Hot on the heels of last week’s release of Punisher: War Zone, director Lexi Alexander revealed that she is on the short-list to helm several comic-related films, including… Jonah Hex.
“One of [the scripts] that’s been sent to me — and I’m sure it’s been sent to many, many other directors — is one I’ve never heard about called Jonah Hex,” said Alexander, Reelzchannel reported. “I opened up the first two pages and I was like, ‘Great, I’ll be doing the same thing for the next 15 years.’ But then you get into it…and on page 15 I started visualizing things.”
Jonah Hex, a DC Comics property, has experienced a great resurgence in recent years under the guidance of Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti. The title character is a gunslinging antihero with a scarred face and a heart of ice, traversing the Old West as a ruthless bounty hunter.
Developing a film on this character, however, has been somewhat rocky — while Josh Brolin from W has been rumored to play the lead role, he told MTV “when I first read [the script] I thought, ‘Oh, my God. It’s awful!’ And then I had a moment a week later and I thought, ‘Why is it awful?’ Maybe the thing to do is to do the most awful movie I can find.” In addition, the first prospective directors, Crank masterminds Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, left the project in November citing “creative differences.”
