Emo Boy: The Movie

December 5th, 2008
Author Troy Brownfield

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Vanguard Films has acquired the rights Steve Emond’s Slave Labor Graphics comic Emo Boy. Emond himself will be writing the screenplay adaptation, while Kyle Newman has been tapped to direct.  The article goes on to give a definition for “emo” (which is pretty funny, considering that the thing that emo has become now, which is more or less Goth-lite, is about 10.4 light years away from the “emotional hardcore” of the Washington D.C. punk scene where the term first originated).  This is great news for Emond; perhaps THR will spell his name correctly in the future.

I’m also amused by the line that “Vanguard discovered the book at Comic-Con”.  I like the notion of Production Assistants with mining hats and flashlights, trolling the booths for potential properties.  Actually, that’s not too far from what actually happens.

Director Newman does bring some cult cache to the project.  He’s the guy that directed Fanboys, the film that’s most famous for putting Kristen Bell in the Slave Leia ensemble.  That will finally open in February.

Eh, this book was never my bag, but the more indy books that get deals like this the better. If nothing else, it lets other people know there’s more than just superhero books out there.

edited for kneejerk douchebaggery. Thanks for calling me on it, Jen

What I love most about comics readers is how they never think twice about whether anyone cares about their overblown negative opinions.

Yeah, the Hollywood Guys at Comic-Con are intrepid spelunkers — but they prefer to wrangle someone at the publisher’s booth to do the real mining for them. They’ll ask you to basically pitch books to them because they can’t pick one up and read the back cover.

Congrats to Steve. Dan here at SLG worked on this deal for a while, and the film getting a director is a great sign!

I see that JavaScript bug still hasn’t been fixed.

Ha, in case anyone’s wondering, Jennifer was replying to a very different comment than what is there now.

Hopefully this project will keep the forward momentum it’s had, I’m really happy with how the script came out, I think it really accents the best parts of Emo Boy while adding a lot of new ideas. I can’t wait to share it with everyone.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be really something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and extremely broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!
