Watchmen character posters debut [Updated]

November 11th, 2008
Author Kevin Melrose

Earlier this morning, J.K. linked to a new Watchmen character poster spotlighting Dr. Manhattan. It’s part of a series that debuted today across six pop-culture websites, from Wired to MTV to USA Today. Internet Movie Poster Awards rounds them up, noting that EW decided to post a tiny version of the Manhattan poster, while MTV (as usual) slapped its logo on the one for Silk Spectre.

You’ve already seen Manhattan, as well as Rorschach above. The others can be found after the break.

Update: I’ve added larger versions of Dr. Manhattan and Nite Owl, and a Silk Spectre poster without that annoying MTV watermark. You can see them all after the break.

  1. Manolis Says:

what’s with the Sin City-ism of all superhero movies these days? LOL

i like some of them (rorschach) more than others (the gay comedian) :P

  2. gohanwinner Says:

Not sure Silk Spectre has the best tagline, but they’re cool looking.

  3. MisterSmith Says:

I’m still not digging Ozymandias’ look. There’s just something about him that doesn’t sit well with me.

    The rest look great.

  4. aesantos Says:

Is it just me or is Ozymandias’s costume seem like Robin’s costume in Batman Forever…and I think it even has nipples too! Please tell me I’m just hallucinating. :O

  5. serge0 Says:

the nipples are there because ozymandias costume is like a parody of the schumajer’s batman films, while night owl’s are more reminecence of the latest batman films

  6. BSmithy Says:

Yeah, Ozymandias’ costume is really hard to take ‘seriously’….

  7. Robert R Says:

In some ways, the fact that Ozymandias looks fairly goofy is a good thing for the casual movie goer, when the revelations hit.

  8. Lemurion Says:

Ozymandias reminds me of Jeri Ryan on ST: Voyager.

  9. rwe1138 Says:

    Bubastis! :)

  10. GQ Says:

How come all the men get cool “important” quotes and poses and the woman gets to show her ass and say “Tee-hee! I’m a drunken slut!” ?

  11. buttler Says:

So, do they call her the Latex Spectre? And yeah, those are some unfortunate bat-nipples Ozy’s got there. Rorschach, on the other hand, is so badass that he stole the Joker’s pants.

  12. Acrid Gunsmoke Says:

Would have been nice for them to include the Dr. Manhattan poster with the rest of these, since I still haven’t seen that one… :(

  13. Kevin Melrose Says:

    It’s at the first link.

  14. Acrid Gunsmoke Says:

Ah, totally missed that. Duh. Thanks mate.

  15. Jerry Steinhelper Says:

Disappointed that the smiley face wasn’t incorporated into each poster.

  16. Randy Says:

Jesus Christ, can they spoil the twist any more goddamn blatantly? Every single piece of promotion has gone out of its way to make Ozymandias look like the villain.

  17. Mr. Allison Blaire Says:

I was never able to take Ozy’s costume in the comic very seriously either, so I think this would be pretty fitting.Personally, he just looks like a d-bag which is what I thought he was from the first time I saw him introduced in the book. I wondered what somebody completely unfamiliar with the books would think.

  18. Dalarsco Says:

Well, ideally everyone will have gone and read Watchmen after seeing the trailer, but yes, that Ozymandias poster is such a huge spoiler. Of course, we are looking at it from the POV of knowing the ending already. Maybe it’s only obvious if we already know it.

  19. Auguste Miller Says:

    Not too wild about these.

The comedian poster is the only one i really dig.

  20. Kali Says:

    Wow. Way to fail, Snyder.

Okay, disclaimer. I’m a huge Watchmen fan and ten years after first reading it, I still pull it off my bookshelf and read it again every few months.

I’m uncomfortable with Laurie’s poster when contextualized with the others.

    1. Everyone else faces forward, Laurie gets an ass shot.

    2. Everyone else’s quote is about sacrifice, protecting society, and similar ruminations on the Greater Good/Justice and Applied Methodology for Achieving Same, but Laurie’s comment is about being stupid. Even if it’s a direct quote, it just seems like such an odd choice for her character poster, particularly if these character posters are supposed to each be a one-shot precis showing the essence of the character, e.g., Rorschach scares people, Adrian thinks in terms of Big Ideas, Dan struggles with their collective legacy, and Laurie is…being stupid and is used to it.

    3. Her film costume is so *not* an improvement over the classicism of her comic costume.

  21. Richard J. Marcej Says:

@ GQ; “How come all the men get cool “important” quotes and poses and the woman gets to show her ass and say “Tee-hee! I’m a drunken slut!” ?”

I didn’t read that into the quotes at all.
Silk Spectres’ quote, I think, refers to going out and fighting crime, (especially dressed the way she was). This was Something that her character in the book was never comfortable with.

  22. The Ugly American Says:

It looks like Rorschach is taking a dump on that rooftop.

I just totally ruined that poster for you.

  23. aaron debene Says:

and silk spectres ass is too big too. if your gonna wear spandex, at least lay off the donuts toots

  24. Kali Says:

@aaron debene: Her posterior is “too big”? Using what criteria, exactly?

  25. Bud Says:

Please please STOP with the sin city ism of promo materials. It is bad enough what Miller is apparently doing to Spirit.

  26. Ortiz Says:

@aaron debene: if you think that’s too big, just imagine Beyonce as Wonder Woman, damm, that’s what I call too big. :D
    Peace.

  27. Glenn Simpson Says:

Well, they must be doing something right with that Silk Spectre poster – “Malin Ackerman” is a top search on Yahoo right now.

  28. Manic Man Says:

These characters are supposed to be OLD! Well, middle-aged, not to insult anybody over 40… Ozymandias looks like he’s twenty-five! I guess Laurie was younger than the rest… but still Ozymandias should be 40…

  29. Glenn Simpson Says:

Maybe we’re seeing them as they were in their prime, and they’ll be aged for the main action in the film. Probably better to sell the movie using the “young” look…

  30. AllenCrosse Says:

Life? A “highly overrated phenomenon?” Really?

Huh… I thought Doc Manhattan was supposed to be smart.

  31. GQ Says:

“and silk spectres ass is too big too. if your gonna wear spandex, at least lay off the donuts toots”

    Please be kidding.

  32. Strucker Says:

“@ GQ; “How come all the men get cool “important” quotes and poses and the woman gets to show her ass and say “Tee-hee! I’m a drunken slut!” ?”

I didn’t read that into the quotes at all.
Silk Spectres’ quote, I think, refers to going out and fighting crime, (especially dressed the way she was). This was Something that her character in the book was never comfortable with.”

Also, if you see at the fight of the image, there is someone knocked out, lying unconscious on the floor…

Also, well… She is great where it shows…What’s the problem with that?

  33. Mattyoung Says:

“These characters are supposed to be OLD! Well, middle-aged…”

In the background of the Dr. Manhattan poster, Oz and Nite Owl look pretty age appropriate. The shot from the riot that Nite Owl is in takes place in the past, if you don’t think that one bit of chin looks ‘old enough’. Ozymandias always seemed rich enough to afford moisturizer, and if you hide his crows feet behind a mask…

Laurie’s pose is very, as Heidi MacDonald put it, “almost, but not quite, mastered the “ass and tits facing the same way” pose so beloved of comic book covers.” Ironic? Or exploitive? You decide.

“Her film costume is so *not* an improvement over the classicism of her comic costume.”

I actually like her movie costume. It’s a bit too shiny for my taste, but still makes the point of being an incredibly tight, skimpy costume with an “actual” comic book female costume painted on top of it. And the garter belt-boots actually strike me as not only kinkier, but a nod to her mother’s costume.

    Eh, could just be me.

  34. aaron debene Says:

i just think its easier to be interested in a woman character if shes got a cute little butt. thats all

  35. DavidH Says:

I thought that Oz’s costume had been “X-Menized”. Then I saw the Batman costume and it made more sense. Unfortunately.
