APE: Stuff I got at the show

November 3rd, 2008
Author JK Parkin

Here’s a look at some of the loot I brought home from the Alternative Press Expo this weekend:

Rob Osborne of Sunset City and 1000 Steps To World Domination fame has a series that’s been under my radar called The Nearly Infamous Zango. So far three issues have come out from Rob’s self-publishing imprint, Absolute Tyrant. It’s a comedy about a super villain who isn’t quite so super, and features a bunch of characters with awesome names like Deacon Dredd and R.I.P. Van Freako.

–Gina Gagliano gave me a mini-comic that First Second editorial director Mark Siegel created, titled A Brief History of First Second. She also told me the name of the book that Faith Erin Hicks is doing for the imprint, which I have subsequently forgotten (I was lucky I remembered where I parked). Faith talks about how she got the assignment here.

Or Else #5 by Kevin Huizenga, who can be seen signing a copy of Curses here:

–A sample of Top Shelf’s AX manga magazine, which I got for Chris Mautner.

–The latest Valentine collection by Dan Cooney, who also teaches at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. I haven’t read it yet, but it’s got some nice-looking artwork.

–A mini-comic of artwork by Becky Cloonan called Bury Your Treasure. Becky unfortunately didn’t have copies of PIXU II at the show, as they were in route from the printer in Brazil. You can order them online from Khepri.com.

–Several comics created by some of Matt Silady’s students at the California College of the Arts, where he teaches. Here’s two of his students, Rebecca Hendin and Jafe Meltesen-Lee:

Rebecca had a book called 800 Days, which she printed in full color. Jafe drew a book called Dwarves Behaving Badly, or Why I Hate Elves, which was written by Danger Bob.

–Two comic collections of Ben Costa’s online strip, Shilong Pang. Also got his mini-comic Cloaca Maxima, a Kafka-meets-Juno kind of story. I think this is my favorite comic from the show (that I’ve read so far, anyway).

Brazilianoir by Emily Stackhouse and Nicholas Shahan, a noir-ish mini-comic with German spies and gypsies.

  1. Chris Mautner Says:

What, no Kramer’s Ergot? Don’t you have $130 stuffed in a mattress somewhere for the express purpose of buying expensive comics anthologies?

Thanks for picking up that Ax anthology.

  2. JK Parkin Says:

It was tempting, but I didn’t let myself get caught up in the spending frenzy. Plus it’s about $50 cheaper on Amazon.

  3. Faith Says:

The Fielding Course! (Name of the book I’ll be drawing for FS, minus exclamation point.) Written by Laurence Klavan and Susan Kim who are awesome.

  4. Rebecca Hendin Says:

Twas nice to meet you, sir! Thanks for picking up my book. I’m sure it goes down quite nicely with “Dwarves Behaving Badly.” :)

Hi, as the editor of that above mentioned AX collection i also thanks you sir!
I was there myself in APE, my first time on the west coast of the US… the AX book was very well received by all who saw the sampler… watch out for it next summer please. By common agreement it looks like being THE manga book of next year. Certainly we are working hard towards making it good.
