Is the Cat(woman) out of the bag for Batman 3?

December 13th, 2008

E! gossip columnist Ted Casablanca has reported an interesting bit of news about the proposed Batman 3.

While he says that the film is certainly “alive and kicking,” the real news according to Casablanca is that The Mummy‘s Rachel Weisz is currently rumored to be the frontrunner to play Catwoman in the third film.

While there is only speculative evidence that Christopher Nolan will return to outdo himself after the near billion-dollar success of The Dark Knight, Casablanca has added that Christian Bale will return to play a “sexier” Bruce Wayne.

Of course, one should take this with a grain of salt: while Aaron Eckhart erroneously gushed about the possibility of Angelina Jolie playing the part of Catwoman, Michael Caine claimed to MTV that Johnny Depp and Phillip Seymour Hoffman would appear as the Riddler and the Penguin.

Rachel Weisz is a great choice, she’s a great actress and would be a better choice than Angelina Jolie.

I call horse poo. On all of it.

  3. Nicky Says:

I think Rachel Weisz would be a excellent Catwoman. Certainly a step up from Angelina, who lets face it, way too overrated for her own good and is not much of an actress.

  4. Unit99 Says:

Although I think Catwoman (would be a great choice to bring back Bruce’s love life after Rachel) and the Riddler would be an excellent follow up to the Joker. Questioning who Batman is, or why is like he is…would be cool. I’m hoping Depp, Norton (YES the Hulk), or Daniel Day Lewis. However, I think three other villans might be good choices. First, a Chirstorpher Nolan BANE would be awsome! The other three villans that could work along with Catwoman is HUSH, Mad Hatter, and The Black Mask. BUT that said, I’m NOT BUYING into the rumor mil, unless it comes From Chris Nolan, His brother John, or David S. Groyer.

  5. Steve Danger Says:

She’s got a big bum and I like it.

  6. Daniel Says:

She would be a great Catwoman, and a cool romantic foil for Batman since Rachel is gone. I’d like them to keep the villains to a minimum, either 1 or 2 IMO.

  7. PinkLady Says:

OMG! This girl is beautiful and sexy. I bet she is just a step from Angeline Jolie. In a short time she will rise to fame, can bet on that definitely.

  8. Shaun Says:

A fine choice, but I’m not buying in to any of this… Just another unsubstantiated rumor, up there with Cher, Jolie, Depp and Hoffman. Until something’s officially announced, and nothing will be announced for awhile, it’s not even worth reporting. Nolan hasn’t even said if he’s coming back (though I have no doubt he will).

For the record, I’d still like to see Talia worked into the next movie.

  9. MMMMMM Says:

    How long ’till debunk?

  10. D. Peace Says:

I agree with Shaun. Although Jolie, Depp, Hoffman, and Weisz are all excellent actors, it’s all moot until Nolan himself is signed on and official announcements are made. It’s fun to dream but it’s just idle speculation at this point. Let’s just cross our fingers that Nolan does come back. That’s pretty crucial.

On another note, isn’t it nice that the days of Jim Carrey and Arnold Schwarzenegger are behind us? Christ on a crutch, that was awful.

  11. Ivan Says:

    “How long ’till debunk?”

Considering NO ONE from Nolan’s camp or Warners has said anything about this, I think this was bullshit since the day it was posted.

  12. Paul Says:

Rachel Weisz is perfect for the role.

  13. Ike Iszany Says:

How can there be casting rumors for a film that doesn’t have a director signed? Wouldn’t Nolan have some say in who the villians would be?

  14. Joshua 'Beard Guy' Shaw Says:

It’s way too early to start casting a movie without a script. Personally, I wouldn’t mind if there wasn’t a big name villain, considering the way The Dark Knight ended. Having Batman trying to fight day-to-crime and avoid the law could be interesting in and of itself. If they were to go with a big villain my vote is either the Ventriloquest/Scarface, Killer Croc (depending on how its done), or the resurrection of Ra’s Al Ghul. Please, no Catwoman or Riddler.
