The Dark Knight swings onto DVD Dec. 9

This year’s No. 1 movie and the second-highest grossing film in the United States ever will be released on DVD just in time for the holiday season, as The Dark Knight will be released on DVD Dec. 9. Per the Hollywood Reporter, it will include the six IMAX-filmed sequences, a production documentary and no doubt a lot of other special features that we’ll hear about between now and then.

Kung Fu Panda sequel due in 2011

Jack Black and Angelina Jolie have signed on for Pandamonium, the sequel to the summer hit Kung Fu Panda. Per Variety, the film will be released June 3, 2011.

The original film, which came out a few short months ago, made more than $626 million worldwide, “making it DreamWorks Animation’s most successful non-sequel film ever,” the trade reports. Kung Fu Panda comes out on DVD Nov. 9.

Eddie Campbell, TV star?

On his blog, comics creator Eddie Campbell talks about preliminary talks that happened last year about bringing The Fate of the Artist to the small screen:

In June 2007 two tv producers phoned me out of the blue to talk about adapting my Fate of the Artist to the small screen and I found myself having a series of daytime sessions at assorted pubs as we got to know each others’ ideas about what such an adaptation might look like. They were pleasantly surprised to find that Fate was just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, and it was suggested that the Snooter in fact showed greater dramatic/comedic potential. One thing we particularly agreed on was that there was scope for a combination of live action and some kind of animation and we talked about the ways this had been done previously.

The Ticker

• Guess you can’t blow him down … Popeye’s nemesis Bluto gets a statue in E.C. Segar’s hometown of Chester, Ill. [Cartoon Brew]

• Apparently Fox’s Terminator show isn’t doing very well in the ratings and is rumored to be heading toward cancellation. The freshmen weird-science show Fringe, however, is doing well enough to receive a full-season order. [TV Squad, Variety]

• Cinematical counts down Four “Fantastic Movie-Related Simpsons Images,” including this one:

which I believe was used at the beginning of the most recent season premiere.

• Speaking of Boba Fett, check out this hoodie comics writer C.B. Cebulski recently bought:

• Director DJ Caruso is thinking about filming the Y the Last Man flick in Chicago. [Chicago Tribune]

• And finally, between the new HBO/Norman Lear wrestling show and Mickey Rourke’s big wrestling film tearing up the film festivals, you have to wonder if wrestlers are the new ninjas/robots/vampires/zombies. Future comic creators looking for a big idea, get yourself a Ric Flair DVD and get to work.

Of course the Terminator show is doing poorly. The main reason it got such good rating in its first season was because of there being basically no competition because of the writer’s strike.

Networks do this all the time. Premiere a show at mid-season and dance a happy dance over its good ratings, then premiere the second season during the fall when the competition is stiffer and wonder what the hell went wrong.

Woo-hoo! I can’t wait for TDK on DVD. Now if only I had an IMAX screen in my house.

OTOH, why, oh why is there a need for Kung Fu Panda 2? I liked the first one, far more than I expected to. But the story is OVER… Nothing more to see here kids, move along. I know it’ll likely make a ton of money, but probably not as much as the first one. At least I hope not. It’s bad enough that Shrek overstayed his welcome and won’t go away. And who asked the Madagascar critters to come back?

Well, at least no one’s trying to remake old classics like Yogi Bear…

    Oh. Wait.
