Empire magazine's "Star Trek" cover

Empire magazine has a new batch of images from J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, plus a cover that gives a nod to that classic photo of Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner as Spock and Kirk.

Star Trek opens in May 2009.

Spock is sexy glaring like a runway model…ehg that’s not in continuity.

    LOL, ejulp!

I think anyone who would want this to fit into continuity (and I am one of those geeks), I think we can pretty well forget about that. Quinto, as Spock, still looks more like a wax statue(or an oversized action figure) than a real person, and I have to agree with people saying that Chris Pine looks an Ambercrombie & Fitch model. Not James T. Kirk. I mean, do you think Kirk would ever take such time to fuss with his hair? I mean Kirk now, not Shatner (who, obviously never had enough hair to actually fuss with). The whole Kirk as metrosexual thing just isn’t flying with me.

Really, I think the whole movie hinges on how believable or not Pine is as Kirk. What little I’ve heard about the supposed plot (older Spock goes back in time to help foil a Romulan attempt to go back in time and kill young Kirk) seems awfully thin, and potentially riddled with plot holes. If that’s the case, then it’s up to the characters to carry the film. The characters were always what Trek did best, but I’m not sure they can do it.

Urban, Pegg and perhaps Quinto will be fine… But Pine, and the rest of the cast, are total wild cards at this point. Casting a Sulu who is apparently eight years older than your Kirk doesn’t fill me with confidence.

No, sorry. Just no. Not going to see this, not excited. It’s final evidence for me that the whole franchise is stalled and they don’t know what to do next. Seriously, guys in Kirk and Spock drag?

    SERIOUSLY? Damn.

The Bad Astronomy Blog has in interesting comparison of that cover shot to the original series photo that it’s trying to duplicate.

  5. Richard J. Marcej Says:

Is it just me or does Chris Pine’s head look abnormally large in that photo.

He looks more like Jimmy Neutron than Captain Kirk.

  6. RichYan33 Says:

He does look like he’s trying out for the role of The Leader in Hulk 3.

Anyone know why Kirk is wearing black in all the pics? They said it was a plot point.

  7. Mark Engblom Says:

They look like a couple of teenagers heading off to the Halloween costume party.

Plus…did we walk in on something? Sheesh.

  8. Shaun Says:

Jimmy Neutron!! LMAO, Richard… That’s it!

Any chance I had of taking this movie seriously has just been shot out to hell. Good thing I wasn’t planning to see it anyhow.

    re:metrosexual kirk

Agree with a lot of your post…BUT have you forgotten the tons of eyeliner Shatner had on in the original series…he pry paved the way to me being the metrosexual man I am today!

  10. Erech Says:

    “Captains Blog, Stardate… what? It’s a reimagining!!”

  11. Shaun Says:

Fair enough, ejulp! You’re right about Shatner and the eyeliner in the early episodes of the original series… I’m not sure that they used it as much later on. Then again, I think the lighting was different in later episodes, and a lot of other changes as well. Nimoy wore quite a bit of makeup himself, probably in order to pass as more “alien” or something.

So, you’ve got a point But still, Shatner wore the makeup well. Even if the term “metrosexual” had been around then, I don’t think Kirk would’ve been described as such. I’m sure Chris Pine’s a nice a guy and all, but I simply don’t see Kirk when I see him. Same goes for Sulu, Uhura, and the kid with the Brillo pad on his head playing Chekov. I

‘m not even sure about Quinto at this point… I was convinced he was a great choice for Spock, but the pictures I’m seeing lately are making me think otherwise.

    @Shaun

Quinto rubbed me the wrong way in Heroes..I’m actually not that crazy about him as an actor, he’s a bit cardboard, something corny in his delivery. That being said, I do think that it’s possible the script and direction on the show, for his character, may have been the problem, and not the actor’s. SO he may be better in something else…I have concerns about the movie in general, but will be first in line to see it.

  13. Shaun Says:

You’re right about Heroes in general, ejulp… The show is CRAP. I thought that when it first started. I decided to stick with it for a while, figuring most shows need a bit of a shakedown cruise, and near the end of the first season I thought the show was starting to really become something. The episode “Company Man” was excellent! But then they did this lame ripoff of the X-Men’s “Days of Future Passed” and the season finale was dreadful. I gave up completely two or three episodes into season two, and I never went back. from what I hear, I haven’t missed much. Anyhow, I think Quinto’s problem on that show has been the hackneyed writing and lack of direction.

I hope I’m wrong and the Star Trek movie is a lot better than I expect it to be. You’ll have to post your thoughts here after you see it… If true fans seem to mostly like it, I might be convinced to go after all.
