Tell Me What to Read

December 22nd, 2008
Author Sarah Jaffe

Last week I lied to you, dear readers. I thought my pull list was only one book long, but, well, Diamond’s site lied to me and when I got to the shop I got a nice surprise, as Doktor Sleepless and Air were also out. I must admit that I didn’t take anybody’s recommendations last week, as I was excited to have three books I wanted rather than one, and I’ve been tradewaiting Fables for a while (sorry, guys).

The Hellblazer Christmas special was good fun, though, with several different stories by different writer-artist combos adding up to an oversize issue. John Constantine’s been around for so long and been done by so many different writers and artists that it’s fun to see old faves come back as well as new people get a crack at him. My long-standing comic-crush…

I’m in South Carolina for the next two weeks visiting the fam, and don’t have access to my favorite local comic shop (Brave New Worlds at 45 N 2nd St, Philadelphia! No, they didn’t pay me to say that) so I might not get to pick up new books this Wednesday. I have to drive an hour and a half to get to the comic shop in Savannah. Yes, I will do it, but probably not on Christmas Eve, especially since none of my regular books come out this week.

Still, I’m always looking for your recommendations. I’m tempted by the Young Liars trade, so your opinions are especially welcomed on that book, but as always, feel free to pitch me anything you love, as long as you back it up.

Happy Holidays, everyone.

Atomic Robo: Dogs of War #5 is likely the best book to come out this week, but the last issue of a miniseries isn’t the best jumping on point. The first trade is totally worth getting, though. Other than that, lots of capes and tights for me this week, which doesn’t seem to be your thing.

Have you checked out an independent book called Love and Capes? It’s by Thom Zahler and it is one of my favorite books. The premise is that if you are a super hero and you decide you want to tell your girl friend you love her, don’t you have to tell her everything? As the tag line on the book says, “Abby knew that Mark was a good guy, she just didn’t realize how good.” It’s a very funny book where all the super hero action happens off screen/page. IDW just released the first 6 issues in a trade. The book has gotten several good reviews. The other issues are available from Thom’s site, http://loveandcapes.com. I love the book and anyone who’s picked it up based on my recommendation has loved it.

    I’m intrigued, Jesse…

I do like “Love and Capes” a bunch. The tone is basically “tender sitcom,” and it’s got a nice, animation-cel-ish look to it.

I’ve also been enjoying Patsy Walker: Hellcat a whole lot–a very peculiar, very lighthearted superhero book. Not quite comedy, just really playful and charming, and not like anything else around right now. Fourth issue’s out this week; take a look at the first one if it’s still hanging around your store of choice and see if it’s your speed.
