Fan Outrage and Backlash in 3 . . . 2 . . .

Summit Entertainment, makers of Twilight, obviously knew that they had a good thing going.  Flush with success of the vampire romance, the company decided to rush production of New Moon, the second book in Stephenie Meyer’s series.  However, their rush has cost them a crucial team member: director Catherine Hardwicke.  As Variety reports, Hardwicke wanted more time to prepare the sequel, which has a script that still needs work and demanding production elements (considering the large presence of werewolves in the story).  In fact, Summit wants this movie out by the end of 2009 if it can manage it.  I can understand wanting to strike while the iron is hot, but they might want to weigh their options carefully.  They’ve built up enormous fan goodwill; the last thing they should do now is bleed that dry.

No offense to the Twilight fans here (what is there, 2 or 3?), but Uwe Boll could have directed this and it would have still made $70 million the first weekend. The teenage girls that flocked to this movie probably still don’t know or care who directed this. As long as they keep the cast, it’ll be Hardwicke’s loss.

Seriously, how do you sign on to a movie based off a popular book series and not be ready for the future? They should have expected (or at least hoped for) a Potter-like filming schedule.

I think they have to strike while the iron is hot, lest their target audience grow out of this phase and move on to better things. The demographic (13-15 year old girls) won’t know or care about a director change, so long as whats-her-face-with-the-raspy-voice and dude-with-bad-haircut are in it. Just my 2 cents, maybe I’m wrong.
