As if that Will Smith-as-Captain America rumor weren’t enough, now actor Michael Caine seems to confirm long-running speculation about who’ll play the villains in the next Batman movie.
In an interview with MTV’s Splash Page, Caine relates a conversation with a Warner Bros. executive in which Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman were named in the parts of The Riddler and The Penguin:
“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘S–t, they’ve done it again!’” [Laughs]
Caine’s unnamed studio source may have the inside track, or he simply may have been answering the question with a “dream cast.” Heck, there aren’t even any indications a script has been written for the third film.
Although there have been many rumors about who the villains will be in the sequel to The Dark Knight and which actors might play them, Depp and Hoffman as The Riddler and The Penguin is the one with the most traction.
However, earlier this month, Depp said he hadn’t been cast in the movie. Still, he said, “It seems like it’d be a fun gig for a while, yeah.”

Keep Depp out of my Batman movies. Seriously.

I don’t think the logistics of it would ever work out but I’d love to see David Tennant as the Riddler.
Johnny Blaze: Aaron Eckhart has said in an interview that Two-Face is indeed dead.

While I have no problem with Johnny Depp as the Riddler(Jim Carrey was a bit over the top for my taste!), when I saw the name Hoffman as the Penguin, I thought that they meant Dustin, & though I admire him as an actor, I thought they had lost their minds! Philip Seymour Hoffman, on the other hand, seems like a fine choice. He has a good track record & it is easily within his range(hell, for the most part,I had no problems with Danny DeVito’s portrayal!)The same can be said about Depp, regardless of your personal opinion of him, he is no stranger to box-office success & is quirky enough to play an eerily menacing villain. While I’m here I may as well put in my two cents about the Catwoman debate. First off, rumor or not, I would say NO to Cher! While talented, let’s be realistic, she is too old to play a convincingly menacing, athletic & potentially romantically inclined character like Selina Kyle(& before you accuse me of ageism, I’m almost 44 yrs. old so it’s not like I’m saying this as a member of the somewhat younger “me-generation”), after all she is conceivably old enough to be Christian Bale’s mother, talk about type-casting,& a “cougar” for this role, no less! And after Halle’s colossal bomb, it is clear that Selina Kyle is the only version that will ever be truly accepted(a tip of the cat-mask to Michelle Pfeiffer, who, while hesitant to accept the part, did a fine job,IMHO!)as the true Catwoman! Angelina Jolie could probably pull it off provided she had the time between her other projects, her charity work, her husband, & her increasingly growing brood. She seems almost as busy as a certain Alaskan politician whose name escapes me at the moment, but both seem to have the resources available for top-notch child-care, but we’ll decide in November who seems more appropriate to spend the tax-payers/movie-goers money on. Say… maybe she would be interested in playing..Nah, she already has her millions stashed away & would probably never agree to play anyone less than Wonder Woman, although she seems to have the acting chops to play a dangerous yet alluring villainess! And if Julie Newmar(while playing an admittedly “campier” version, she still did it very well!)is endorsing Jolie for the part, that seems good enough for me! Regarding the internet gossip, it seems that most if not all of the Michael Keaton naysayers changed their minds after the first Burton bat-fims came out, & we didn’t have half the internet access that we have now! It at least gives the public a more expansive venue to express their views & opinions & really does no harm. There are certainly worse things that we could be doing! In any case, it probably wouldn’t effect Chris Nolan’s casting decisions even if he does decide to make another film(& box-office dollars can make even the most die-hard actors & directors change their minds whether we think so or not!)! Let us have our fun! If you choose not to participate then that is your decision!:-)
