Yahoo.com just released a list of its 10 most popular superheroes of the year. The rankings are based on the number of hits through their search engine. You can probably guess most of the names on the list:
1. Batman
2. Iron Man
3. Spider-Man
4. Hulk
5. Superman
6. X-Men
7. Hellboy
8. Wolverine
9. Wonder Woman
10. Ghost Rider
If anyone has any credible theories as to why Ghost Rider made the list, I’d love to hear them. That just seems like a totally random name.

Every one of these, save Wonder Woman, has had a feature movie made about them in the last 4 years. And WW has an animated movie coming up.
It’s not about the comics, it’s about the comics movies.

I’d assume GH is on there as leftover interest from the movie, even though it seems strange that interest would have lasted this long. I wonder what the drop-off between #9 and #10 is as far as searches go?
I think the bigger point is that Ghost Rider, whose movie came out in 2007, beat out the Punisher, which goes to show just how little the world wanted another Punisher movie.

Ghost Rider had that horrible Nicholas Cage movie, perhaps its a top ten list of movies people want to pirate. The only one that doesn’t make sense is Wonder Woman, from that perspective. Unless its a search for Wonder and Woman in the same search query, without actually being about Wonder Woman.

Really? Ghost Rider is on the list because there was a recent movie about him. In fact, all of these characters either have movies out recently, or movies in the work. Not that hard to figure out…

Standard list. Ghost Rider is one of those heroes like Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Atom, Aquaman, etc that just gets much love from hardcore fans at certain times. Right now, GR’s book is hot with a mega hot writer so I’m not surprised he’s on the list.

Well, geez, dude, Ghost Rider had a movie made about him, which did very well on DVD (and continues to do so, I’d imagine), so naturally people will be curious about him.

Ghost Rider was probably left over from the 2007 movie – it came out on cable TV over here this year, so maybe the casual viewers were checking it out? Either that or a Henry Rollins resurgence.

Nick Cage is just a helluva lot more popular than any of us would like to believe.
I’d have thought a lot of curious trailer viewers might be looking Watchmen though.

I’d have to agree with deathpool and mr.dazzler here. jason aaron is a kickass writer and the art’s astounding too. the movie certainly wasn’t too bad. my father’s an old school comics fan (of, you guessed it, silver surfer, dr. strange, daredevil and ghost rider) so he eats these movies up. i’m guessing there are more than a few baby boomers like him out there.

Yeah, it’s the Ghost Rider movie that gives it that much buzz. If Nick Cage hadn’t played him, it wouldn’t have made the top 10.
