Savage Dragon endorses Barack Obama

August 18th, 2008
Author JK Parkin

Forget Oprah … The New York Times blog The Moment shares the “one in five” cover for Savage Dragon #137, featuring the Dragon giving Obama his support:

Politicians have graced the pages of comic books before, for a guest appearance or two, and will again in October, as the subject of comic book biographies. An endorsement seems like the natural next step. Larsen is pleased with his story, which will mention Obama, though the senator will not make an appearance in the issue. “He’s not slugging bad guys or anything like that — although that would be cool,” Larsen says. The comic does, however, include McCain supporters. But don’t be confused. Savage Dragon definitely leans Democrat — a cover dating back to the last presidential campaign showed Mr. Dragon taking a swing at President Bush.

The new issue goes on sale Sept. 3, and one in five copies will have the Obama cover. No word at this point whom Superman plans to vote for.

Also landing in September is The Licensable BearTM Big Book of Officially Licensed Fun, which reprints (among other things) Barack’s first comic book appearance, a short sequence from Licensable BearTM issue 4 where the title character offers Senator Obama his endorsement.

Not yet, anyway. That writer is in for a surprise soon.

Do you mean editorial interference or is the writer simply bending the character to fit his views?

Dude, check before you post. Seriously, in your haste to make fun of Bush you come off reading like an idiot.

Also, it made me chuckle how 1 in 5 will have the Obama cover, meaning you would have to pay a premium to get the the variant, meaning you have to be one of those rich people to be taxed. A little bit elitist, but that’s cool ;)

Ken, just referring to the forthcoming DC: Decisions mini-series. I assume the writer was trying to be cute, but didn’t realize that snarky question will actually be answered soon. Wasn’t commenting on Larsen and Savage Dragon at all.

  6. Smackey Says:

Remember when the Tick had a variant covering each of the three possible outcomes of the 92 election? Good, tri-partisan times.

  7. LurkerWithout Says:

Damn, Dragon’s giving up on being the last Nader supporter? How sad. Also, its not like he took a punch at the real Bush. It was the super-villain Imposter…

  8. Joe Says:

Man, if Bush was punched by Savage Dragon back in the 04 election how could the public have EVER voted him into office if Savage Dragon was so violently anti-Bush?

  9. Joe Lawler Says:

Hey Joe, might want to read the post right above yours.

Superman is probably going to write in for Ron Paul…

I know he donated during the primary and you know it is a never ending battle.

  11. Mark Engblom Says:

I’m not sure who’s more obsequious, Larson or Alex Ross, who recently did a painting of the Messiah ripping open his shirt, ala Clark Kent.

Geez….the self-congratulation of the comic biz is sometimes an amazing, laughable spectacle.

  12. Jason Green Says:

Sheesh…Larsen’s not being “obsequious” here nor is the injection of politics into Savage Dragon a particularly new thing….nor has it all been pro-Democrat. He had SuperPatriot chew out Bill Clinton once, after all, and when Dragon was forced into running for president 4 years ago, he stated a preference for Ralph Nader, not John Kerry.

  13. Jeremy Says:

    And Invincible endorse Hillary

  14. Dan Coyle Says:

    The Messiah? Get bent.

  15. Daniel Says:

I’m waiting for Superboy Prime to “punch” DC Universe: Decisions out of existence before it comes out. :)

  16. Tablesaw Says:

“Savage Dragon endorses Oprah”? Really, guys?

  17. Henry Benton Jr Says:

    –The Messiah? Get bent.–

So he’s not being toted as the chosen one?
Guess it’s probably not as outlandish as saying Mephisto is endorsing McCain.

I have so many fond memories from Firefly, Death At A Funeral and his other work that it’s hard to pick my favorites. Whenever I think of Wash, I think of this moment where the crew are all playing basketball on Serenity: “Oh my God, what could it be? We’re all doomed! Who’s flying this thing?! Oh, right – that would be me. Ah, well, back to work.” – As Wash in the Firefly episode Bushwhacked.

I do tons of number gathering for these types of games because I think that history will usually give us an insight of what may happen in the future. As you may or may not know it may be hard to decipher the winning team in the NFL. This is why I consider using trends for football.

It only calls for separating your coupons by categories. I rate Thrifty with only four stars simply because enterprise coupon codes are on the smaller side, but renting from Thrifty a great overall value.
