"Why is there so much the energy put into fighting a two lines in a convention booklet and a designated spot to find a security guard?"

Revenge of the nerds against the world at large, that's why.

"Surely since we as a community are seen by the world at large as basement dwelling mouth-breathers, an official statement that we as a community will not tolerate stone age dominance displays between strangers in the dealer’s room at our largest community gathering can only be considered a positive step."

If it looks positive to the world at large and risks making the community more popular, it looks negative to BDMBs who think popularity = evil.

Uh, Pedro, show me where exactly SallyP insulted anyone. She didn't call anyone a "basement-dwelling mouth breather" at all. All she said was that stereotypes (no matter how wrong) have a basis in some truth, and she's right about that. That how they get started.

OK... So, by stretching that a bit, you can infer that she said there are some BDMBs who read comics and attend cons. Fine. There are BDMBs in ALL walks of life, probably. Are you going to argue that the kind of people Lisa and SallyP are talking about are well-adjusted individuals? I'd love to hear that argument.

What I'm trying to figure out is why you're so offended. You almost sound, um, defensive? Sorry, but if it means keeping people (and in most cases we're talking about girls and women) safe at cons and similar events it's worth risking hurting the feelings of some immature man-children who don't know how to behave in public and can't keep their hands to themselves.

Go visit Coleen Doran's blog and read about what she's had to endure for her entire adult life. Not cool. Not cool at all.

SallyP, I don't think you are helping Lisa's argument by calling the people who don't agree with the policy as basement-dwelling mouth breathers.

Personal insults against the individuals you are disagreeing with makes you look like someone who doesn't have a valid opinion. It lowers the level of discourse and makes the other side look better.

Also stating that sterotypes are grounded in fact is also terrible logic. It's the kind of logic I imagine someone could use in really weak ways to defend the behaviour that you yourself are saying should not occur at cons. I really hope people will ignore your need to insult others, and next you can keep that kind of stuff to yourself.

Seeing Comicbook fans as basement-dwelling mouth breathers may be both a cliche and a stereotype, but they ARE founded, as all cliches and stereotypes are, in fact. You would think that having the self-control, not to mention the good manners of NOT grabbing women by the ass would be self-evident, but that is apparently not the case.
