Tell Me What To Read

January 5th, 2009
Author Sarah Jaffe

I’ve been trapped in South Carolina, so haven’t even gotten my comics from last week yet. Can you believe it? Really. I’m sad, too–it was Scalped week! And the new Vinyl Underground trade! But they’ll be waiting for me when I get back to Philly and convenient comic-shopping.

There’s plenty of goodness this week, too, so I’d appreciate some advice on what I should snag.

Unless Midtown is lying to me, it appears to be Anna Mercury and No Hero week. I’m also getting Hellboy: the Wild Hunt #2, the result of my first Tell Me What To Read post. I’ve got The Boys, too.  I’m tempted by the prospect of a new American Splendor GN, but am not completely sure.

So, my dear readers, as usual, what’s coming out this week that you’re excited about and think I should be too?

I recommend Haunted Tank and House of Mystery, with highest recommendations to Sandman: Dreamhunters and the first issue of the new Blue Monday series.

I’d like to second that vote for the new Blue Monday series, and also recommend you check out The VCs graphic novel, which I don’t see at Midtown but it is on the Diamond list (http://www.diamondcomics.com/shipping/newreleases.txt) – it features some of Cam Kennedy’s earliest pro artwork, along with art by Mike McMahon and Garry Leach, and it’s a heck of a fun story!

    New Blue Monday, of course.

I’d recommend picking up the 2nd printing of X-Men Noir #1 and a copy of X-Men Noir #2 for good measure. Fred Van Lente is at the top of his game with this series, and if you’re a mutant hater, don’t let the X-Men name put you off. This series is a straight period crime noir piece with some easter eggs for X-Men fans (Bobby Drake is a diamon thief, remy LeBeau owns a casino, Erik Magnus is a corrupt police chief and his son Peter is a college track star,) but perfectly enjoyable either way. Dannis Calero’s artwork is a great match for the series as well, making some use of photo reference, but never enough to be distracting, rather to enhance the moody feel of the comic. And as a bonus you get text pieces showcasing Bolivar Trask’s speculative fiction about the Sentinel, Nimrod reimagined as a pulp sci-fi hero.

If you’re a fan of Brubaker’s work on Criminal or the writing of Hammett or Chandler, you owe it to yourself to check this series out.

Marvel Zombies 3….I like the Nextwave version of Machine Man and his snarkiness continues here

Boys…..I am curious about this G-Men brunch and the Hughie romance is supposed to continue

and I agree Dave..X-Men Noir 1 was surprisingly good…I think I have underestimated Mr Van Lente.

The Sword. Luna bros all the way.

I second the X-Men Noir vote. Very cool. AND Incognito.
