Thankfully, Stan isn’t in charge of casting

September 26th, 2008
Author Kevin Melrose

In a brief interview with Moviefone, Stan Lee reveals that he has questionable tastes in actors. And movies:

I also hope Samuel L. Jackson comes back as Nick Fury … even though I didn’t think David Hasselhoff’s interpretation was that bad. But I’m probably in the minority on that. I feel the same way about Daredevil. I thought that Ben Affleck did a good job.

Stan, Stan, Stan … So, what do you think about the (now debunked) rumor that Will Smith might play Captain America?

I would love us to do something with Will Smith, but I don’t know that he’s Captain America. That would be a long shot. It would be a real leap to make Captain America black … then again, I don’t know. It might be a really smart thing. If Barack Obama becomes President who knows … suddenly a lot of our characters will be black!

Um, Excelsior?

Is he really trying to get more bigots to hate Obama? Not that you should give into bigotry..but that was a REALLY weird thing to say if he’s talking about existing characters.

I don’t think he’s going there, I think he’s making a very good point poorly.

If you think about how the Marvel U still reflects the place and time from whence it came (i.e. the 60′s) and that much more segregated and (I guess) racist time it makes sense that a lot of the heroes would be white, right? It was a predominantly white world and so the MU reflected that with a lot of white characters. As our real world heroes represent a greater level of diversity so too should the reflection of those heroes…right?

  3. Russell Burlingame Says:

I’ll stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Stan defending Hasselhoff’s depiction of Nick Fury…although given the script, it’s hard to see the fact that his performance wasn’t bad. He’s delivering bad lines well.

  4. Ed Says:

Eh, Stan will pretty much respond with the most positive thing he can say when asked questions like this. Why waste time picking on him over it?

  5. Luke Says:

Stan Lee’s movie taste may suck but I’d love to seee more black heroes! Still waiting for a major Deathlok revival..

  6. Clem rusty Says:

I like Ben Affleck’s role as Daredevil too, but like Stan I guess I’m in the minority (about Affleck in general too).

Also, keep in mind Sta was born in a different time: he’s probably not tryion to be bigoted or anything.

However, I do think Matthew Fox from Lost would be a great Captain America.

  7. Pedro Bouça Says:

Hasselhoff is probably the BEST thing about that movie! The script was terrible and the cast is so bad that Hasslehoff sounds like sir Lawrence Olivier compared to his co-stars…

    Best,
    Hunter (Pedro Bouça)
