A new, full trailer for The Spirit has been leaked online — it’s the one set to debut next week at Comic-Con, presumably — and so far Lionsgate has been a little slow in pulling it. (It’s been yanked from Trailer Addict and YouTube, but remains elsewhere.)
It’s, well … hm. Watch it for yourself before it’s gone.
The Spirit, directed by Frank Miller, opens on Christmas.

I would complain about this, but Peter David would come along and scold me.

Wow he really, really, likes women, doesn’t he?
And I know I’m not a Spirit scholar or anything, but haven’t they never shown the Octopus’ face? Much less him in a Nazi uniform?
I’m still trying to reserve judgment, but man, he’s going to take a drubbing over this one.

While a lot of films can be stylistic (see WANTED), this one keeps saying “LOOK AT ME! DON’T LOOK AT THE SPIRIT! I’M A FLASHY DIRECTOR!” And if Frank Miller thinks The Spirit was all about the women, he doesn’t get it. I mean, including every major female character from the dozen years of the original series in one movie? This is like a parody of silly movie trailers, but I think he’s serious.

That looks awful with a capital Y.
Yikes.

This movie will make $25, no…$30 the 1st weekend it’s out. ($25-30 dollars, that is). Just kidding. But seriously though, I don’t “think” it’s going to do very well. It will NOT outperformed the latest Hellboy movie, watch and see. The SPIRIT just isn’t “that” popular and well known. I think more people have heard about The Green Hornet and Kato, than they have The SPIRIT and the aformentioned character still hasn’t had a movie made of his adventures yet. Anyhow…good Luck on Sin City 2, oops, I mean…The Spirit. I hope it does well…if only to keep Hollywood interested in comic book movie adaptations.

Hey, at least P’Gell escaped this one.
…so far…

I can’t say I’m surprised to see that this looks, well, not-so-good (considering how bad the teaser was and the fact that Frank Miller seems to have completely lost the plot about 10 years ago), but I am surprised to see that this looks to have leap-frogged past “crap” and into “crap that is so crappy it may be entertaining.” Reminds me of Xanadu. Or the opening credits sequence to the Buck Rogers movie that kick-started the TV series in the 80s. That may not be what Frank was shooting for, but it’s probably the best he’s going to get.

Reserving judgment until the finished product arrives, realizing I won’t be seeing my take on the Spirit — all the way back to those Harvey Comics reprints from the 60s.
I felt better with Sin City as Frank Miller had the help and direction of Robert Rodriguez. Without him… I’m not so sure.

Will Eisner is rolling in his grave.
I know he liked Frank Miller, but Miller’s just gone and sodomized the whole idea, feeling and (no pun intended) spirit of the comic so that he can do his own thing.
It’s more a Frank Miller vanity project than any kind of ode to the character.

I actually like how this film looks and am interested in seeing it. However, let it be disclosed that I’ve NEVER actually read a Spirit comic before and what I’ve seen of the character and series does not match the film’s tone and look at all so I understand where everyone is coming from.

I am just so relieved he didn’t attempt to “update” Ebony White.
