Looking forward to Milestone

September 29th, 2008

I mentioned last year how much I dig those Milestone comics from back in the ’90s. It was announced in San Diego this past summer that the Milestone characters would join the DC Universe. Great news.

At Baltimore Comic-Con this weekend, we learned that Static will soon make his first appearance in the DCU. His debut entry will be in Terror Titans #4. If I am reading the DC Comics site correctly, Static’s appearance in Terror Titans #4 should hit stands in January.

Making a wild guess based on the cover of the issue prior, it appears that Static may be facing off against Dreadbolt.

Before that happens, though, we get to see ICON and the Shadow Cabinet in the pages of Justice League of America #27, which lands in stores in November. Can. Not. Wait.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been excited about Justice League. With Milestone Media co-founder Dwayne McDuffie writing this one, I will be all over it. Added to the pull list.

I really think the integration of Milestone characters into DC is a BAD idea. A really really awful idea.

The Milestone imprint was a unique set of books examining interesting themes, in partic. Xombi, Shadow Cabinet and Static — and all of that is going to be undermined as they become part of the pointless DC multiverse, the “black superheroes” just to make the palate of aging DC characters seem more diverse. The editors involved here should be ashamed of themselves, for wrecking the work of the Milestone creators in their attempt to appear creative. This move isn’t creative — it’s lazy, sloppy and small-minded.

You need look no further than Wildstorm, another once independent & experimental imprint, now faceless and soulless ever since DC made it part of their 52 worlds.

Vince, the only thing wrong with that is the Milestone creators were not going to bring the imprint back. It was a done deal. And for all of us who missed those characters, we have to look at this new deal as a “glass half full” type thing.

It’s shallow, I know. But I want to read about Hardware, Icon, Rocket, Static, Shadow Cabinet and Blood Syndicate again. And if I have to deal with Supes, whoever Batman will be until Bruce comes back, Diana, the Flash family, GL Corps, etc. to get my fix, then so be it. The only thing that would totally suck is if DC rips the hardcore out of them. As long as DC keeps these characters true to their core, then (hopefully) it will be something we Milestone fans can deal with.
