NPR’s Best Graphic Novels of 2008

December 4th, 2008
Author Sarah Jaffe

I’m ashamed to admit I’ve only read one that made their list. However, they’re spot on with that one. If you followed my reviews at all over at Best Shots, you’ll know that I love LOCAL with every fiber of my being. It’s quite simply one of the best comics I’ve ever read. And the collected edition, a gorgeous hardcover that includes all the backmatter from the single issues, is a treasure.

So congrats to Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly for making NPR’s top graphic novels, as well as Joshua Cotter, Yoshihiro Tatsumi, Emmanuel Guibert, and Paul Pope. Now I’ve got more books to add to my to-read list…

yea who knew you even read Local…let alone liked it…

  3. Kat Kan Says:

Of the titles listed, Alan’s War is my favorite, it’s an outstanding story. All of them are great, however.

  4. Michael C. Lorah Says:

I haven’t yet read Skyscrapers (it’s on reserve at the library) or Local, but I’ve read the other three.

Alan’s War is superb, possibly my favorite comic of the year.

Heavy Liquid is tremendous as well, though I find their argument for inclusion in this year’s list specious at best.

Good-Bye is very good. Not quite best of the year, in my estimation, but well worth tracking down.

  5. RMC Says:

Great to see Paul Pope getting a mention anywhere.

    Interesting list.

  6. Sarah Jaffe Says:

    Hey Brian, Lucas?

    :P

I have read all of them but Alan’s War and I own it, just haven’t gotten to it yet. The only things missing from the list in my opinion are American Widow and The Alcoholic!
