This is the right webpage for anybody who hopes
to understand this topic. You understand a whole lot its almost hard to
argue with you (not that I personally would want to…HaHa).
You definitely put a fresh spin on a subject which has been written about for years.
Excellent stuff, just great!

If there is then you have not been as active and involved in your child's life and decisions as you should've or could've been. Keep a positive attitude as you develop a parenting plan to make it effective and useful. Dr Phil in his effective parenting survey of 17,000 people found that the two top challenges facing parents were making punishment work and improving school performance.

Definitely believe that that you said. Your favorite reason seemed to be on the web the simplest thing to take into accout of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed at the same time as other folks consider concerns that they plainly do not recognise about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the whole thing with no need side effect , people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thank you

Regarding the first two books, I agree with you entirely. However, as I read the third one, I remember becoming more and more annoyed by what I saw as an abusive relationship being idolized. I think that it is wonderful to have a book that focuses on female sexual and romantic desire, but when this same book idolizes a young girl who has become entirely dependent upon a man in every way and her entire life revolves around him, I take offense. However, I tend to think that the majority of disdain of the Twilight series is more our society's revulsion of focusing on women's fantasies, rather than disagreement with the sexist undertones.

"I’m sitting here writing this instead of finishing Eclipse because I don’t want to finish all the books before I have a twelve-hour drive with no audiobook to keep me interested."

"What’s really starting to get on my nerves, though, is the constant refrain of “I haven’t read the books, but here’s my take on them.” I’m a critic by trade, a rather overeducated one, and so I’ll stand by anyone’s right to read and critique a text. If you read the Twilight books and hated ‘em, great. However, when you haven’t read the text, I think at some point you lose your right to be snotty about it"

Please, follow your own advice! You had no right to publish an article on Twilight, whether for or against the series, before finishing all of the novels. In regards to your views on feminism: as poster Lisa Fortuner pointed out above, it's the nature of the relationship that is disconcerting in these novels.

On another note, I suppose you could call me feminist: I advocate womens rights and equality. However, I don't think that my feminist views have any effect on my take on Twilight. The novels were poorly written and even for a fictional novel, unrealistic. That might sounds contradicting, but it makes sense in the long run. There are facets of the novels which are simply ridiculous and bring the quality of the story down for me. Keyword: for me. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so why don't we just leave it at that?

@Salsa: You said the following:

"This is a love story about the perfect man. He’s every woman’s dream man, plain and simple. It appeals to all ages because of it’s “prince charming” story. It’s not just about “teens in love”. It transcends that and is a story about all consuming love. Yes, it’s written for women by a woman, however, if more men read this book they would gain some true insight to what a woman really wants…a man who is totally and completely devoted to them. I have read all four books twice and plan to read them again, several times. They are well written and entertaining and I thought the movie was okay, too."

As a victim of abuse, your words almost made me throw up. Reading "Twilight" (and yes, I have) makes me want to throw up. My problem with it is not that it's romantic, girly, emotional, and sensitive. On the contrary-- I LIKE romantic stories! I'm a sucker for them. But "Twilight" glorifies an abusive relationship to teenage girls, to CHILDREN... and I cannot in good conscience support that.

So I'm sorry if you like the books because they're about "every woman's dream man," but EDWARD CULLEN IS NOT MY DREAM MAN. He is a textbook abuser, and it sickens me that someone would actually refer to him as a prince charming and the ridiculous generalization as "every woman's dream man." Saying that to women who have been abused by men JUST LIKE EDWARD CULLEN is disrespectful and offensive.

Sorry. I get very worked up about this.

@Salsa: You said the following:

“This is a love story about the perfect man. They are well written and entertaining and I thought the movie was okay, too.”

As a victim of abuse, your words almost made me throw up. Reading “Twilight” (and yes, I have) makes me want to throw up. My problem with it is not that it’s romantic, girly, emotional, and sensitive. On the contrary– I LIKE romantic stories! I’m a sucker for them. But “Twilight” glorifies an abusive relationship to teenage girls, to CHILDREN… and I cannot in good conscience support that.

So I’m sorry if you like the books because they’re about “every woman’s dream man,” but EDWARD CULLEN IS NOT MY DREAM MAN. He is a textbook abuser, and it sickens me that someone would actually refer to him as a prince charming and the ridiculous generalization as “every woman’s dream man.” Saying that to women who have been abused by men JUST LIKE EDWARD CULLEN is disrespectful and offensive.

Look, no one's saying that you're stupid if you've read the Twilight Saga in its entirety and liked it- just that you have bad taste in things. And that you're kind of stupid.

“I haven’t read the books, but here’s my take on take on them."

You hadn't even finished Eclipse yet, but you wrote this article... Well, I have read them all, and while I can admit that they are compelling, that they have an extraordinary appeal to women, these factors make this book all the more dangerous! We all know how poorly the book was written, that all of the characters are essentially Mary-Sues and Gary-Stus, so I won't even touch on that.

Obviously you didn't notice the abusive behavior that Edward displays throughout the entire series (seeing as you hadn't finished it). He's a controlling, manipulative, creepy, stalker boyfriend! And yet he's viewed by so many young women as "the perfect boyfriend". Bella even admits to being scared of him when she wants to go visit Jacob but he won't let her. Protective? No, he breaks her effing truck so she won't do it!

The gender stereotypes that are reinforced throughout the series are nauseating. Is there a single woman character who doesn't fit into the typical female role? Girls, even when you're a kickass vampire, your job is to be the sweet, beautiful, housewife. The protagonist is a weak, simpering teenage girl who turns into a zombie without her man. Twilight teaches young girls that these things are normal!

I'm not saying that you're stupid if you like Twilight. I'm just saying that you should accept that it's not good for our young women. That book should come with a warning label. And maybe you should regard it as a guilty pleasure.

I've been defending Twilight for a while. The books are far from perfect, but I enjoyed them too. I'll forgive some of the alarming things to spend a few thousand pages with a smart, sarcastic protagonist whose on a quest for good sex and superpowers. I finally got around to writing down my rant (http://overbear.wordpress.com/2010/01/05/unapologetic-twilight-love-ok-maybe-a-little-apologetic/), and I found your blog while looking around in the wilds of the interwebs for some support. Awesome review. Amen, sister.

So, I wanted to find out what all the fuss was about, so I read these horrible books. So, OK -- they are not anywhere nearly great -- I have now read all the books in this series and throughout the entire series, I kept thinking there was something terriby wrong -- even sick -- about them. And I knew it had nothing to do with blood and vampires and werewolves. Then I got to the last book and realized: I'M SICK TO DEATH OF BELLA! It's ALL ABOUT Bella! Poor Bella -- she fell down and scraped her knee. At first the author wants us to believe that she's an independent young woman who's a bit on the social fringe and bookish -- on her way to Dartmouth and genuine independence. Then she turns her into something else entirely... the ultimate BRIDEZILLA-IN-THE-MAKING! A young woman who lives for nothing but to be worshiped.

It's four full books of: Everyone worries about Bella AD NAUSEUM. Everyone LOVES Bella. She lives in a constant state of drama and danger. Everyone wants Bella. Hunky guys fight over Bella. (And of course, her parents worry about her constantly.) When she finally marries and has a monster baby, I'M SICK to DEATH of her! I couldn't even finish the last book because I could care LESS. Definitely the most narcissitic heroine in all of English literature. If you want to call it literature ... which it definitely is NOT!!

A sad commentary on an entire generation of unrealistically self-absorbed young women who live to be worshiped.

I feel that both some of the 'lovers' (or at least, Poppy Bourne, seen above) and some of the feminist critquers, have valid points, though I would caution against EVER assuming that a very young person can automatically comprehend things on the level an adult can... sure, the forty-somethings who read this book can understand the "it's fucked up, but they're happy together" aspect, but not every 12-year-old girl will necessarily comprehend just how "fantasy" this series really is in terms of relationships. Remember High School Musical, with that blatantly selfish, narcissistic bitch, Sharpay? I'm in the midst of reading a book called "The Narcissism Epidemic" (very interesting, highly recommend it), and it mentions a very young girl actually NOT assuming Sharpay was a bad person "because she's pretty". Hmm. Ring any bells? That's often the way slightly older girls (teens) react to "bad boys" IN REAL LIFE, so, yeah. Careful what you *assume* about what young girls really think, as they haven't had nearly as much time to mature and grow to understand relationships as the over-25 set has.

Any case, speaking as someone who TRIED to read the books, here's my, according to this reviewer, perfectly legitimate critique:

It sucked.

It's also proof of why First Person is a very, very difficult thing to pull off well. I was told that even though a lot of the book would end up "gushing about Edward" in a less than perfect narrative voice, it was still emotionally compelling, really drawing you in to the girl's head and emotions, you know? And before you accuse me of not giving it a fair shake or having weird expectations, much of my expectations were actually built off having read her OTHER book, "The Host", (which has plot holes the size of Antarctica, and arguably a few deus ex machinas and Mary Sues, but nonetheless is a real nail-biter; I finished it in two days flat and hated so much as having to put it down for five minutes until I had finished it) and off reading a small snippet of "Midnight Sun" (the first book from Edward's perspective, which is far more interesting).

But... sorry to say, Bella's narrative voice IS HORRIBLE! She's one of THE worst narrators I've ever tried to suffer through. I made it not even a full 19 pages before I wanted to throw the book across the room, as she spends the ENTIRETY of those pages basically being a passive-aggressive whiner. Waaaah the weather's too wet! Waaaah I get a free car but it's not going to be new (and then it turns out she likes it anyway, because it's from the '50s and therefore "cute". *headdesk*)! Waaah I'm the Sheriff's daughter and my dad is ridiculously easygoing and permissive and generous! Waaaah I'll have to be the new girl at school! Waaaah everything is TOO GREEN (yes, she seriously complains that the environment in Forks is "too green"!). The kicker was when she decides not to turn down the old but FREE DID I MENTION FREE car, with:

"Never look a free truck in the mouth - or engine."

I'm sorry... I can take either terribly, terribly awkward OR whiny as hell prose. But not both at the same time.

Bella Swan gets described here as "selfless". But from the descriptions, the "selfless" acts were mostly just for close friends, family, or her boyfriend... and I find it hard to reconcile the implication that it would extend *beyond* this circle much with the fact for the first 19 pages she's a self-imporant, passive-aggressive, whiny, entitled BITCH who needs to seriously get the fuck over herself.

I liked "The Host" enough that I could recommend it as a library read for most people who like a good thriller so long as they can't care if they plot makes sense. And "Midnight Sun" had promise from a "psychologically interesting" standpoint.

But the actual, regular Twilight books from Bella's POV?

No, sorry, PASS.
