NY Times <3s Alison Bechdel

December 6th, 2008
Author Corey Henson

The New York Times spotlighted “Fun Home” and “Dykes To Watch Out For” creator Alison Bechdel in the Books of Their Times portion of Wednesday’s The Arts section. (You might need to register for the website to see the link. Even if you don’t, you ought to anyway. Reading is fundamental, after all.) I’m ashamed to admit that while I’m aware of Bechdel’s work, I’ve never actually read any of it. Part of the reason is that in my base of operations, Houston, it can be a bit hard to find good comic books that aren’t of the “capes and tights” variety. For such a large city, we have a surprisingly small amount of quality comic books stores in the city limits. (Dear James Sime: Please franchise Isotope to my neck of the woods. And feel to bring the bar with you.) Another reason is that I didn’t figure i was in her target audience, what with being a straight dude. I’m not too ashamed to admit that I’m an idiot for thinking that way, because the NY Times article makes her “The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For” something I’d really enjoy, especially since the article’s author favorably compares Bechdel’s book to “Doonesbury.” It looks like I’m going to be giving Amazon.com even more of my money.

Well, some of the early Dykes to Watch Out For is truly aimed at a lesbian audience; that’s not to say that a straight guy can’t follow it, but some of the humor is inside baseball, if you consider lesbianism to be baseball (which really complicates the infield fly rule, but that’s a discussion for another time.) What I’ve sampled of later Dykes, however, tends less to that and more to more general human understanding (which is understandable, as it became a storyline strip, which it wasn’t at first.)

But Fun Home, while it has gay content and themes, does not have that problem at all. (Unsurprising, as Dykes has run largely in gay papers, while Fun Home was meant to be a mainstream thing.)

And Fun Home and the Essential Dykes shouldn’t be hard to find in mainstream bookstores. (I don’t know if Houston has any gay specialty bookstores or alt bookstores with a sizable gay section; those have always been more likely places to find Dykes books than comic shops have been.)

Dykes to Watch Out For is truly one of my favorite reads ever, and I’m glad it’s finally getting the recognition it deserves…even if it took another work entirely to get Bechdel’s name out into the mainstream.
