That Parker luck just got a whole lot better

The Times of London apparently has the inside track on Tobey Maguire’s sweet, sweet deal to star in the fourth and fifth installments of Sony’s Spider-Man franchise.

According to the newspaper, Maguire is expected to earn a record $50 million in salary and profit sharing for the two movies, which will be shot back to back over six months next year. The deal reportedly also includes early mornings and evenings off to spend time with his 22-month-old daughter. Awwww.

The Times reports Sony is expected to reveal in the next few days whether Kirsten Dunst will reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson.

The participation of Maguire and director Sam Raimi had been up in the air for some time, with the actor saying his involvement would depend largely on Raimi’s. The director, in turn, wanted to wait until he had seen a script.

But earlier this month reports circulated the two finally had inked a deal with Sony Pictures, which plans to release Spider-Man 4 in May 2011 — putting it at odds with Marvel’s The First Avenger: Captain America.

Just The Times is fine . . . or of the UK, it’s a national rag.

Nothing against Dunst but I’m kinda hoping she’s not back

Yawn… I wish I could still get excited about Spidey, but I can’t. Maybe Spidey 4 will knock it out of the park (The Lizard would help that), but unless Spidey 3 can be written off as a dream I’m not sure I’ll care much.

Add the fact that films like The Dark Knight and Iron Man make Spider-Man look like child’s play, and the lingering (bad) aftertaste of OMD in the comics, and it’s just not that big of a deal to me.

Oh, and Sony deciding to step on the toes of Captain America is just wrong. Maybe that’ll come back to bite Sony on the ass. We’ll see.

Tobey McGuire’s not the ideal Peter Parker to me but I’m glad that he’s coming back. I generally don’t like it when they change actors for roles. Ditto for Kirsten Dunst. The only one that is truly irreplaceable is the actor who plays JJJ.

Love Raimi and his Spidey movies. Me, I’d love it if 4 and 5 had 1 villain a piece. When 6 rolls out they can do the Sinister Six. Doc Ock, Sandman, Venom can return, the villain for 4, the villain for 5 plus Carnage (Carnage really doesn’t need his own movie, Venom does sure but not Carnage) can round out the baddies. Base that story loosely on the first ASM annual that involved the Sinister Six. Well that’s just me.
