Comic Book Confessional

December 14th, 2008
Author Corey Henson

We’ve all got our dirty, little, comic book collecting secrets. They are the things that eat away at our souls and cause us to wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat from fear of being discovered. My friends, it’s time to come clean. Unburden yourselves of your secrets, for the first step in seeking absolution is to repent. Here are my dirty secrets, feel free to share yours in the comments section. Don’t worry, we’re all friends here, and we won’t judge you.*

-In 1991, I bought 10 copies each of X-Force #1 and X-Men #1. Five copies of X-Force to open the polybags and collect each of the trading cards, and five to keep in the bags for posterity. I stil don’t know why I thought I needed all those copies of X-Men, other than perhaps “speculator fever” combined with a fundamental ignorance of the law of supply and demand.

-I still kind of like Rob Liefeld’s New Mutants run.

-I’ve read a few of James Kochalka’s comics, and I just don’t get what the fuss is all about.

Fantastic Four movie

-I like the Ghost Rider and Daredevil movies, as well as Dolph Lundgren’s Punisher and Roger Corman’s Fantastic Four.

-I actually thought there was a chance DC would make Jean-Paul Valley the permanent Batman if the “Knightfall” storyline had proven to be popular enough. So yeah, the whole point of that storyline soared way over my head.

-I don’t really like Steve Ditko’s artwork.

*I’m totally lying. It is our God-given right as comic book fans with computers and internet access to judge you.

  1. dranj Says:

    Great topic:

    1) I own the first 12 issues of American Flagg in every form imaginable .. floppies, over-sized soft cover trades, over-sized hard cover ’signed and numbered’ trades, and recently released hardcover.

    2) I have never really found the XMen characters compelling, and I have only collected them monthly when Morrison wrote it.

    3) I just don’t like Gaiman’s Sandman, thinking all the hype was much ado about nothing. That said, I collected it for years because I thought maybe one day I would ‘get it’.

    4) I liked the concept of Armageddon 2001

  2. Cisco Kid Says:

-I thought the Electric Superman status quo was really cool at the time it happened.

-I have continued collected a series over 3 years after I stopped reading it because I am a completist and I worry the moment I stop it will get good again.

-Steel (John Henry Irons) is my absolute favorite character. To the point that I collected the entire turd 2008 Infinity Inc series.

Great idea for a topic. More self-shame as I think of it.

  3. Itchy Says:

    1. When Fabien Nicieza took over X-Force, I sincerely believed he was winding all the X-titles towards satisfying conclusions for their various ongoing stories. Even through X-cutioner’s Song, I thought they had the whole thing mapped out, ready for a slow reveal… It wasn’t until the Phalanx storyline and the return of Cipher that I knew it was all a lie.

    2. I got into comics because of the Spiderman issue featuring that idiotic “Spot” character, who was recently revived in Modok’s Eleven…

    3. My first Keith Giffen comic, a Daredevil issue featuring arsonists, scared me so much I asked my mother for permission to tear it up.

    4. Today, the only Marvel runs I would re-read are the West Coast Avengers, and Punisher when he blew up the building. And Earth X.

  4. Timo Says:

I want to like Roger Corman’s Fantastic Four.

Anybody know where I can get a legal copy?

  5. Simon DelMonte Says:

I don’t like Maus, or Art Spiegelman.

I don’t like Sandman or any Neil Gaiman comic but 1602 (though I respect him immensely).

I think The Golden Age is the best comic ever done with DC heroes, better than Dark Knight or Kingdom Come.

As much as I loved the Silver Age Superman as a kid, I loved the Byrne version more (especially once Roger Stern and Karl Kesel were involved).

I just can’t warm up to Wonder Woman or Thor.

I miss the old Firestorm and Captain Atom as he was in his series.

  6. Simon DelMonte Says:

dranj, there are stores from A-2001 that I remember with total fondness, like the President Superman tale and Waid’s first Flash comic.

  7. RogueSmurf6 Says:

I got into reading and buying my own comics in the 90s through the Clone Saga, which I still enjoy to this day. I absolutely love the Ben Reilley character, as well as both his Scarlet Spider and Spider-Man costumes.

  8. yonan32 Says:

I have all and immensely enjoyed the Maximum Carnage storyline when it came out

  9. Ed Says:

    This:
“-I still kind of like Rob Liefeld’s New Mutants run.”
    Plus this:
    “I don’t really like Steve Ditko’s artwork.”
Equals: I’m really going to have to treat your opinions with suspicion from now on. That speculator drone confession doesn’t help.

  10. Cole Moore Odell Says:

Contrary to the idiom, there should be a full accounting for taste, with substantial penalties for anyone who disagrees with me.

  11. Cole Moore Odell Says:

I’ve never read any Gilbert Hernandez, outside of a couple anthology pieces.

My favorite Neal Adams work is the Batman and Robin vs. the Mummy Hostess ad.

I too often let artists’ crazy political opinions influence my regard for their art (exception for Ditko.)

I like Bob Haney more than Alan Moore.

  12. Vaughan Johnson Says:

I’m with ya on New Mutants. That was some good stuff. Most likely because Louise Simonson was involved.

I wasn’t that impressed with Sandman either except for a couple of brilliant issues.

I’m not that impressed by Alex Ross.

  13. Lucas Siegel Says:

I’ve only read Watchmen once, and it took me about 7 months (in trade) because I frequently fell asleep while reading it.

Contrary to that, I’ve read the entire Age of Apocalypse saga over 10 times, often inside of two or three days.

  14. Michael Hoskin Says:

I bought New Mutants#100 & Ghost Rider#15 when they were new. A few months later, I bought the 2nd printings of each.

I have never even seen a copy of the Comics Journal.

I don’t like Dark Knight Returns.

The humour of DeMatteis & Giffen’s Justice League helped drive me from DC to Marvel at an impressionable age.

  15. Alexa Says:

Um. I’m not that impressed with Kirby. His layouts were great and he really knew how to do action, and sure he was innovative back in the day, but his people all look basically the same.

  16. Pedro Tejeda Says:

Kirby’s characters had similar faces but they were completely dissimilar in attitude and tone. His detail in all other aspects were fantastic, his emotions where impeccable and oh yes, HE DREW 22 PAGES IN 2 WEEKS, SOMETIMES 1.

If he were alive, had one book a week to do, was given Klaus Janson, and Dean White, we would murder each other every month. Every goddamn month.

I’ve never read any Sandman comics but I did finish and love Lucifer.

  17. Pat Says:

I think Stan Lee was a horrible writer. I have an enormous amount of respect for the man because of the incredible number of cool characters and concepts he came up with, but he couldn’t write dialogue to save his life. Kind of like George Lucas in that sense- a true visionary on the macro scale but really horrible when you let him dictate the details.

  18. Isaac Goodhart Says:

ive spent hundreds of dollars to complete the marvel legends trading card set (never bought a complete set from a con). i have at least doubles of everyone. i think i have 6 or 7 deadpools

i got into comics via clone saga also. i thought ben reilly’s costume was the coolest thing ever.

i don’t like y the last man or fables

i can’t read stan lee comics — or any silver age comics for that matter

i don’t think dark knight returns holds up at all. why does naked adult bruce wayne hug carrie kelly?

I have three of the original spider-man legends from toybiz. one to keep in the box and TWO to play with.

and uh ….. i um….i like GREG LAND. yea i said it!

  19. Steven Says:

I really liked the Scarlet Spider.

  20. plok Says:

Some of these are just so, so wrong.

  21. Josh Bishop Says:

1.) The only series of X-men I own is the Morrison run, which was brilliant.
2.) Joe Kubert is so overrated it makes me sick.
3.) Alan Moore may be a genius or what-not, but I still think he’s boring and a complete d!@%.

  22. Sketchpad Says:

    1) I can honestly say that I’m not impressed with Moore, Bendis or Millar as writers.
    2) I can’t stand Morrison as a creator.
    3) I think that if Rob Liefield had a good inker, he’d be a fun artist. I loved his Hawk & Dove
    4) I thought Doug Ramsey was pretty cool ;)
    5) I also liked Daredevil’s movie, as well as Elektra’s.
    6) I don’t understand what’s so interesting about the Ultimate Universe.
    7) I miss Byrne’s art on mainstream comics.
    8) I really miss the Ultraverse & the original New Universe
    9) I liked Secret Wars II
    10) I never cared for Spawn

  23. Matt D Says:

… when I was 13 or 14, I would go around message boards calling Bob Harras “Bob Harrass” because I thought he was responsible for cancelling all of my favorite comics.

… ALSO, I would reread his Avengers run in a heartbeat. I dig the concept of the Avengers being Vision, Herc, Black Knight, Sersi, and Crystal. that’s way ballsier than sticking Wolverine and Spider-Man on there.

  24. Gerry Says:

I have the complete run of the Superboy series based off the live action television show.

I liked Jeph Loeb’s Captain American run with that artist we all like to bash.

Daredevil is a good movie. You know it to be true.

  25. Cole Moore Odell Says:

I bit my tonuge over Kochalka, Ditko, Morrison, Kirby, etc, but Joe Kubert? Joe Kubert?

Josh, just take a look at either of the Sgt. Rock Showcase volumes then say that about Joe with a straight face. If anything, the man is woefully *underrated*.

  26. Paul Says:

    @ Sketchpad

    10) I never cared for Spawn

That´s like the only reasonable thing in you list! I’m trully shocked!

  27. Casey Says:

    1. I loved Ben Reilly in all his shapes and forms and was really sad when he turned to dust in Peter Parker: Spider-Man #75.
    2. I’ve never read Sandman. Nor even come close to attempting to.
    3. I truly love the 2004 Punisher movie.
    4. I liked Young Justice a WHOLE lot.
    5. I can’t stand Alan Davis’ art.
    6. I just don’t get the appeal of Wonder Woman from a male or female perspective.

  28. GOOF Says:

I bought the 1994 Solo marvel mini series thinking he was going to “the next big thing”. D’oh!

  29. Scott Christian Sava Says:

This is a great list! I love these confessions!

    1) After trying several times…Watchmen is STILL crap. Just unreadable.
    2) The MOVIE, though, looks fantastic.
    3) I don’t get why Kirby is “king”.
    4) Secret Wars is one of my favorite comic series ever.
    5) Bone is great. For the first third of the series. Then…Ghost Circles? WTF?
    6) I haven’t purchased a comic book in 10 years (I do buy graphic novels)

  30. Luke_Evans Says:

Okay, this is a sublime idea for a thread. I love the idea of us all getting together like a bunch of recovering addicts spilling our guts out about the heinous things we’ve done to get our ‘fix’… genius! It’s just what we need to rout out the ‘fanboys’ from the ‘Fanmen’…

C’mon who’s brave enough to be a man and admit to being imperfect!

    Here’s my contribution…

    1) I think both Alan Moore and Frank Miller are highly over-rated. As much as I think they are proficient storytellers I think they only seem good at playing in someone else’s sandbox (ditto for Grant Morrison and Marm Millar).

    2) Some of the superhero movies are more appealing to me than vast swathes of titles, even the one’s the movie is itself based on. This is even after a solid 14-15yrs of comic reading, since I was 9! (TDK being the main one, love the movie…am not reading or even going to attempt to grapple with Batcontinuity)(Note: I do not think Burton’s Batman movies were any good, the Schumacher movies were not as dis-similar as people think, and were really only an extension of the sh*teness of Burton’s ham-fisted film-making “talent”.)

    3) I hate all other comic book readers, apart from my friend Mark. I can’t stand meeting people who read comics for reasons related to some kind of pursuit of “outsider chic”. At my age, most people who read them irritate me.

    4) I actually kinda liked ‘Superman Returns’ enough for it to make me get a crush on Kate Bosworth.

    5) I think the X-titles were good when written by Clarement especially in the 90’s (and pre-2000), good again during Morrison’s run, and never again. Brubaker, Whedon, Ellis, and Fraction suck on these books!

    6) I was deeply in love with Psylocke from the X-Men up until the age of about 15.

    7) I miss the fact that pre-’No More Mutants’ it was possible to just invent a whole new arm of the franchise, whilst now it’s just about moving characters between books. I think this stunts creativity and results in Wolverine being everywhere to point where it defies logic that he would have enough free-time to even take a p*ss.

    8) I used to get given £10 per week (British money to all you who do not know) to spend on lunches at school. I would have spent £5 by the Tues on cheap £1 packets of unwanted back issues and would then get by by hustling small change from my friends for food.

    9) Since turning 16 I am quite successful with women at the same time as not needing to keep this hobby secret (This might seem a weird confession, but hey, I think this defies a stereotype!)

    10) I think the phrase ‘Graphic Novel(/s)’ is a tool of class oppression.

    Regards,

    Luke

  31. Lucas Siegel Says:

Oh yeah, a couple more things:

    1) Out of all my sketches from the last several years of conventions, my Cable sketch by Rob Liefeld is my absolute prized possession.

    2) I enjoyed the vast majority of Chuck Austen’s runs on Uncanny X-Men and X-Men. His Action Comics and JLA runs were the first non-Batman or Vertigo books I ever purchased from DC, and the reason I started reading more DC in the first place.

  32. Dave McFee Says:

I think Watchmen is vastly over-rated. While the way Moore played with the form is genius, the plot is a huge letdown. The Smartest Man in the World’s grand scheme is essentially a protection racket? Really?

I actually think Elektra is a good movie. Maybe not a good Elektra movie but still a good movie.

I think that both the Ben Reilly and black Spider-Man costumes are better than the classic one.

I just don’t get the appeal of the Punisher.

I think $4.00 for a monthly book is too much and it may cause me to quit buying comic in the “floppy” format.

  33. 80Pork Says:

    1) I’m a big Dazzler fan, and as a kid, I searched and searched cheap bins to get the whole series. A friend bought a copy of #38 (guest-starring the X-Men, and at that time, very hard to find) for me for Christmas to complete my collection.

    2) I had a letter printed in a comic one time only: What The?! #5

    3) Even though people bash comics from the 90s (especially Marvel), I love that decades Maverick, Quicksilver, Heroes For Hire, New Warriors, Silver Sable & The Wild Pack, Nomad, Wonder Man, Sleepwalker, and Darkhawk books.

    4) I prefer Julia Carpenter Spider-Woman over Jessica Drew Spider-Woman.

    5) I love Spider-Ham and keep hoping for an Essentials collection of his series as well as all of his Marvel Tales back-up stories.

    6) Never been a huge DC fan, but the first DC comics I remember reading were Captain Carrot & His Amazing Zoo Crew #3 and Funny Stuff #1 (a Christmas comic).

    7) I’m a sucker for buying older (early 90s and earlier) comics based on cartoons/tv shows/movies (basically books from when I was 13 and younger). I will easily buy a copy of Madballs, WCW, Silverhawks, or Wild West COW Boys of Moo Mesa over some standard superhero comics from the 4 major publishers. My reasoning is that I can easily find a copy of Amazing Spider-Man #285, but finding Madballs #5 is a little tougher.

  34. Luke_Evans Says:

    @ Lucas Siegel

Dude, that Chuck Austen confession really made me choke…

You are one brave person to admit to that one!!!

    :-p

  35. Ratbat Says:

    1. I would never have gotten into comics if not for the clone saga.

    2. No matter how well Geoff Johns writes Hal I will always prefer Kyle Rayner.

    3. I love Rom: Spaceknight.

    4. I am an unapologetic fan of the Ghost Rider movie.

    5. I was scared as crap of Onslaught. Like, really. I was hesitant to read comics he was in.

  36. kaijubotx Says:

1)I have watched the “Legends of the Superheroes” specials several times and still love them after 30 years even though they are absolutely horrible.
2)I think Frank Miller is overrated.
3)I will read anything by Kirby, especially the stuff he wrote in the 70’s. That’s some crazy $#!%.
4)I have no sympathy for Alan Moore bitching about how Hollywood destroys his stuff.
5)My favorite Spider-Man artist will always be Ross Andru.
6)Some of my favorite Marvel stuff of all time is drawn by Sal Buscema and Herb Trimpe.
7)I’m a completist when it comes to Marvel & DC superheroes in films, TV and cartoons and have everything on DVD. Yes, even Catwoman.
8)I have never read Gaiman’s Sandman.
9)I think the original Crisis is still the best crossover event ever. Second best? “Acts of Vengeance”. There. I said it.
10)I want the Adam West “Batman” show on DVD. Now.
    11)The X-Men bore me.
12)I have 2 longboxes full of every Image comic from their first 3 years of publication. I don’t know why.

  37. DigitalGonzo Says:

    1) I vastly prefer Cooke’s Spirit to Eisner’s, mostly because I can’t get over Ebony.

    2) I like Ronin far more than any other Miller work.

    3) I still enjoy Impulse more than any other speedster title before or after it.

    4) Even as a life-long Spider-man fan, I thought Brand New Day was fantastic and incredibly needed.

  38. Simon Says:

    - I think Geoff Johns is an overrated, not really talented writer and the fact that his name is on every second DC title really annoys me
    - I loved reading “Identity Crisis” but now I blame it for the general current course of the DC Universe
    - Don’t really care about Neil Gaiman
    - in my opinion Ang Lee’s HULK was quite okay
    - my first real encounter with Daredevil was the movie (my excuse: have been more into mainly DC back then)
    - there was a time, when the only comic I picked up on a monthly basis was Lobo
    - don’t really wanna see a Green Arrow or Wonder Woman or JLA live-action feature, because I’m worried I will hate it
    - I’ve read The Maxx many, many years after the MTV Cartoon, when I finally encountered it actually had been a comic book series before
    - Never really got into Spawn, although I tried out
    - In my opinion guys like Kevin Smith or JMS should just concentrate on their own babies (which are always awesome) and not work in Mainstream Comics (where they often screw up)
    - I really think the “Heavy Metal” franchise became a complete absurd/ridiculous/sad thing under Kevin Eastman, Eastman himself became kind of weird and the whole thing about how his wife Julie Strain is marketed as some kind of company mascot is absurd/ridiculous/sad too. Though, I have a strange, unexplainable affection to that stuff and I’m really kind of jealous he’s married to that Strain gal.

  39. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

I know it’s become trendy to rip on the “new” Blog@, and in most cases the comments have been snippy and unfounded, but this time I gotta chime in.

This isn’t an article. It’s a thread. It’d be more in place on the talk@ board.

The old Blog@ was more of a news feed than a blog really - little news items, reviews, etc. Not as many personal opinion columns, random natter and prattling, things that you’d usually see on a person’s blog. Many of the new Blog@ articles are in fact MORE like blogs really are, and I rather like that. Sometimes funny, sometimes informative, but all told they are more entertaining than the comments that follow them.

This piece is more of a premise that the writer asks the commenters to then make funny. Which, as I say, gets done to great success in the boards. And, IMHO, it’s where it better belongs.

  40. XANTHISS Says:

1-I read the Watchmen and hated it. I think the movie looks like a great take on the comic and I am sure Watchmen fans will LOVE it, but I wont go to see it.
2- I like Frank Miller’s work, always have, most of it. He tends to be like a movie actor, does the project that will keep him in the game, then does the project that he wants to do. I have no interest in THE SPIRIT so I wont be seeing that either.
3- I own the complete run of CRYSTAR.
4- I met Adam West and didn’t ask for his autograph.
5- I met Marc Singer and did ask for his autograph.
6- I bought MORTAL KOMBAT vs DC just so I could play BATMAN

  41. Luke_Evans Says:

    @ Vinnie Bartilucci

Dude, you didn’t say what your comic book confessions were…

If you want to bring up any other topic can you please use the forums, as that’s not the point of this article.

    Thanks.

  42. Jamal Igle Says:

I’ve fallen asleep during all three Lord of the rings movies, in the theater, at home… They bore the hell out of me.
I’ve never seen a single episdoe of 24, the X-Files (although I saw the first movie) Millenium. I’ve never seen E.T. all the way through, I just don’t have any interest.
As much as I like Ed Brubaker’s Captain America, I’m still angry they brought back Bucky Barnes. Then again I’m still pissed Jason Todd is back too.
I’ve stopped reading anything X-men related. I’ve had a love/hate relationship with the X-men for 30 years. I hated the series but loved stuff like”Children of the Atom” and Fall of the Mutants.
The worst decision Marvel made (amongst many) was giving Wolverine his memories back.

  43. Starz Says:

One of my favorite X-Men story arc’s is Chuck Austen’s “She Lies With Angels”

  44. Ben Says:

    I like Secret Wars II.

    Not LIKED. Like.

    ~ Ben

  45. David Says:

A few things people have said I echo - Kyle over Hal, Impulse is #1, Y: TLM is a snore, plus these:
#1) As much as I think Byrne is a jerk, a terrible artist and an awful writer, I still love his extremely underated run on Wonder Woman for the wild and crazy ride that it was.
#2) Most of the Marvelverse bores me.
#3) I think Christopher Priest is one of the best writers of the past 20 years.
#4) Even though I’m a DC-er of 30+ years, I hate the return to pre-Crisis road that DC has been going down since Didio took over. This is not just limisted to bringing back dead characters (Hal, Barry, Jason Todd, Kara, etc.).
#5) Astro City #1/2 and The New Teen Titans #38 are the only comics to ever make me cry.
#6) It still pisses me off to this day the way the fanboy community treated Devin Grayson.
#7) I sometimes want to stop reading and walk away from comics all together because of the self-importance and condescending arrogance some readers have about the medium (see #6).
#8) While I can appreciate them now, I hated the Legion’s 5 Year Gap and the Justice League so much (both Giffen titles) that they drove me away from comics entirely for almost 10 years.
#9) I thought the Matrix (Linda Danvers) Supergirl was 10x more creative and interesting than Kara Zor-El from any time period.
#10) I piss and moan that Ellis is a one-note hack yet he’s written three of my all time favorite books - The Authority, Planetary, and Fell.

  46. citizenzero Says:

Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns are both highly overrated works, in my eyes. not that either is BAD mind you, just vastly overrated.

Also, while I can see why we make fun of much of what was published in the ’90s, that IS the era that got me into comics and thus it holds a special place in my heart.

I’ve seen some things on this thread that have made made gasp in disbelief and others that have made me think ‘oh thank god someone else thinks this!’ i like this thread. we should all be able to admit these things free of ridicule, or at least anything beyond your general friendly ribbing.

  47. Frank Says:

    1) I hate (yes hate) Jack Kirby’s art - go ahead and shoot me!

    2) I didn’t get nor liked HC Graphic Novel Batman: Arkum Asylum.

    3) I don’t like Sandman by Neil Gaiman.

    4) I loved DC’s Invasion mini-series done, in part, by Todd McFarlane.

    5) I actually like Rob Liefield’s stuff…well some of it.

    6) Watchmen was good and all but no way to the level that people make it out to be.

    7) One of the best series I have ever read in the last 20 years or so has been Mike W. Barr’s and Brian Bollands “Camelot 3000″.

    8) I could never get into, nor do I today, any X-Men comic.

    9) Favorite Super-Hero movie? Batman: the one with Devito as Penguin and Pfeiffer as Catwoman.

    10) I miss DC’s Amazing Zoo Crew starring Captain Carrot.

  48. 80Pork Says:

    XANTHISS Says:
“I own the complete run of CRYSTAR.”

I’m in the same boat, dude. I thought that comic was pretty good.

  49. dkc_2001 Says:

    1. I miss the MICRONAUTS. At least Bug is running around.
    2. I still enjoy the 60’s Legion stories.
    3. I never got the fuss about WATCHMEN, or most Vertigo titles outside of Doom Patrol.
    4. I enjoyed the unreleased Captain America movie.
    5. Superman Returns SUCKED.
    6. ROM was da BOM(B)!
    7. I don’t read Marvel anymore after BND. It’s an insult to married people.

  50. Kevin T. Says:

    This topic it too funny!

    1) My mom bought me my first two comics; Atari Force #15 and Spanner’s Galaxy #3. Wish I still had them.

    2) I now collect comics as an alternative to my 401(k); As I just spent $1100 on Silver Age Spider-Man last night on eBay.

    3) I have a wicked eBay habit of buying Silver Age back issues to which I am worried about.

    4) I to, buy current issues to which I have not yet read (I have about a long box of issues to read still.

    5) I was a huge Valiant fan; so huge I collected EVERY FRICKIN’ TITLE that came out - the continuity of the universe was just too cool. Everything tied together.

    6) I ended up TOSSING my entire Valiant Collection in the dumpster after the comic crash of the mid 90’s.

    7) I love Alan Daivis’ artwork, I also despise Rob Liefelds work.

    8) I miss Todd McFarlane on Spider-Man (or ASM for that matter.)

    9) I never liked Kirby’s work very much in the beginning, but the more Silver/Golden Age stuff I pick up with his artwork the more it grows on me.

    10) Sergio Argones is the true comic master. along with Groo and Cheese Dip.

    Late,

    Kevin

  51. Tom Says:

    1) I love Winick’s Batman run and I love Jason Todd as well!
    2) I like Damien, too!
    3) I think that Frank Miller is greatly UNDERrated by fanboys, as is ASBARTBW
    4) I will occasionally buy books that I want to own but not read, such as Y: TLM

  52. Bry Says:

    1) Bart Allen is probably my all-time favourite DC character, but I only want to see him resurrected if it’s as Impulse. I think he’s been entirely misused since they made him become Kid Flash.

    2) Geoff Johns - from everything I hear, he’s a really nice guy and a good writer, but he’s almost single-handedly driven me away from DC Comics with countless nostalgia-driven events and storylines. Sorry, but Hal Jordan and Barry Allen are boring, and I feel the current direction DC’s taking has only made the company all the more dependent on a shrinking market of long-time readers instead of doing something fresh to draw new readers in.

    3) I still love Ben Reilly, and to this day believe he’s not “really” dead, somehow.

    4) I got into Spider-Man and became a huge fan only knowing him being married to Mary Jane, but I couldn’t care less if they remain married or not. I’ve avoided “Brand New Day” not because their marriage was undone, but because of how they essentially wrote MJ out of the book.

    5) Aunt May and Harry Osborn’s “death issues” in the ’90s were excellent stories and terrific send-offs for their characters, but I’m really glad they were both brought back to life.

    6) “X-Men in Space” has always been a stupid idea. Always.

    7) After Grant Morrison’s “New X-Men”, I find it hard to get into any version of the X-Men that has them wearing spandex costumes. But I’ve always felt Wolverine in yellow was a hideous design choice.

    8) The only superhero comic I still read is “Ultimate Spider-Man”, and even with that I’m pretty far behind. “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Hellboy” and “Usagi Yojimbo” are what keep me reading comics right now. Go Dark Horse!

  53. Dave Says:

    1. I like All-Star Batman and Robin.
    2. I liked it when he said, “I am the g*dd*mn Batman.”
    3. I have no idea why I am still reading Young Liars.
    4. Karen Berger is the greatest editor ever and doesn’t get enough credit.

  54. Adam Says:

1.) I love the Electric Superman stuff and wish that they would have kept his powers as such, and I enjoyed the Superman Blue/Red.

2.) Loved Jeph Loeb’s run on Captain America and was sad when James Robinson replaced him.

3.) I loved Bruce Jones’ run on Nightwing and wish it would have continued.

4.) While we’re on the same subject of Nightwing, I enjoyed Devin Grayson’s run on it too from when I started reading it. (which was during War Games)

5.) Greg Land is an awesome artist.

  55. Cisco Kid Says:

-I have considered Norman Osbourne “still dead” since his original death. I take it very seriously. As such, I have my own mental continuity where any story he has been in since resurrecting didn’t happen. No Ellis Thunderbolts, no clone saga. In light of this, with Marvel’s new Dark Reign direction, I dropped all Marvel books but Captain America last week.

  56. Uncle Happy Says:

I actually liked Rob Liefeld’s Awesome Comics line.

I hate Jeph Loeb with an immense passion for what he’s done to the Ultimate line.

I hate Warren Ellis’ Marvel Comics work. Really, he should never touch existing characters unless they’re his own.

  57. Costa Says:

    - I don’t get what was so awesome about Jack Kirby’s Fourth World. It seems just so…so stupid to me.

    - I totally tried to find myself a pair of Gambit-style gunslinger gloves once, when I was a teenager.

    - There are books out there that do the concepts that made Spider-Man great better than Spider-Man ever did.

    - I never liked Golden or Silver Age books. I grew up in the 90’s, I never saw the point in liking old comics with shitty writing and shitty art from decades before I was born.

  58. Stuart Says:

    - I’ve read the whole Invisibles series by Morisson several times and I still have NO IDEA what the hell it was about. It makes me feel stupid. And I helped save it on that Thanksgiving day…

    - As a teenager I was so ashamed of my love for superhero comics that I used to hide them behind my tee-shirt when I left the store. Now that I’m a librarian, I harass people until they agree to leave with The Ultimates or Hellboy. I like to think it improves my karma.

  59. CC Says:

I owned the complete run of NFL Superpro…and sold it for a profit!!!!

  60. Radomski Says:

I hate Greg Land with the passion of a million suns
I think Rob Liefeld gets alot of crap , but as bad as he may be to some, he’s a hero to others.
The suck list: Joe Mad, ruined Ultimates for me. Michael Turner, god rest his sole but was a horrible artist.Tim Slae… Just don’t get it. Jack Kirby, Same thing.Mac rayboy was 10 times the artist Kirby was.

  61. Daryll B Says:

well since we baring our souls here:

-I always have thought Grant Morrison was overrated and I never forgiven him for what he did to my X-Men

-The original New Warriors run is underrated by fans in terms of story and character development in my eyes along with the original Bats and the Outsiders, Harbinger and the current Checkmate.

-I loved the Valiant done issues of Deathmate and tolerate the Image parts.

-I too don’t understand the all out hate for Devin Grayson and Greg Land but the love for lesser artists and writers.

-Sorry, if a comic/graphic novel appears in EW or Rolling Stone must check out lists it a turn off for me.

-Count me in with the Ben Reilly, Kyle Rayner and Jason Rusch lovers but I really am getting turned off with ‘Golden Age Revivals’.

-I dislike Liefield now but I was a mark for his new mutants/x-force run.

-I miss the days of Heathcliff and Top Dog comics and wish they too were collected.

  62. FSfromHolland Says:

1: I own two times Sandman Mystery Theatre in single issues out of pure greed. Though still like Guy Davis’ artwork a lot!
    2. Frank Miller ‘ DK2 was in my opinion absolutely horrible. Sin City and 300 etc. Crap crap crap.
3: I own not only the first half but also the latter half of Valiant/Acclaim Comics. Out of investment opportunity for € 0.20 cts!
4: I sold a run of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for way too much money.
5: I think Hellboy is overrated since Emperor Worm and Mignola should be punished for betraying a wonderfull creation.
6: I thought Fantastic four movie one and two were not bad at all in their genre.
7: Is loving Sergio Aragones’ Groo and Paul Grist’s Jack Staff a sin?
8:Todd mcFarlanes artworks consists of drawing tricks strung together in a very bad way.
9: Since years I never read nor DC nor Marvel anymore….
10: Transmetropolitan an League of Extraordinary Gentrelemen 3 were the biggest letdowns in my comic loving live.

  63. Ortiz Says:

I love this confession thing. OK, *deep breath* here I come:

    1) I started reading Watchmen a couple of weeks ago, for the first time, I stopped in issue 4 and still don’t know if I’m gonna finish it, is quite boring.

    2) But I’m gonna see the movie.

    3) I started in comics in mid 90’s with Onslaught, and still think is one of the best crossovers I’ve ever read.

    4) Till 3 years ago I was a Spawn completist, ask me for any comic till that point and you can bet your comics collection that I have it.

    5) I liked the Ghost Rider movie.

    6) I read the whole Y: The Last Man and think it was a waste of time and money, not a bad comic, but not a master piece, just 3 or 4 issues are interesting.

    7) The Silver and Golden age comics are quite boring, I like, and own, just a handful of them.

    8) Never read a single issue of Sandman.

    9) Jeph Loeb destroyed the Ultimates but I enjoy a lot Hulk.

    10) The Age of Apocalypse event made me a total X-Men fan, I’ve re-read it several times.

    11) I’m a total Marvel whore, can’t help it.

    Peace

  64. TOM Says:

I always thought that Gwen Stacy should have lived—and eventally married Peter Parker.

Aunt May should have stayed dead TWO deaths ago.

Ben Reilly should have been the real Spidey

Superman should be allowed to date other woman. LOTS of other woman. He should not be a hick boy scout. Never was.

  65. HazMatt Says:

    01) 1990s Image team books are a guilty pleasure of mine, including the Extreme Sacrifice crossover.
    02) Greg Land references the same three images over and over again, and I couldn’t care less. The art still looks good.
    03) I couldn’t get through one issue of Fables.
    04) I LOVED the Alonso/Allred X-Force/X-Statix series.
    05) I LOVED Agent X.
    06) I LOVED Grant Morrison’s X-Men run.
    07) I think Crisis on Infinite Earths is the definitive Event mini-series.
    08) I think UNITY is the second.
    09) I have never been impressed with a regular Batman or Superman title outside of Geoff John’s “Up, Up and Away!”
    10) I submitted a proposal to Code 6. :/

  66. jane_jhereg Says:

i hate jean grey. i hate the pheonix. i hate the on-again/off-again love triangle with scott summers and logan. i hate “i love you logan but i can’t do this to scott because i love scott.” i hate “i died!” “i’m alive!” “i died again.” “what do you mean you got remarried because i died- didn’t you know i’d be reincarnated?”

STAY DEAD JEAN GREY for the love of my own personal sanity.

i pray that the little girl running around with cable is NOT jean grey. dammit.

i’m a marvel whore but i hate claremont.

i owned “Witches” - the 2004 Marvel mini series. occult meets cheesecake. i thought it was ok. seriously- i didnt hate it- i feel i probably should have. surely thats enough for a few hail mary’s and some our fathers.

i loved the Generation X tv series from 1996. yes. i know.

  67. MikeScottII Says:

I got into DC Comics strictly because I had giant homo-crush on Impulse.

I never had porn mags, I had issues of Impulse.
    *ahem*

  68. Joey capp Says:

‘m dropping Spider-man, Ms. Marvel, Astonishing X-Men, and Punisher MAX to make room for all 4 avengers books
I’ve never liked Jean Grey with the exception of the movies
I actually enjoyed Batman: War Games
Superman Prime is currently my 2nd favorite DC character
All Star Batman is my favorite
All Star Batman and Robin The Boy Wonder might be the greatest comic series I’ve ever read
I enjoy Frank Miller’s Daredevil more then Batman: Year One and Dark Knight Returns
I bought Dark Knight Returns almost 4 months ago and have only gotten through half of it
Chuck Austen’s X-Men run were the 1st X-books I ever read and I still kind of like it
As much as I love Booster Gold and Blue Beetle together I was relieved Johns didn’t keep Ted Kord alive
I actually had no idea Jason Todd was the Red Hood until he took off the helmet before he beat up the Joker
About a year ago I picked up some old Bat titles during Knightquest and I thoroughly enjoyed them
I was more upset about the death of Ralph Dibney then the death of any other comic character in the history of comics

  69. Blake Carter Says:

I can honestly say that I love Azrael Character, and thought his series was my fav. That being said I am child of the nineties and thought that the Knightquest Costume was amazing, and loved the death of superman, and yet, It took me 5 times to like Earth 2 by Morrison.

  70. ooggbboo Says:

–Lucas Siegel Says: “I enjoyed the vast majority of Chuck Austen’s runs on Uncanny X-Men and X-Men.”

Come tell him; he works evenings at the McDonald’s near my home.

    1. I will read anything with Conan in it
    2. More generally, I will read anything with a single, bad-ass hero facing impossible odds (i.e. the original Lone Wolf and Cub, Ennis’s MAX punisher); on the other hand, I despise comics featuring teams of god-people going on space opera adventures (i.e. JLA, the Authority, later Claremont’s X-Men where there were no limits on how powers could be applied: “Jubilee, make a bunch of firecrackers in his bloodstream to destroy the cancer cells!”)
    3. As a child, I used to run around on all fours and jump on furniture like Beast from X-Men
    4. I like Bendis, although I don’t want to; his dialogue is a portmanteau of “grating” and “gripping”
    5. I still can’t help but think that a character’s introduction/death/life-change is a major event, even though I know it will be retconned two years later
    6. I still go out of my way to watch Heroes, even though it’s like eating broken glass

  71. Russ Burlingame Says:

Alright, I keep thinking that I need to sit down and really think on this, but every time I see someone else’s comments I realize I just want to respond and get it over with. So I might have to come back around for seconds.

    1. I have a bizarre ability to look on the bright side and see “potential” in stories by creators I like, even when execution isn’t great. In this way, I allowed myself to become excited by the Electro-Superman arc and J.M. DeMatteis’ THE SPECTRE.
    2. It may be tacky to point it out, but I honestly believe that the quality of Jeph Loeb’s storytelling has gone down substantially since his son got sick. It’s not his FAULT, I don’t blame him and it’s totally understandable–but I’d encourage publishers to take note of this and stop promoting him as though THE LONG HALLOWEEN just came out.
    3. I’ve never completely warmed to HEROES, and still think that a TV version of RISING STARS would have been more or less the same thing, but smarter, better and (since it builds to an ending) something that won’t be a millstone around the network’s neck soon.
    4. I like having Hal back as the Green Lantern, but honestly didn’t like GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH or the first ten or so issues of the Geoff Johns GREEN LANTERN relaunch.
    5. I enjoyed SANDMAN, Alan Moore’s SWAMP THING and the America’s Best Comics line but don’t understand how they became “classics.”
    6. As a reporter, I’m disinclined to confront a creator, so I’ll let them talk even if I think they sound like an idiot. Yet, the only person who ever complained about the way I treated them in print was someone who I genuinely like as a person.
    7. I have no problem spending ridiculous amounts of money for Absolute Editions and the like, as long as the “bonus features” are there. This is also true for DVDs.
    8. I thought the V FOR VENDETTA and GHOST WORLD movies were better than their comic book counterparts.
    9. I LOVED the STEEL monthly series and never forgave Shaq for what I then perceived as his role in discrediting the franchise.
    10. As a guilty white liberal, I talk about the need for more diversity in comics. As a fan, it’s very difficult to get me to read a book about a character who doesn’t look like me. I feel vaguely guilty about this, but it doesn’t change how I spend my money.

  72. Peter Velez Says:

    @ Russ Burlingame
“10. As a guilty white liberal, I talk about the need for more diversity in comics. As a fan, it’s very difficult to get me to read a book about a character who doesn’t look like me. I feel vaguely guilty about this, but it doesn’t change how I spend my money.”

Man, I’m so glad that a white guy finally admitted that because I know you’re not the only one. I was SO glad in fact, it (along with all of the other posts in this thread) inspired to make my first ever post on Newsarama.
    Now on with the list:
    - I hate it when people say that John Rogers wrote the first 25 issues of Blue Beetle. He wrote 23 issues, two were fill-ins by other writers.
    - While on the subject of Blue Beetle, I think people who complained about the all Spanish issue were being racist.
    - Young Justice is my favorite comic series of all time and I would die for some Hardcovers.
    - I stopped buying Marvel Comics when they killed Captain America because I was so upset, despite the fact that I’ve never collected Captain America comic books and probably never will.
    - I hate Wolverine and will never forgive Jean Grey for cheating on Cyclops.
    - 50% of my love for Kyle Rayner comes from the fact that he is half-hispanic and I remind people of this every chance I get. (Like now for instance)
    - I could care less if Greg Land swipes for his artwork. Not that I particularly like his work, I could just care less.
    - I liked Miller’s The Dark Knight Strikes Back. The first half anyway.
    - I find something disturbing about the picture of fully grown Mister Mind in 52. I’m not sure what it is, but something just gives me the heeby-jeebies.
    - I liked Superman Returns and I thought Brandon Routh was an excellent Clark Kent and Superman. I also liked Daredevil.
    - My favorite scene in The Dark Knight, is when Rachel gets blown up because I hate that character with a passion.

  73. Bill_Hood Says:

    I like this topic…let’s see.

    1) I don’t get the fascination with all things Jack Kirby, he was groundbreaking at the time, sure…but, the art just doesn’t do anything for me.

    2) I, too, like Rob Liefeld…it’s not technically great art, but it is fun.

    3) There is a picture of me, standing in my kitchen with full green body paint, a shredded shirt and torn jeans putting on my best Hulk pose.

    4) I’ve spilled coffee in the lap of James O’Barr, the creator of “the Crow”

    5) I tore apart the “Death of Superman” storyline at a convention that year, in an elevator, WITH Dan Jurgens…I did not know it was him until later.

    6) I organized a funeral for Superman when he died, complete with processional down the aisle of the comic shop WITH a black casket that I painted the “S” Shield on. (It got news coverage)

    7) I think trade waiters are killing the monthly comics publishing.

    8) I don’t believe there is ANY reason that a story should last 6-8 issues, JUST to make a trade of it…if it can be told in 1-3 issues DO IT!

    9) I listen to Metallica and john Williams when i draw.

    10) I hope the weekly comic trend dies soon, 52 was good, countdown was poorly done and not needed, and Trinity is just a waste.

  74. fernald Says:

I loved DC’s Thriller comic from the 80’s. I have at least 3 sets of the series. I thought it was wonderful up to the point when Flemming and Von Eden left the book and it ran off the rails.
At one time DC had announced a Salvo Mini series that I was really looking forward to.

I feel Warren Ellis’ “Ruins” Is the best super-hero black comedy ever.

I want to see that sequel to the “Rawhide Kid” Max Mini, from a few years ago.

  75. Michael Mayket Says:

I wouldn’t have considered these dirty secrets until I read my way through this thread, but…

    1) I love Sandman and Neil Gaiman in general with the exception of 1602 which I find just kind of okay.
    2) I love The Invisibles and Grant Morrison in general with the exception of his current Batman run which I find just kind of okay.
    3) I love Watchman and Alan Moore without exception.

  76. Michael Mayket Says:

More on line with what I believe this thread was about:

    1) I got into comics via Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew and love them to this day.
    2) Nova Volume 1 #11 is probably my favorite comic book. I’ve read it so many times my original copy pretty much disintegrated in my hands.
    3) I too once loved McFarlane’s Spider-Man and Liefeld’s New Mutants.
    4) I think Nick Fury is one of the most ill-defined, schizophrenic, terrible characters in all of comics.
    5) Ditto for Namor.

  77. WesMantooth702 Says:

Ok, these first two are things I’m not ashamed of but are views that always get scoffed at in comic stores:

    1. I HATE Jeph Loeb’s work. Long Halloween and Dark Victory start strong and then fizzle. His Marvel “color” minis are just ok. His work in the Ultimate universe is horrific. Hulk has been one long boring c**ktease. His Wolverine run is the single worst run on any comic I’ve ever read.
    2. I think JMS is also overrated. “Spider totem”? Really? REALLY?

This stuff I’m absolutely embarrassed to admit, but out of the same self-loathing that all comics fans have (why else would we continue to buy all 52 issues of Countdown? Shouldn’t we have realized it was poop like halfway in?) I’m going to share with you:

    1. I have never read anything by Neil Gaiman except 1602 and Eternals (neither of which I liked very much).
    2. I have an addiction to buying comics on ebay and because of that I have a big wooden trunk full of roughly 600 comics I haven’t read.
    3. I have never read Crisis on infinite Earths or Secret Wars
    4. I own a full run of Wetworks and all Youngblood comics through the 2 Alan Moore issues
    5. I love Joe Maduriera’s art (but thought Ultimates 3 was ugly)
    6. I like Avengers Disassembled a lot
    7. I thought The Phalanx Covenant was the greatest crossover ever when it came out (and still kind of like it).
    8. I still love Eve of Destruction (the X-crossover right before Morrison took over)
    9. I do not understand The Invisibles no matter how much I want to.
    10. I think Knightfall is fantastic to this day.

  78. joeyz Says:

“- I never liked Golden or Silver Age books. I grew up in the 90’s, I never saw the point in liking old comics with shitty writing and shitty art from decades before I was born.”

Yes, when there was plenty of contemporary crap to go around.

I once read that Greg Land’s originals were copies of US weekly. After reading a trade of Ultimate FF, I realized, it’s all true!

I liked the Ghost Rider movie if only for the Knight’s of Prosperity guy sidekick’s toss-off death.

  79. Henry Says:

I own every 0 issue from the Zero Hour event.
