Cage: Kick-Ass won’t be ‘gratuitous’

From "Kick-Ass" #4

In other Nicolas Cage news — I never dreamed I’d type those words — the actor says that director Matthew Vaughn “doesn’t want to get gratuitous” with the violence in his Kick-Ass movie.

Really now, who thought there could be anything gratuitous about an adaptation of a comic that features children bludgeoning people with lead pipes, or running them through with samurai swords?

Cage, who’ll play an ex-cop determined to bring down a drug lord, tells MTV News that Vaughn’s feature will “have a different style” than the Mark Millar-John Romita Jr. comic on which it’s based.

“When I said ‘yes’ to this movie, it was to a script,” Cage says. “Then I started seeing the comics which are pretty far out in terms of violence. But I think Matthew and the script have a different style to it.”

If you ask me, I don’t like the sound of this. Please, don’t make another ‘Wanted’. Peace.

  2. tralfaz Says:

why bother making the film? It’s in the title for fvcks sakes

  3. Zesty Says:

    and this will suck then.

  4. KentL Says:

So, another Millar property that looks nothing like the original source? Geez, why bother buying the rights? Especially for something that’s pretty unknown. Why not just make your own damn movie?

  5. ejulp Says:

    F**k this, why even bother?

Wanted was fine, the changes were fine, the heart was in the same place…but Kick-Ass not being gratuitous? Cage is horrible luck, Millar why couldn’t you have waited this out till it honored your vision?

  6. ejulp Says:

Odds are, this movie won’t have costumes in it, and will be about a bunch of kids “trying to take back the streets.” Then one crosses the line, only to create a moral dilemma for Nick Cage. oooOooOooOoooOooOOOOh. A lot of Nick shouting “What am I supposed to do, he’s just a KID.” Pouty lipped introspection ensues.

  7. Brian Knippenberg Says:

Millar had this to say on his own messageboard (www.millarworld.tv)

“Relax. The film and the comic are virtually identical. We had to change a surname for legal reasons, but you won’t even notice and that’s the one and only change. It’s f***ing great.

Also, just off the phone with Matthew and we’re all buzzing. Shooting starts on Saturday and the opening scene Nic is filming is VERY violent indeed. He’s loving it, we’re loving it and soon you’ll ALL be loving it.

    Good times.”

  8. Devo84 Says:

sounds like a waste of time and money. definate pass

  9. ZooBot Says:

Methinks Nic Cage has a different idea of gratuitousness, perhaps…except he then said he looked at the comics, and it was much more far out violence. So, who to believe, Mark Millar or Nic Cage… Nic Cage.
Regardless, I’ll read anything by Mark Millar, and I’ll watch anything by Matthew Vaughn.
And, I’ll love every gosh darn minute of it, gosh darnit.

  10. Jason M. Bryant Says:

Movie scripts often don’t have as much visual detail as a script for a comic book. It’s possible that Cage looked a a script that just didn’t describe all the stuff that we’re going to see in the movie.

  11. elvee Says:

Millar still gets paid, and keeps writing comics. So what if the only similarity is the title? I’m happy for him, and I hope Romita gets a little money passed his way, too.

  12. Aaron Says:

Ugh… Maybe they will change the title of the film to “Pansy Face” or something ultra cool while they are at it….

  13. hulksmash100 Says:

Wow.. this is just another slap in the face to the comic book industry from one of its most vocal participants… & yes, only vocal literally & not even on behalf of the industry itself. Just really goes to show how very little artistic integrity Millar actually has, or none at all. He’s willing to whore out any/all of his creations to Hollywood w/o consideration for adaptation. This will end up just like Wanted, a bland co-opting of a really interesting & visually stunning concept in the funny pages.

Shame Shame Shame Millar… Well JRJR’s probably filled w/ glee as he’s been slaving for Marvel for 25 years & never had a creator owned royalty kicked back to this extent at least, if at all. & Didn’t we learn anything from Ghost Rider, when you involved Nic Cage in your movie, it’s destined to SUCK… unless it’s 1984, your name is Ethan or Joel Cohen & your movie is “Raising Arizona”… otherwise - SUCK.

What I find really interesting, is how these movies get made or optioned at least, before the comic’s plot has even been developed to an extent that would warrant the movie. This is just another sign of the coming comic apocalypse. As soon as they start making movies about comics that aren’t even in print yet… *Johnny Smoke from Oni*, we’re headed for dark times. Dark times indeed.

someone please explain to me how nicholas cage gets work. he’s played the same character in every movie since “face/off”. THE POINT OF THIS BOOK IS ITS UNFORGIVING VIOLENT NATURE. im sorry if this upsets your delicate f*cking sensibilities, world, but teenage kids say f*ck and sh*t and this book is NOT meant to be dumbed down. there’s a reason it keeps selling out, and thats because its unapologetic for what it is. so should the movie be.

    F*ck nicholas cage!

  15. DB Says:

Wasn’t Vaughn supposed to direct Thor ?

  16. Bentcorner Says:

In related news, Guillermo del Toro’s two-part motion picture The Hobbit will feature no Hobbits.

  17. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

    Mark my words…

The MPAA will force them to change the title.

This is the same group that allowed the title “Hellraiser” but NOT the subtitle “Hell on Earth”.

    Just wait.

  18. James Van Hise Says:

How can Millar say the script and the comic are the same when the character of the girl who is ten in the comic is played by a 21 year old actress in the film?

  19. Kirk Boxleitner, a.k.a. K-Box Says:

Wow. So, Mark Millar makes a comic whose only point is its stupid, meaningless violence, and then, when it gets made as a movie, the first thing that gets cut is its stupid, meaningless violence?

This literally FAILS at FAILING, without being a double-negative.

  20. The Motorokr Says:

The screenshot alone for that is awesome! Well it kind of looks promising…

  21. Joe Says:

How does Nic Cage get work? Especially after Ghost Rider and The Wicker Man… “AAAHH! THE BEES! NOT THE BEES!”
