DeMatteis: ‘My comic book Saturday night’

Justice League #1

I know a lot of folks — including myself and several of my fellow bloggers — have fond memories of the Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire Justice League. Those folks will no doubt enjoy reading J.M. DeMatteis’ recent post about how editor Andy Helfer talked DeMatteis into scripting the book and what the writer calls “one of the most enjoyable gigs I’ve ever had in comics.”

This was always one of the smartest and wittiest comic books. It had that “Boston Legal” vibe before there was Boston Legal. This is one of the few series other than classic childhood stuff that I continue to haul out and re-read. It was truly a cast, both on the creative side and with fictional characters, of the best. I always recommend this work highly.

This is STILL my favorite incarnation of the Justice League.

God, I still can’t believe I haven’t read this run…I really want to…I assume DC has some premiere editions or something.

  4. Dan Coyle Says:

    The third hardcover recently dropped.

It’s sad to think that this book haunts the dreams of the Geoff Johnses of the world.

Has DeMatteis blogged at all about the changes to Spider-Man? DeMatteis is, IMO, the best Spidey writer ever. Kraven’s Last Hunt alone earns him that title, and it was proof positive that a married Spidey worked. Now it’s all wiped away as far as Marvel’s concerned. But it was the talent of the writer that made the difference, not whether or not Spidey was married.

Anyhow, getting back on topic. I’ve never read this run of Justice League, but I think I’ll try to track down the collected editions. Even if I hate the way they dressed Black Canary there (that is BC, isn’t it?)… She looks like she walked out of Flashdance or something.

  6. Dan Coyle Says:

DeMatteis has said that he didn’t have a problem with the marriage and liked writing it. He’s also contributed a story to Amazing Spider-Man Family.

  7. Ricardo Amaral Says:

Best Justice League ever. This was a tour de force in chracterization and plot evolution, without ever resorting to gore or women in refrigerators. It makes Identity Crisis even more stupid when you read it. Or Infinite Crisis and its Max Lord wannabe (Geoff, you did what Ron Marz did to Hal Jordan: made him completely out of character!).
Sigh. At least there will be a new Hero Squared by next year. Best thing out of JLI.
And I also loved the JLE and Giffen’s Legion. Good times when they allowed him to run wild.

  8. Tenzil Kem Says:

Best League ever. Shame the overgrown fanboys running DC can’t understand why this book was a hit. No one will be reading Brad “emergency flamethrower” Meltzer’s run in 20 years.

  9. Dan Coyle Says:

Tenzil Kem: At the very least, if it’s read, people will wonder what the heck actually HAPPENED in that book.

dematteis recently discussed spider-man on this podcast.
