This “viral” trailer for author and comics writer Brad Meltzer’s new novel The Book of Lies is kind of interesting, really. In the video — it looks like something from a conspiracy-theory documentary on Discovery — Joss Whedon, Brian K. Vaughan, Damon Lindelof and others draw a link between the murder of the biblical Abel and the murder of Jerry Siegel’s father. They also discuss The Book of Lies, which God supposedly gave to Adam.
It’s all in service of Meltzer’s book of the same name, due in stores on Sept. 2.

Another comics connection for this book (in addition to the writer, the focus on Siegel, and the comics writers they have promoting it): That comics-style art that you see briefly in the video (one of a number of such illustrations in the book) is by Mark Lewis. Lewis has been a JSA: All-Stars cover artist and regular on the Big Bang comics (and also illustrator of the first and last stories in the Licensable BearTM stories, the TPB of which will hit next month.)

It’s sad to see good writers praising a bad writer.

Might be a good book…but this was kinda way too geeky and awkward and hard to watch, honestly.

Oh and wouldn’t this only truly be viral if the people talking about the book didn’t directly reference the title and or be less “known” contemporaries of Meltzer…just wondering, I see the term viral got tossed around when the videos or ads are a bit too “on the nose” to be effective viral marketing.

This looks very interesting. I’ve read a couple of Meltzer’s books and liked them so I will definitely check this one out.

Read an advance reader’s copy of this a while back and really enjoyed it. I’m not a fan of thrillers and have never read any of Meltzer’s novels, but after meeting him at BookExpo America this past May I decided to give it a try. You can read my review here: http://readerscircle.blogspot.com/2008/07/brad-metlzers-book-of-lies-explores.html.

I, too, read an advance copy of this book and was surprised by how much I liked it. Really great, really quick read. Looking forward to seeing how the comics community responds to it.
