Neil Gaiman, who’s been relatively mum about his upcoming turn on Batman with “Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?”, provides MTV’s Splash Page with a tease and a correction, but little else.
“It starts at a little bar, and Selina Kyle and Joe Chill come along,” Gaiman said over the weekend, “and after that, it gets really odd.”
He also confirmed that the Andy Kubert cover that made the rounds back in September isn’t the actual cover for #685: “What it was, was a trial of an idea to draw the cover of Batman #1, and it didn’t work out really well.”
Grant Morrision, who will return to the series after Gaiman’s two-parter, said “Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?” is “going to be quite a personal thing” unrelated to what follows.
“Think of it as Neil Gaiman’s Batman,” Morrison said. “It’s not about continuity. It’s more kind of an overall look at the whole mythos.”

Maybe this will just be a taste of Batman for Gaiman and he’ll want to do more, leading to his taking over All Star Batman for a while. It would be nice for that title to attain some of the grandeur and acclaim that All Star Superman (rightly) received, rather than being both a crashing bore and a very bad comic book.

Sigh: I really hate the idea of a new Batman #1.

That sells quite well…
The internet is so far removed from reality. It’s pretty funny…

Must say, though, the idea of Gaiman on AS Batman is very appealing. I’d love to see him paired up with Quitely, although I’m not sure how likely that would be.

I’m still not sure what’s going on with R.I.P. but I really can’t wait to see Gaiman’s issues and Denny O’Neil’s issues post R.I.P. and that “Battle for the Cowl” mini-series. I’m getting pumped for Batman in 09!

At what point did I reference the sales of All Star Batman? Of course the sales are high. Jim Lee is drawing it. That doesn’t make it good.
Thinking that high sales automatically equal a quality product seems to me a farther removal from reality.

I’m “pumped” for Batman in ’09, but only if Morrison leaves the book, Bruce Wayne is put back in the cape and cowl, and if Morrison’s entire run on the book is retconned out of existance.
I would enjoy a Gaiman run of All Star B&R though. Wrap up Frank’s story (which I don’t hate, I just take it as goofy, ludicrous fun) and bring on Neil! Keep Jim Lee on, by all means, if he’s willing to stick with it!
Then have Morrison do a sequel run on All Star Supes. Just keep him away from Batman (pains me to say that, considering how much I loved his Arkham Asylum GN) or any other in-continuity DC titles.
Oh, and shouldn’t Joe Chill be dead? Perhaps that’s been retconned?

I find the Kubert cover interesting, especially since it is being used for the already solicited hardcover for this story. It doesn’t look like a mock up space filler cover either, it looks legit. Possible swerve by Neil?

Is there evidence that it doesn’t equal quality? Quality’s pretty subjective, after all. Someone MUST like it if they’re buying it.
Or is it that just because message boards whine about books, they have to suck?

I don’t think Jesus has much say on what goes on in DC, wombat.

To bad Gaimens not staying on longer.I know Morrison is the smartest person who has ever lived and those who don’t like his Batman can’t understand big words and big ideas and are just fanboys but his Batman has been, iffy.

I doubt that even Jesus would forgive Dan DiDio for DC’s lousy output these days.

Out of curiosity, is there a release date? I can’t find it among the solicits on DC’s website and they have all the January releases posted.

Oh, never mind. It’s the second and fourth weeks of February.
