Martin Wagner returns to Hepcats (for reals)

July 14th, 2008
Author Chris Mautner

Remember Hepcats, one of those titles that, along with Cerebus and Bone, were seen as the self-publishing stalwarts of the early 1990s? Creator Martin Wagner has laid low for a long while, but he’s back now and apparently attempting to complete his long-uncompleted saga involving people with animal heads. He’s got the first two pages of a projected eight-page minicomic up on Flickr right now, with hopefully more to follow soon:

This is only the start of the story, which is set in 2006, and contains no Snowblind spoilers, for those of you waiting for a resolution to that story. It is still forthcoming, but I find I need to do some simpler work like this first, before trying to throw myself back into a complex and lengthy graphic novel plotline that I sadly abandoned ten years ago and really haven’t thought about since.

I credit the ongoing love and support of Hepcats fans on the Yahoo Group for the existence of this. You guys and girls did the frickin’ impossible. You got me started on a new Hepcats story after ten years, a decade during which I had decided full stop that I was done with comics for good and all.

You know what would be even better? If he paid back all those people who subscribed to Hepcats for issues that never materialized way back when…

Anyone remember how he was going to relaunch the series with Antarctic, and after issue #12 was reprinted Antarctic wound up asking on usenet if anyone knew where the hell Wagner was? Good times, good times…

after switching rooms with my foster son so he could have the computer out of my office and in his bedroom, i rearranged the bookshelves of my office and peeped the snowblind graphic novel and put it in my ‘to read’ pile. nice to see martin is gonna bring the magic back. i know he’s let a lot of people down in the past but redemption is redemption, you know. i’m sure he feels as guilty as anyone reasonably would. proof is in the pudding though and we’ll see what he does…

martin did help me understand a lot about comics and the biz and was very helpful to me in my ol’ college days of trying to figure it all out!
