Ant-Man getting a Christmas 2010 release?

July 24th, 2008
Author Kevin Melrose

Marvel Studios has staked out summer 2010 for its Iron Man II and Thor movies — that was announced back in May. But what will it do with Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Ant-Man?

It could be destined for a Christmas 2010 release. That’s according to Georg Szalai of The Hollywood Reporter‘s Risky Business blog, who spoke to Wright over the weekend.

Szalai points out that Marvel executives prefer “the warm months” for their movies. However, Ant-Man “plays more tongue-in-cheek than some of the company’s other properties.” (Ignore that he gets Ant-Man’s abilities wrong.)

Wright has said Ant-Man isn’t really “an out-and-out comedy.” However, that certainly doesn’t rule out a lighthearted tone that fits in with the often more family-oriented holiday slate.

No, No, No! Please do NOT put any humor in this movie, no more than what was in Iron Man, which had very little, in my opinion. As a matter of fact, make Ant-Man as serious as The Incredible HULK. If this Ant-Man movie is going to be based on the most recent Ant-Man comic (I forget the name), then the movie will be doomed! Any comical take on this character will give viewers and critics a “Honey I shrunk the Kids” kind of tone to it, which will not fit into the (hopefully “serious”) theme of the upcoming Avengers movie. MARVEL…PLEASE, please, please do NOT produce this movie to be a comical, action movie. Let the studios that make spoofs do that.

I can’t imagine Ant-Man as a summer tentpole kind of flick, so I think Christmas is probably ideal. What’s wrong with a nice PG, family-friendly adventure flick? As long as they don’t get too campy with this (and Wright has said he won’t), I don’t think it would spoil the chances of a decent role for Ant-Man in an Avengers movie (even an Ultron story).

And really, I think there will be comparisons to Honey I Shrunk the Kids no matter what. If they try to be too serious, I can see the critics proclaiming that it’s “Honey I Shrunk the Kids minus the fun.”

Wright has demonstrated a lot of skill with serious moments in very silly films. I trust him to mix action and comedy more than someone like Tim Story.

I’ll be keeping my eye on this just to see if they can pull it off. I wonder how serious a movie you can do with Ant Man.

  5. Rich Johnston Says:

It is being written by Joe Cornish of Adam & Joe fame. I’d bet on a comedy…
