open MAYBE two months. My first issue of Spidey was #576. That is, I missed the #575 order deadline by one issue. That is to say I didn’t get any Obama variants. That is to say I’ve been turning potential customers away all day. There is nothing — NOTHING — more depressing than turning a potentially new customer away because you don’t have something they want when it’s not your fault that you don’t have it and you’re the owner of a new store. I feel loved. I really do.

  36. GOOF Says:

On the early news, they had the local news girl at the neighborhood comic shop holding a copy of Amazing Spider-Man #583 and the best part was, there was nobody there except some skate punks in the background making obscene gestures. Classic.

  37. Tom Daylight Says:

Does this article refer specifically to the variant cover edition, or the regular one as well?

  38. Steve Ekstrom Says:

Yeah–I live in Po-dunk, Georgia and we had some folks crawling out of the wood work at the local shop, Kool Comics, today. Andre’s phone kept ringing–and sadly, because of HOW you obtained your Obama variants…he didn’t have anything to sell folks. He was selling what few copies of Amazing (non-variant) at a premium.

  39. Sean W Says:

I thought it was out next week (the day after the inauguration) to be honest.

Anyway, I didn’t see the issue and I didn’t see any lines or larges crowds in the 2 stores I went to in Boston (visited first store at 10, when it opened; second at 12:30).

  40. Robert J Says:

Marvel allowed a two day window for retailers to order the 1st print…Diamond Comics had no time to publish the info. You read about it in a newsletter e-mail. When Diamond took 2nd print orders…that was 4-5 days. The day it closed…the orders were placed…the 2nd print books arrived at Diamond the next day. It would seem that 1st and 2nd print books arrived the same day, only the 2nd print books couldn’t ship to retailers until the 21st. Way to create a collectible Marvel! I guess I’ll read your e-mails for you surprises!!!

  41. Craig Says:

I just got back from my LCS and they still had a whole lot of them left. I flipped through…the art looked like crap, so I put it down…

  42. Kevin Says:

I think the short-notice of this meant a lot of comic shops missed out on an opportunity to better promote their stores. I was kind of surprised that Midtown, who is normally good about this sort of thing, didn’t have some kind of takeaway bag insert encouraging first-time visitors to return.

    http://nosleep-nyc.blogspot.com/2009/01/crowds-line-up-for-spidey-obama-team-up.html

  43. Michael Says:

    @ Alex Ryan

Really? Is Marvel making so much money off this? Are the retailers selling the copy for $10 a pop on street date sending Marvel an extra 150% of their cost for the book? I mean, they are charging that much more than cover price, where does the money go? I guarantee not back to Marvel.

Luckily, I can trust my LCS not to gouge for the issue.

  44. Ryan Says:

I thought the 90′s were so bad and Marvel went chapter 11 because of this sort of thing.

  45. napdyno Says:

I’m pissed at my LCS. Despite having Amazing Spider-Man on my pull list for the past 5 years, somehow my copy was “missing” this week. Didn’t even know about the Obama thing until I went in for my weekly purchase. No way I’m paying more than cover for this.

  46. Jim Says:

In four years wen he has run this country into the dirt, how much will they be worth?

  47. Tirpitz Says:

This comic is indicative to me of everything that is wrong with the media at large (both print and video), and the fact that there is a sycophantic reaction from the public towards this guy. I sometimes feel like I am the only soul out here who will not jump on the “Obama will change everything!” bandwagon. It isn’t called the first 100 days for no good reason. I want to think that the guy will make things happen, but the expectations for his presidency are so high, that the inevitable come down will be a bit too much for a lot of folks.

Turning him into a quick buck is just bad form. I always hated these types of books.

  48. G Says:

Hey Jim, In case you haven’t noticed, the country’s already in the dirt. I thought this was a forum about comics. Geezus…

  49. Aqualad Says:

I’m not sure why people are equating this with the go-go early 90′s foil-hologram-platinum-variant craze. It may be a gimmick cover stunt, but there are plenty of copies with the normal cover available. They’re doing a second printing next week, with the Obama cover. It’s not that big a deal.

  50. thespider Says:

This does remind me of the 80s. Special books would come out and everyone would flock to get their hands on them, often buying multiple copies because they were going to be valuable someday. Of course, the fact that the market was so flooded with them caused an opposite effect and today you can’t get more than cover price for many of those books.

  51. Gambit8370 Says:

To the greedy comic book store owner in the Chicago suburbs who kept all copies behind the counter and was selling them for $35 each only an hour and a half after the store opened: I hope that your short term gain was worth it to you. I have been shopping at your store for YEARS helping you make your hefty rent payment every month in a struggling economy. The fact that you wouldn’t sell a copy of that book to me at its already inflated cover price of $3.99 was absolutely apalling to me. You can keep your crap comic and your bad attitude. Your insatiable greed and lack of understanding of the concept of customer loyalty has cost you a heavy price: my continued patronage. I will celebrate the day when you go out of business you greedy bastich. And Marvel, shame on you for creating this supply/demand problem in the first place. You should consider your loyal customers as priority when concocting a racketeering scheme like this. You won’t make it through this recession unscathed, mark my words.

  52. DTron Says:

Here in Hawaii where Barack Obama was born and raised, I went to 3 comic stores to try to get the variant cover. I called 1 store a few days ahead of time and the store owner said that he doesn’t know when it will sell out of his store but he is not taking reserves for the Obama comic. So I thought that everyone has a fair chance at getting an Obama cover since he is not taking any reserves on it. When I went to his store when he OPENED, he lied to me and said that he sold out of all of his Barack Obama variant cover comics and that he only has the regular cover. He basically lied to me when I called ahead of time. I KNOW that the store owner is holding the variant Obama covers and is selling them elsewhere for a premium because I remember he tried to sell the WildC.A.T.s premium covers for $40 each the week that they came out. The problem is that the Obama variant is not a premium comic–comic shops could order as much as they want as long as they order more copies of the regular edition than ASM 575.
I went to the other store and they also had sold out of the Obama covers AND also the regular editions. They also said that they were only taking orders for the second printing. How could you sell out of ALL of the covers including the regular editions BEFORE they opened. That’s BS. They’re just holding onto them and selling them for a premium on eBay even though they bought all of their ASM 583 comics at a heavy discount. By the way, the 2 stores are ‘Collector Maniacs’ and ‘Gecko Books’. Both comic shop owners are liars and full of sh!t.

  53. DTron Says:

By the way, there were no lines of people standing in line to get an ASM 583 comic. You would think that due to the long lines across the nation and also the fact that Hawaii is Obama’s home state where he came from that there would be droves of people lining up for the comic. There was none. Only a handful of people that numbered to below 6 in both stores combined (Collector Maniacs and Gecko Books). This is probably due to the local people knowing how these 2 comic shops are and how they are run. Collector Maniacs and Gecko Books have a history of hiding new comics that are perceived as ‘hot’ and selling them for a premium instead of selling them for cover price. Perhaps this is the reason that many people shied away from buying comics from them altogether.

Almost every single time I went to ‘Gecko Books’ for comics I seem to be the ONLY customer in there and I’m not exaggerating. Why did so many people ditch these stores? Poor Customer Service. The people know better than to deal with cynical comic shop owners. I was a little late in finding that out.

  54. Matt Strawbridge Says:

My shop was ‘sposed to get 3 and didn’t get any.

Yay for the Spider-Man fan loyal customer who didn’t get something that even during flagging sales they’ve continued to buy.

  55. DTron Says:

The 3rd store is called ‘Jelly’s’ and they had a computer print out advertising the Obama cover. Then they only put out the regular cover instead of the Obama cover and then they said that that is the only cover that they had. It was just frustrating how many comic shops resorted to lying, false advertising, and resorting to cynical tactics just to gain a buck. This happened all in Hawaii folks.

  56. ViprerOneTwo Says:

    Sell Out, indeed.

  57. gmuney Says:

A store in mississauga was scamming people by telling us he had the ASM 583 Obama variant cover First printing and was selling it for $50.00 bucks plus tax, when you get there he pulls out the regular cover with Peter Parker and the girls on the cover and says here it is that will be $50 bucks, when I pulled him aside to tell him that your not fooling anyone here that’s the regular cover which is available everywhere for cover price, he told me that I was wrong and I should look into it, I then told him I did and that’s why I can tell him what the cover looks like what the cut off date was to qualify for it was and what the 2nd print looks like, he shut up quickly, and said I understand if you don’t want it, I said that’s not the point you are telling people that this is the Obama variant cover first printing and it’s not, Its called the Obama Variant cover because Obama is on the cover which you can see he is not on this cover, he blurts out well this is the only cover I got, I said good for you, but don’t tell people that its something that its not, you can expect people coming back for their money or you will be seeing a number of civil lawsuits coming your way, I said good luck and walked out.

  58. cindy chan Says:

You know the same thing happened to me in another store in Mississauga as well, he told me he had no copies and wanted my phone # to put on a list if it did come in, duh, if you don’t have it today then your not getting it period!

  59. GOOF Says:

My copy of Amazing Spider-Man #583 (the variant cover)just sold on Ebay for $42.75! I’d like to thank Mr.Obama for putting some extra cash in my wallet. Keep up the good work Barrack, the country’s economy will be turned around in no time. Now if I can only get that kind of scratch for Final Crisis #6 where Batman dies. Here’s hoping!

  60. GOOF Says:

I took my $42.75, bought a Palin 2012 T-shirt and went to Arby’s(without coupons)! Now that’s livin’ large my friends!

  61. JACK BAUER Says:

maybe the prez will be a rotating guest. it seems to be working so well for the creative teams that churn out the spidey-hash thrice-monthly.

  62. GOOF Says:

Final Crisis 6 (J.G. Jones cover) fetched me 7 bucks on Ebay. 7 bucks will cover my library fees but it won’t cover the rent! I just hope the Daily Bugle will buy my photos of Spidey and Barrack Obama and I have to remember to pick up Aunt May’s medicine. Oh no! My Spider Sense is tingling. No wait… it’s just my cell phone, it’s set on vibrate!

  63. Gary Says:

Does anyone else think the “story” here isn’t the Obama appearance in Amazing Spider-Man, but rather the absolute greed by Marvel for upping this to $3.99 and store owners for selling the Obama cover variant for $25 — $50 — $100??? They should be ashamed of themselves for doing this in THIS economy. Bastards.

  64. derrick E Says:

Hey, that jack-ass at squareone did the same thing to me he tried to sell me the regular cover of ASM 583 as the Obama variant cover for $125.00. I yelled Obama’s not even on the cover, it ain’t the cover! This isn’t right, how can someone do this, especially to people who are only buying the book for their kids or grandkids, what can be done about this?

  65. PhoenixPhan Says:

I find it funny that it’s ok for customers to sell their copies on eBay for crazy prices, but retailers can’t in their own store. Either everybody’s a jackass, or no one is folks.

  66. derrick E Says:

PhoenixPhan the price is not the issue, everyone please sell it for what ever price you want, but at least be honest and don’t say it’s something that its not! I’ll buy the regular cover or the variant cover at the going rate as long as its the cover its supposed to be, but when someone tries to cheat you by saying its the variant cover and its not that’s just wrong! I hope you understand the situation, not price, bait & switch, false advertising, and he knew what he was doing because for who ever bought it and did not come back to return it, he made his money and more on one single copy sold, sneaky guy, be careful is all I’m saying, buyer beware!

  67. GOOF Says:

I heard that when Kevin Smith needs gas money he signs a few copies of Green Arrow and puts them on Ebay. Same with Emmitt Smith. He wonders down to Walmart in Dallas, buys a couple footballs, signs them and auctions them off. Ain’t America great? Plus, I think they’re related! Those crazy Smith boys.

  68. GOOF Says:

All kidding aside, my college roomate called and wanted to know if I wanted to call off work and “take a bunch of ASM 583′s down to DC on Tuesday, to sell at $20 a pop, in a van down by the mall.” I told him, “Good luck Chuckles. I hope the secret service is nice to you.”

  69. PhoenixPhan Says:

I get your scenario derrick E, but you’re not the only one complaining. I’m just kinda saying my statement in the general sense.

    Greetings and Salutations!

It’s funny how everyone is going crazy about Barack Obama appearing in comics. First he’s in the his own comic (along with McCain) then he’s in Savage Dragon, then Spiderman, then Youngblood and Eric Larsen is complaining about how Marvel ripped him off by having Obama in Spiderman after Dragon had him in his. I think it’s all pretty funny and I’m not sure what the fuss is all about because to me its just old news. If you live in St. Louis and/or happened to have attended the Wizard World Chicago Con this past summer , then you might know the real deal: they’re all wrong about President Elect Obama’s first comic appearance.

I just wanted to drop you a line informing you that I had the first official unofficial comic about Obama called Barack Obama: Agent of C.H.A.N.G.E. It was a 5 page mini comic that served as the flip side to my Parade of Freaks Wizard World Chicago Special that came out at the end of May. The illustration first appeared in the St. Louis Arts and Entertainment website Playbacks:STL in January: http://www.playbackstl.com/content/view/7162/269/ (obviously someone loves him some Steranko). Then the actual comic appeared on my website Parade of Freaks. You can see it here for free: http://www.paradeoffreaks.com/2008/06/02/agent-of-change-page-1/ or buy it from Indy Planet for $1.99 at http://www.indyplanet.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1089 .

I know this may seem like some shameless promotion by a no name, wannabe comic creator (and it is) but also it’s about giving a nod to the Indie world for once again setting the trend that the mainstream follows and claims as their own. And actually I’m not a complete no name because I’ve had stuff published in national magazines before (Two Drink Minimum and Playback:STL who then both went under although Playback went web only) as well as being a December 2007 Contestant on Zuda Comics.

So anyways, I guess now you know.

    Cheers,

Overhyped comic for the most overhyped and unexperienced politician in history!!!

  72. GOOF Says:

Hey thanks to Obama I was able to buy a Palin T-shirt. Isn’t it ironic, don’t ya think?

  73. GOOF Says:

I need to tell you what happen to my buddy Chuckles, who went to DC to sell Obama crap. The secret service seized his van, fined him for not having a vending permit, drove him to the DC city limits and dumped him on the side of the road. They told him if he wanted his stuff back, including his vehicle, he would have to petition the government. Some nice people from West Virginia drove him back to his hotel, where he had to call his wife to come get him. She was pissed. Live and learn.
