Batman, Hancock give movie sales one-two punch

December 4th, 2008
Author David Pepose

The superhero phenomenon once again translated into big bucks this week, as both Hancock and The Dark Knight hit #1 in movie sales.

Hancock, starring Will Smith, bumped off Wall-E, Tropic Thunder, and Transformers to become the best-selling movie purchase and rental both on DVD and Blu-Ray.

The Dark Knight, meanwhile, continued its seemingly unstoppable climb to the upper echelons of the box office, becoming the highest-selling film in iTunes history… before the movie is even available for download. That’s right, this isn’t just a record number of downloads, this is a record number of pre-orders for a download.

See? It took 30 years since Superman, but now everyone believes a comic book movie can fly.
