I have to disagree with those that say Shooter's LSH didn't get a chance. It had MORE of a chance of capturing the excitement and energy that Johns' take did. It was the flagship book, coming out monthly. And yet Johns managed to create more energy and excitement over having the characters appear intermittently across various titles.

It comes down to storytelling. Johns has managed to inject the franchise with a sense of wonder, excitement, energy and direction... and all outside of the pages of the team's OWN BOOK. No one's been able to do that for years.

For the first time in years, I actually care about these characters again. They look, feel and "sound" like a team. No more "eat it grandpa" posturing and post-adolescent whining. No more silly lockerroom towel-snapping and raspberry-blowing. Those days appear to be gone. We've got three-dimensional characters with a sense of history again.

No way in heck is DC going to drop the ball on this unexpected momentum. Stick a fork in the threeboot and go after the Lightning!

I think if Johns hadn't decided to start writing his version of the legion, Shooter's book might be getting more attention. But when you're on issue 13 of a comic, and it's announced that Joe Bigname will be taking over the book as of issue #20, a LOT of people drop the book until then, assuming that the interim issues will be a literary lame duck session, with little more than cleanup and stacking up the chairs going on. So since the assumption for months has been that Johns would be taking over Legion (or at least being in charge of what the new status quo will be), the Threeboot legion was already dead on the vine.

I've enjoyed the Threeboot all along, including Waid's issues. If it had been given more of a chance when Shooter took it over, I think it could have found an audience. But with Lightning Saga already in play before Shooter even got on the book, I got the impression he was being given a ship to sail out to the sea and junk. People were already looking ahead to "the NEXT Legion" and ignoring the perfectly good one that was here now.

I don't know that the Lightning Saga version was the original one. My recall of LSH trivia isn't what it once was, but that version had Karate Kid and Sensor Girl on the same team... isn't that a little problematic for continuity?

DC's editorial is to blame for all this mess. As soon as Shooter started his run, DC announces this huge Legion of 3 Worlds (actually a Superman story) which virtually ignores the current book and marked it for death (no wonder, the main title suddenly became unspeakable-of on Comic-Cons).
Waid didn't have a successful run on LSH Threeboot, however, and according to most of us, fans of the book, Shooter just started to give it a good name, after dealing with Waid's loose points and lack of characterization.
Oh well. Hopefully, Shooter will be back with the Legion at some capacity. He was doing good - probably the best since Giffen's 5-Year-Gap.

Oh, I think we know what will happen. By the end of LO3W there will be only one Legion left -- the original, "Lightning Saga" version. And they'll get their own series again sooner or later.
