McConaughey, Smith definitely out as Cap; Norton not too sure about The Hulk, either

If you were clinging to the rumor that Will Smith is in talks to play Captain America in the upcoming Marvel Studios movie, you can let go now.

The same goes for those who bought in to the earlier gossip about Matthew McConaughey. All three of you.

MTV’s Splash Page, which tends to fuel casting rumors one day before striking them down the next, gets the definitive word from the two actors: Smith says he hasn’t been talking to Marvel, and isn’t interested in playing the Sentinel of Liberty. And while McConaughey thinks Captain America is “a super cool name,” he hasn’t heared a peep from the studio.

However — here comes the birth of another rumor! — he tells Splash Page that he was a big fan of The Incredible Hulk television series. Cue speculation that McConaughey is in talks to star in the next Hulk movie.

But will there be another Hulk movie? What about an appearance by Bruce Banner in The Avengers? Don’t ask star (and screenwriter) Edward Norton.

“The minds of Marvel are sometimes opaque,” he tells Splash Page. “I won’t say [they're] obtuse, but I don’t have any idea what they want to do.”

I still Aaron Eckhart would be perfect as Cap. Now that there’s no more Batman in his future (unfortunate, but what can you do?), I hope this happens.

Casting yet another Banner/Hulk doesn’t make much sense. I wouldn’t mind another Hulk movie at all if it’s a sequel to the Norton movie. It wasn’t really any more successful than the movie Ang Lee made, but it didn’t badly either. I think it’s just a hard sell to mainstream audiences, and people who were turned off by the Lee movie either decided not to go, or even thought this summer’s may have been a sequel to that. I think it may have been lost in the shuffle with all the films out there out there at time, including Iron Man.

The difference being, I thought The Incredible Hulk was a much better movie than Lee’s film, and something that lends itself better to a continuation whether it be an actual sequel or use of the Hulk in another Marvel project. By no means was it a perfect movie, but an enjoyable film that I look forward to seeing again on DVD (esp. that extended version).

    Oh praise the heavens.

Loved The Incredible Hulk. If they are going to make a sequel it should most definitely have Ed Norton. If he doesn’t want to do it or isn’t available then I say just keep the Hulk to the Avengers movie for now.

    Too bad about Smith.

    Shaun:

Do you know if the Incredible Hulk DVD

will have that deleted scene of Banner

meeting Captain America at the Pole?

  6. Jean Says:

I hope Marvel doesn’t blow it further and fails to secure Norton for TIH sequel and Avengers.

  7. Ed Says:

Yeah, it definitely sounds like Marvel are the ones screwing Norton around and threatening to mess up chances at a good future instalment for the Hulk on film.

  8. Matt Says:
