Smallville no more?

December 4th, 2008
Author David Pepose

Will nobody save the staple CW show? According to TVGuide via Kryptonsite, it looks as though even this season’s ratings rebound might not save Smallville.

Based on the scanned article, executive producer Darren Swimmer says there are some “actor availability” issues that may throw a wrench in the show’s proposed ninth season. Considering both Lana Lang and Lex Luthor — two sides of the show’s triangle — have managed to take time off without (too much) of a hitch, it looks like the only person they could mean is 31-year-old star Tom Welling.

Then again, part of the show’s troubles is that the title Smallville is a bit of a misnomer, as the series’ action now takes place largely in Metropolis.

To make matters worse, TVGuide reports that the climax of the series — seeing Clark Kent assume the red-and-blue togs of Superman for the first time — might not even occur, as it would conflict with the main film series. Of course, Swimmer notes, “the formation of the dual identity is what he’s going to be negotiating from here on out… he’ll start to experiment.” Does this mean a Chris Reeve-style performance in the future?

    Start over.

  2. Brain_Fish Says:

    ‘Bout friggin’ time.

  3. Dan Says:

What do you mean it would “conflict with the main television series?” What is the main television series?

  4. BSmithy Says:

yes please, the show is past its shelf-life

  5. jason Says:

Dan, go read the line again. It says “main film series,” not tv.

Though the case could be made; what film series?

  6. Acathla Says:

Hopefully they can figure some deal out so it can continue another season. This season has been awesome.

  7. Rick Rottman Says:

Isn’t Clark 30 years old by now?

  8. gohanwinner Says:

This show has really overstayed its welcome, please let it go!

  9. Roy Says:

Despite the current season has been pretty good, eighth seasons is enough. End on a good note. Besides, with my local CW station in NYC, reverting to their station call ID letters, I doubt the CW network’s going to last long either.

  10. justin Says:

I have enjoyed this season more than any other season so far, but I say let it go, and let this be the last season. Better to go out on top rather than overstay your welcome. Focus on creating a another series from the wealth of other content from DC.

Welling is gorgeous and all, but he really has no acting chops. He’s only good at playing himself. If you’ve watched him in other films you’ll see he lacks dimension and range as an actor. Of course he’ll sign on for more seasons, otherwise he probably wouldn’t be hired for anything else. I doubt he’ll go back into modeling.

  11. Rodney Says:

why not tie the tv series in the rebooted film series?

  12. OM Says:

    …Is this series still on?

  13. Jordan Elliot Says:

I can’t believe how man of you want to “let it go”. Other than HEROES there isn’t any other live action stuff on tv like this. PFFFFT…. this is fanboy site isn’t it? Wait, where am I?….

  14. mbrady Says:

you dismiss the validity of others’ opinions just because how you judge the site? Glass houses offer great views, I hear.

  15. Steve Says:

Warner’s keeps shooting itself in the foot by “protecting” their brands. These comic book characters have been around for decades and have survived hundreds of interpretations, frequently simultaneously. No one would be confused to see a Superman on TV that isn’t the same Superman in a movie that may or may not come out in a few years.

  16. Peter Says:

Tom Welling is 31 years old.

End this season with Tom in the red and blue suit flying around the city. We waited eight years to see him in the “S”, hopefully they won’t disappoint.

  17. Danielle Ni Dhighe Says:

Since the show isn’t in continuity with the film series (presumably the first two Christopher Reeve films and “Superman Returns”), I fail to see why ending “Smallville” with a scene of Welling in the costume would be a problem.

Attention: those in charge of the show, when the show ends its run, whether this season or next, end it in the best possible way: with Welling becoming Superman. Trust me, it’s not going to hurt any future films.

  18. Simon DelMonte Says:

As much as the show should end, since it’s Superman in all but costume now, this season has been rather good.

  19. durkadurka Says:

Since they are rebooting the film series anyway, wouldn’t the entire Smallville series conflict with that? Really that shouldn’t be a problem at all.

If it’s time to end the series, then end it. Better to end on a high note than to get canceled due to shoddy writing and low ratings.

Let’s see a GOOD Teen Titans live action series to take its place.

  20. Jason Says:

I hope they make a decision either way soon and not wait til the last minute. It would be great for them to have a “planned” final season that they could go into with a bang and set up some really strong stories that lead to a natural ending. I’d hate to see them have to scramble last minute to wrap up the series in the spring after such a long run on the air.

  21. Novak Says:

This “conflict with the films” was the reason given for Smallville’s creation in the first place, putting aside a young Bruce Wayne series because of the plans budding for what became “Batman Begins.” And I think, if I recall correctly, that this conflict with the film franchise was also part of the reason for dropping the proposed Dick Grayson series the CW was recently considering.

But yes, Warner or their lawyers are idiots to think that any appearance of Superman in the television series would do anything but build interest in a completely dissociated film franchise. It’s too bad the way the major production companies keep reacting in such fear and caving to their subdivisions’ turf wars, instead of finding someone with enough vision and guts to just let the different versions flourish.

Let’s all be thankful the lawyers haven’t yet thought of destroying the comics to protect the films.

  22. Brenticles Says:

I really doubt that it’s Time Warner that wants the seperation. The shows and movies are produced by seperate production companies. It’s the production companies that want to protect what they are putting out. I really doubt that Warner would be against a movie, tv series and cartoon all running at the same time, but the seperate production companies may be concerned about dilution of brand, over saturation, conflicting images, etc.

  23. Brenticles Says:

Oh and go ahead and kill Smallville, please.

  24. Brad L. Wooldridge Says:

This show should’ve ended four or five years ago; it’s lived long past its prime. However, this season has been fairly good and pretty enjoyable, mostly thanks to Erica Durance’s work as the best looking Lois Lane since Bruce Timm’s depiction of the character on “Superman: The Animated Series.”

I hope it does end well, and if not a fully suited Tom Welling, then maybe, at the very least, his Clark Kent ripping open his shirt to reveal the “S” shield.

  25. Shaun Says:

@ Jason: I read this article earlier today, and the line that Dan quoted did indeed say “… conflict with the main television series.” David must’ve come back in and edited it. No big deal… I make far too many typos myself! David probably should’ve acknowledged it, but like I said it’s not a big deal.

@ Jordan: I’ve never watched a lot of Smallville, and not in several years, but it never flipped my switch. Nor has Heroes. I can live without them. Sounds like few here will miss it. The show to be watching right now, or at least in January when it returns, is LOST. BSG isn’t too shabby either!

  26. Danielle Ni Dhighe Says:

I’ll certainly miss “Smallville” when it ends. It’s been a fun show with an eye candy cast and a solid addition to the Superman mythos. Even now, I still think it’s better than some of the Superman comics in recent years.

  27. Loren Says:

I always thought would be cool would be that, after the cast graduated, they change the name to “Metropolis” and focus on Clark becoming Superman rather than trying to keep a foot in Smallville. I think it’s kind of ridiculous that the entire cast commutes from Smallville to Metropolis every day. Ma and Pa Kent are no longer in the picture and Lana is pretty much gone. What else in Smallville is there? That said, I have been enjoying this season and hope that we eventually do get to see Clark don the costume.

  28. Ortiz Says:

You know what? I don’t care about this series since sixth season, so give me my final episode with Tom Welling in the blue and red costume, and that’s it. Peace.

  29. pskinner Says:

As much as I avoided the two (3? don´t remeber…) previous seasons, This last one has been pretty good and fresh. As someone else said, If it has to end, let it at least be a planned ending. Clark’s Red and blue has been around forever, and I think everyone would like to see him wering at leat some BIG S and maybe a red cape. Oh, and I can’t wait to see Geoff Johns episose :)

  30. Eric S Says:

As a fan of the show’s early days I believe that the series has waaayy outlasted it’s premise. It should have ended about 3 years ago.

  31. Inactiveman Says:

Could Welling not be in the suit because they want to save seeing him in the suit for the movie?

  32. rev sully Says:

I would love the next motion picture franchise of Superman & the Justice League to come from this show. As Star Trek successfully parlayed the original series into a movie franchise, et al.
I mean keep the actors. I love Erica Durance over Kristen Kruek now…the Smallville story has been told. But why lose this great ensemble?
Think about it mouthbreathers…the Smallville cast continued on The Big Screen, written by Geoff Johns anyone?

ps I’ve always thought Chloe was Mr. Mxyzptlk…

  33. Ivan Jaime Says:

I disagree heavily with idea of having Smallville tie-in with a Superman feature film. Smallville is it’s own story, love it or hate it, and after nearly eight years, let it end.

I think Warners should focus on rebooting the Superman film franchise cold turkey ala Batman. No Smallville, no Lois & Clark, no Chris Reeve Superman films. Give us something FRESH, goddammit.

  34. TJHAYUDI KWEE Says:

Yeah, let it end. The guest-stars like Justice League and others were cool back then. But now they even put Green Arrow in Metropolis???
The premises for the series is the formative years from Clark Kent of Smallville to become Superman in Metropolis.
And now he IS in Metropolis, let him be SUPERMAN for God’s sake. What else are they waiting for?
Let Clark have the power to fly, and give him the red-and-blue suit. It’s due time…

Another idea for NEW Series : Wouldn’t it be better to watch Bruce Wayne formative years, as he’s running around the world, studying martial arts, etc, connect with the underworld, espionage, mystic dealing, etc? It wouldn’t be in conflict with the movie since the film only show him at his last stages with Ra’s. And the series can have all sort of genres playing out : espionage, crime, martial art, mystic, etc.
Not to mention other DC-universe sites and characters (I would like to see Zatanna/Zatarra…)

  35. Mike Uwe Says:

If tptb end “Smallville” (after season 8 or 9) I would love to see the cast (especially TOM WELLING, Michael Rosenbaum, Erica Durance, Allison Mack & Annette O’Toole) in a -rebooted- new SUPERMAN movie!

WB could use the complete SMALLVILLE-series like some kind of giant “pilot” for such a motion picture; use the characters and base the story of such a film loosely on the show.
It worked great a few years ago (in the 80s) for the “Star Trek” (Classic)series, which made succesful the jump from the tube on the big screen.

…and I would LOVE to see TOM (Clark) wearing the “S”-uniform on the show, at least in the final scene of the final episode!!

Please WB & CW make it happen!

I really love the Christopher Reeve-SUPERMAN movies, and TOM WELLING is the only actor I want to see in (possible) upcoming new Superman-movies.
(Remember the “passing of the torch” in episode # 2.17 “Rosetta”?
Chris Reeve’ character giving lessons to Tom’s Clark/Kal-El.
After these scenes I was so sure, that TOM would be our generations next “big-screen-Superman”!!)

  36. Sr Martins Says:

I think that the most appropriate is TURN TOM WELLING INTO HE SUPERMAN OF THE MOVIES.

He`s got charisma, is a nice actor and make people that don`t like superman (me included) start at least to respect the character (superman)

Brandon Routh has nothing to do with superman myth, but Tom has a lot.

  37. jason1kent Says:

luvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv this season.luvvv Smallville, would love to see Conner come into it soon, that would be deadly!! Conner I mean Superboy now Clark is basically Superman. Stroylines sticking more to the DC universe are showing how cool this show an be, Would love a scene with Bruce wayne leaving Tess’s office as Clark comes out of the elevator, they pass, nod a hello as in being mannerly and go on their way. Would be soooo cool knowing their future etc

  38. Percival Constantine Says:

There are only two cast members I would want to see in a live-action Superman movie — Erica Durance and Michael Rosenbaum. Welling is an absolutely horrible Clark Kent. Spinning a movie out of Smallville would have been a good idea maybe four years ago. But now, it won’t work — this show has screwed with the Superman mythos far too much.

  39. Fielding Says:

I hope they can convince Tom Welling to stick around for a 9th and final season, and from the opening episode work towards a spectacular, satisfying series finale.

And I agree with those who are liking Erica Durance – excellent casting.

  40. Drew Says:

Disappointing to hear if it ends. This is the first season in a few years that has been really good. Now that they are more willing to move the character forward like they have this season, would hate to see it end now. And yeah I really don’t understand why they are worried about any overlap between the tv show and the movie.

  41. Danny Donovan Says:

You know honestly, I could live with Welling not coming back. I really think he’s one of the biggest drags on that show. Besides it’s called “Smallville” not “superman” or “Superboy” so if Welling decides to opt out for a film career (I’m sure THAT’LL take off) It sort of reminds me of the Shelly Long/Cheers thing.

She made a name for herself on an ensemble TV show, thought her star power was bigger than it was, left the show to try her hand at movies, and best she could do was Troop Beverly Hills. Meanwhile Kirstie Alley replaced her and became a hot commodity in the 80s and 90s.

The show could survive without Welling. Focus on Green Arrow for awhile Tom will come back don the red suit and give everyone a nice series finale. Hell, you could “kill him” at the end of this season, have the death and return of superman thing. Let season 9 be all about the JLA (Aquaman, Impulse, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Cyborg) and then when Welling decides to limp back he can make a grand return.

  42. sebzero11 Says:

Two seasons ago, I would’ve said “end it”.

Now, I say “Keep it coming!” I’m really enjoying this show again! The Clark/Lois dynamic is wonderful. And Lois is smokin’ hot!

As for “Smallville” being a misnomer, that’s not entirely true. While it does focus mainly on Metropolis, Lois has called Clark “Smallville” since day one, and since the show is about (mainly) Clark, and now Clark and Lois, I think Smallville still works as a title.

I’m not concerened by newsarama poster hating it. 90% of newsarama poster hate EVERYTHING!
I’m just a dork amongst dork elitists. :)

  43. The Pencil Neck Says:

I agree with sebzero11. A couple of years ago, I wouldn’t have minded seeing the series end.

But this season has been the best season of the series. As long as they can keep the quality as high as it’s been this season, I want the series to keep going. It’s better than any of the other other, similar shows (Heroes, Fringe, Sarah Connor) and basically the only TV show that I look forward to seeing.

With Millar and Gough gone, let’s lose the no-tights/no-flights rule and get this party started.

  44. dd Says:

Let it die. It’s enough of that crap.

  45. Gazoo Says:

I Love this show, I wish it never ends! Bring in Hawkman and the show will live forever!

  46. Keith Plant Says:

They should’ve kept Kara Zor-El onboard, and spined her off into a Supergirl series.

  47. Fiori Alessandro Says:

What?!Close it now that the show is good again, the seasons six and seven were nice but this year it’s really good, the changed creators give the show really fresh ideas.I hope it will go for a ninth season.
If all this people is not interested in Smallville why bother to write this blog or ask for seeing Tom in a Superman suit, (that i hope it will never happen)?
Leave the show to their fan.

Hey where is krypto i miss him?

  48. Greg Says:

Shelby (Clark’s dog) popped up briefly at the beginning of a recent episode.

They only joked about naming him “Krypto.”

  49. Daryl Says:

The whole series is full of conflicts with the movies and the comics, and that’s fine, so I don’t see what the problem is with Clark being in the blue and red at the end of the series. Heck, if the powers that be can stomach having 2 different actors playing Batman and Superman in the main movies and the Justice League movie, which is what the plan was before the writer’s strike, I don’t see what the problem is in Clark donning the big red “S” at the end of the show.

But I think it is time for the show to end, else Clark won’t become Supes til he’s 40. Hopefully, if I’m guessing right, the show will end this season with a throw down between the JL and Luthor’s Injustice League/Gang. Don’t see how this series can end with Chloe still alive though.

  50. charles david haskell Says:

THE SHOW PROVE THIS SEASON THAT ISN’T PAST THE EXPIRE DATED. THE WRITER PROVE THAT THERE IS STILL LIFE IN THE SHOW. MAYBE IT IS TIME FOR THE SHOW TO SPIN-OFF EITHER THE GREEN ARROW OR THE JUSTICE LEAGUE SHOW. HOW ABOUT A SHOW TELLING WHAT BRUCE WAYNE WAS LIKE BEFORE HE FINALLY BECOME THE BATMAN. THE WRITER PROVE THAT CLARK KENT DON’T NEED THE BLUE AND RED SUIT TO BECOME SUPERMAN. GOOD LUCK TO THE FUTURE. YOUR TRULY CHARLES DAVID HASKELL

  51. Michael Says:

ratings rebound??? I think it sucks just like the season before, time for this crap to die.

  52. FROWN Says:

I have enjoyed the show mostly because of the reinvention of Superman and the lack of the suit. It made him more human and likable to me. I hope he doesn’t put on the traditional suit and they come up with a different and better outfit the current S-man design. This show has always worked for me because it more about Clark Kent discovering himself as a person and deciding his own way and not some hoakie goody two shoes character. He is Superman w/o the suit and what’s under the suit has always mattered more the suit and I think the writers have shown that …well done… so it a suit come fine…if not better or a better one (Superman X anyone)

But I do not think this show has more than one more season. I think creatively its time to move to another DC property. May a Static series, or Teen Titans, or Huntress, or Nightwing…

  53. bobharris Says:

don’t worry about no tights no flights the producers have stuffed the show, its going to be a non event

  54. Tosha Leone Says:

Will nobody save the staple CW show? According to TVGuide via Kryptonsite, it looks as though even this season’s ratings rebound might not save Smallville.
