Empire‘s coverage of the 2009 film Wolverine includes the first official image of Taylor Kitsch (“Friday Night Lights”) as Gambit, a New Orleans thief with a penchant for exploding playing cards.
In an interview with MediaBlvd, Kitsch said that the character of Gambit was similar to his Friday Night Lights character in that “both have a lack of parenthood in their lives.” While Kitsch said that he was taken aback by the cult following behind the X-Men’s resident Ragin’ Cajun, he added, “I love the character, I love the powers, and I love what they did with him. I didn’t know that much, but in my experience, it was a blessing to go in and create my take on him.”

Not bad. Gotta see/hear him in action though.

I hope they give him black pants with pink horizontal stripes!

How very… purple.

“Rogue mutant Gambit…”
Sigh…
I’ll see the movie, but i’m not expecting anything super great, even though both Gambit and Deadpool will be in it. If they kill Gambit by the end…actually, i wouldn’t be all that surprised. They did kill Prof X and Cyclops in X3 (i hate it so much!), so i wouldn’t be all that shocked.

Not feeling it.

Why do I get the feeling this is going to be the “Smokin’ Aces” of the Marvel-U?

Looking forward to seeing Gambit on the big screen.

Newsarama’s a tad late jumping on this…this picture was posted on several sites days ago.

OK Matthew! you must be so much cooler because you got the news first?! ANYWAYS….I am really looking forward to this movie! Jackman wouldn’t let it be a crap movie. I heard he was exec. Producing. I am comfortable with this since he recently paid homage to Lein Wien, thanking him for his career! Humble guy!

armando, I bet they do the red-eyes thing when he uses his powers. Otherwise, it would just look off.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Where are his red eyes? That’s not Remy LeBeau in that picture. That’s young Kenny Rogers from the old movie ‘The Gambler’. And he didn’t know the character at all before going into the role? So, he creates his own take on him? What? He should have, at least, read some of the Marvel comic books involving Gambit (like, oh say, Gambit’s series!) to get an idea. And what’s he saying about being taken aback by the cult following behind Gambit? Is that an insult to Gambit fans? I’m already depressed.

“Gambit fans” — *snortle*.
Mike Manley was SO right…

They didn’t do Sabretooth’s eyes right either, I think. In the first X-Men movie he had completely or almost completely black eyes. Despite the eyes thing he looks like he might be a cool Gambit.

Hopefully he’ll have an accent. Accents seemed to be one of the weak points in the X-Men movies. Storm’s accent disappeared in the second one and Colossus didn’t have his accent.

Gambit has got to be the most popular X-character intoduced in the last 20 years.

I thought this guy was just a run-of-the-mill pretty boy until I caught him on Friday Night Lights. I didn’t want to like his character but the combination of his acting and the excellent writing won me over. This guy has some SERIOUS acting chops and, while I can understand the ambivalence of fellow fan boys, I have a feeling he’ll turn out to be a piece of inspired casting.

“Is that an insult to Gambit fans?”
Isn’t just being identified as a Gambit fan insult enough?

“Isn’t just being identified as a Gambit fan insult enough?”
Depends who’s writing him.
Claremont (earlier work and X-Treme), Lobdell, Mackie, or Carey – I’d say its a good time to be a Gambit fan.
Milligan, Nicieza, Austen, or Layman – I’d say gag me and please let me pay you to take this comic back. Thanks for ruining a good character.

My honest question to those here (especially those citing that they need to hear him before they can pass opinion) is this..what accent exactly are you expecting?
Having been born and raised in and around New Orleans, and being 75% Coonass myself, I’ve gotta say that Hollywood has been notoriously misguided with the New Orleans accent. In movies with Cajun characters from the City you either get Kentucky-Friend-Southern or Deep-On-The-Bayou-Cajun, which are both wrong.
I’m just curious to hear what non-New Orleanian or non-Louisianian fans really expect him to sound like. And I will say, the 90′s cartoon was off a good bit too.

What the f*ck are they thinking? Lets just butcher another film. Like murdering the X-franchise wasnt bad enough, no, no. Now we are taking Remy down with us.
December 2nd, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Looks like an outtake from Casino Royale…
But as long as he’s blowing stuff up with playing cards, I’m satisfied.
So ‘Rama… where’s the Deadpool pic, hungh?
December 2nd, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Kitsch is doing a fine job in one of the best TV series out there…Friday Night Lights. It was great hearing he’ll be playing the Cajun… just one complain here as I assume the eyes will be CGI-ed later on, what the heck is a purple shirt & burgundy vest doing outside a comic book?
PS: Oh Ed, what an incredibly amusing remark, careful not to gag on your own neighing darling, it would be a shame to losse such an intellect!
December 2nd, 2008 at 6:21 pm
This is just some random 70′s guy wearing a purple shirt. I don’t see any Gambit there at all.
I still think Sawyer from lost would of made the best Gambit.

Ryan K said: “OK Matthew! you must be so much cooler because you got the news first?!”
What?!? No, that wasn’t my point. My point is that, not only for this story but for multiple news items, Newsarama is late in the game when covering comic movie news. In recent memory, there’s only been one item (Black Widow in IM2) that I saw here first.
