Among the bevy of animated projects Marvel pushed last month at the Licensing International Expo apparently was this one: two direct-to-DVD short movies called Hulk Vs. Thor and Hulk Vs. Wolverine.
Although the titles are self-explanatory, the press release from Marvel and Lionsgate provide a few details:
Hulk Vs. Thor – It’s gods versus monsters in this epic 45 minute movie! Never have we explored the explosive power of the Hulk like we have in this new film, every major character from the Marvel Thor universe is thrust into battle with this Green Goliath as he brings a new Ragnarok down upon the realm of gods.
Hulk Vs. Wolverine - This dark, violent, smash and slash story was first told in issue 181 of THE INCREDIBLE HULK and the rematches have continued to thrill comic fans ever since. Now Marvel and Lionsgate takes the best of those famous comic book battles and merges them into one heart pounding 33-minute story.
I’m guessing “slash story” doesn’t hold the same meaning to Marvel and Lionsgate that it does to most everyone else …
Although the two features won’t be released until January, they’ll receive their world premiere at Comic-Con International on July 24.

why does marvel even bother trying? This will be terrible like ALL of their cartoon projects and MOST of their comic books. They should just go out of business, their stuff SUCKS. DC is far better at everything.
July 8th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
The slash story comment would be funnier with out having the smash part before it. “Smash and Slash” Story is different than just slash story…
Good try though!
July 8th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Oh boy, Marvel reaching for more retarded readership.
July 8th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Just to note, these two Hulk Vs. shorts will be included on the same DVD/Blu-Ray release.
July 8th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
holy awesome.
July 8th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
ZOMG! THIS IS THE COOLEST THING EVER!
July 8th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
I’m incredibly tired of all things Wolverine….
July 8th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Whoo boy 33 minutes!! Can’t wait to see the 24.95 price tag on tha one. Sure do hope it comes with a kick in the groin as a warning to let me know not to but it at best buy but to get it from the booleg guy in my area at 5 4 20.
enough with wolverine already.
July 8th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Why not PUNISHER vs. Wolverine??
July 8th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
I HATE wolverine. and hulk is hardly interesting. I like thor. but i mean why bother buying it if Cartoon Network will show it eventually and even then i will probably flip the chanells
July 8th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
The voice acting for Wolverine sounds pretty awful. And cliched.
July 8th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Well Justin and AMS, you are gonna need to live in a desert without internet the next year, with the new Wolverine movie I’m expecting at least a dozen of minis and one-shots, and don’t forget (I’m guessing) special Wolverine covers, ala zombies, skrulls and monkeys covers, so we are gonna have Capverine, Ironverine, Hulkverine, Thorverine and so on. Ah, what a wonderful world. Peace.
July 8th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Hey guys? You must’ve not gotten the memo’s. The current line for the ‘holier than thou’ snooty comic book geeks is ‘Enough with the Iron Man’ and ‘Hulk sucks, epic fail Marvel LOLOLOL’.
I mean honestly, if you guys can’t keep up with the fads of snooty comic book message boarding, why do you even bother? You should just all go out of the commenting business already.
July 8th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
The slash story comment would be funnier with out having the smash part before it. “Smash and Slash” Story is different than just slash story…
It needed to be hyphenated — “smash-and-slash story” — otherwise, you run the risk of it being read as “smash … and slash story.”
July 8th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Well, it probably will be overpriced like AMS said, but that’s what Netflix is for. I’ll watch it. I like big brawls in comics, so translating big comic brawls to DTV movies sounds good to me.
The only problem is that I’m sure Hulk vs. Thor is going to wind up with Thor looking like an absolute moron, just like he does in 90% of the Hulk/Thor comic fights. That’s a crappy way to introduce a lot of mainstream viewers to Thor–”hey, isn’t that the god dude that got his ass kicked by the Hulk?”
July 8th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Irradiated science nerd vs. Thor AND all the gods of Asgard?! How lame. That should last about 10 seconds before he is tossed off the rainbow bridge. Why even call them gods?
Thor should be beating him alone with centuries of fighting experience against giants, trolls, dark elfs, etc. Not to mention vast amounts of powers that invlolve more than a punch in the face.
July 8th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
”why does marvel even bother trying? ”
Because their selling alot?
Anyway, This looks cool so i’ll probably pick it up.
July 8th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Once again, why isn’t “The Hulk” instead of “Hulk?” And yes, it does look that crappy, too.
July 8th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Ugh. Oddly, while DC’s animated properties have been almost uniformly high quality and their movies are suffering outside of Batman, Marvel’s movies are better than ever and their animated offerings have been mostly awful except for the recent Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon. Unfortunately, this looks to be as bad as the other Marvel direct-to-DVD dreck like Ultimate Avengers.
July 8th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Is it just my computer, or is the animation really jerky? I sure hope it’s a lot smoother when it’s released.
July 8th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Can say i honestly don’t care about a versus animated DVD, will probably watch it on netflix. What’s up with the “planet Hulk” they’ve been talking about, hopefully they do that right.
July 8th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
looks like they’re trying to get a mcguinness style.. not very well, but hey!
July 8th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
jesus a lot of trolls on here…
This looks awesome, I wish Marvel would go back to the brown costume, but screw it.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Uhhh…maybe this isn’t being produced for grown men?
My buddy’s son is under 10 and he loves this stuff — all the DC and Marvel animated movies. So cool off, let the kids have some fun, too.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
I think it looks great
I gotta stop reading these online comments though. People are so jaded nowadays. I would’ve killed to get this much movies and animated features when I was a kid.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
“The voice acting for Wolverine sounds pretty awful. And cliched.”
That is Steven Jay Blume, isn’t it? Those are two adjectives I’ve never heard used to describe his voice acting. To each his own, though, I guess.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
I was thinking the exact thing for my son, until Wolverine said “What the hell?”, which means he won’t be watching it. It’s a shame that unnecessary profanity has to be included in these movies to make them seem more “hip” or “cool.” The only thing it accomplishes is alienating that target audience.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Sorry Chris, but I disagree.
First off, you’re right in that ‘hell’ isn’t something I’m used to hearing from a cartoon. But of all the swear words out there, it’s pretty minor. I heard it from Bob Hope on TV when I was a kid, 25 years ago. My parents politely told me not to repeat what Bob Hope said and we all went back to happily watching him entertain the troops.
It’s not about sounding hip or cool. It’s about sounding like a real person. When you see something like the Hulk coming at you, anything less than ‘hell’ is unrealistic. That’s the kind of thing that people say. Actually, that’s probably a cleaned up version of what people say in a situation that bad. So what they’re doing is showing us a real adult person, which has it’s merits when you want people to take a character seriously.
This doesn’t remotely alienate the target audience.
July 8th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
This is pretty awesome. I’m firmly behind Marvel getting back into doing more animated work. The Hulk Vs. Wolverine looks fantastic. I hope the same is true for the Hulk vs. Thor.
BTW, hell is a curse word? Maybe you should realize that two creatures beating the HELL out of one another is the issue, rather than the language. So violence = OK, but “curse words” are not? It’s not like Wolvie is flinging F-bombs.
Don’t you have any faith your child as a thinking being? Couldn’t you, I don’t know, tell him not to say such words whatsoever? BTW, “hell” is probably found in the bible more than it’ll be in this feature.
July 8th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
I don’t mind the “look” of this but the storyline is just plain OBVIOUS, DUMB and UNIMAGINATIVE.
July 9th, 2008 at 12:31 am
Wolverine’s voice sounds like the same voice actor they used for the character in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance game.
July 9th, 2008 at 2:39 am
hmm..Newsarama isn’t what it used to be..
stupid “this sucks” mentality..
Pretty sure those fans are 1/3 of what can and will kill the industry..
July 9th, 2008 at 2:40 am
and on this subject, the videos seem interesting..
I, for one, will check it out..
July 9th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Several people are worried about the price on this. Keep in mind that every other Marvel animated DVD has been sub $10 within a few months at Best Buy.
July 9th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
you hit the nail on the head Ortiz, the trolls that hate Wolverine are gonna be going bonkers at the amount of Wovie material that Marvel will be dishing out next year, in anticipation of the movie.
I, for one, look forward to the Wolverine material AND the trolls self-destructing…
“Hell” is now considered a profanity?!? In the 1950’s maybe…
July 9th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
But here in America, cursing is always worse and always requires more attention than violence.
LoL
July 9th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
I for one can’t wait for this!!
And no it’s not Steve Blum. He’s voicing Wolverine in “Wolverine and the X-Men”. It’s Mark Hamil who’s voicing Wolverine in “Hulk vs Wolverine”. He voices him in the games.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:19 am
As usual with marvel animation, looks bad.Shouldn’t The Hulk crush Wolverine pretty easily?Probabbly as easily as Magneto should,no?
I was thinking the exact thing for my son, until Wolverine said “What the hell?”, which means he won’t be watching it. It’s a shame that unnecessary profanity has to be included in these movies to make them seem more “hip” or “cool.” The only thing it accomplishes is alienating that target audience.
Seriously?I think your over doing it a bit.
July 10th, 2008 at 11:34 am
1) Yes, “hell” is a profanity as far as cartoons go. It simply isn’t used in ordinary, Saturday-morning for-kids cartoon fare. Sure, it’s the mildest of the mild mildness, but its use signifies that that’s not what this is.
2) That’s totally Steve Blum, who voices Wolverine in current video games.
July 11th, 2008 at 5:10 am
Steve Blum does a good job as Wolvie’s voice!
August 10th, 2008 at 2:02 am
I’m a DC Dude and I am really ready to watch these, they do look a little kidish but I love that kind of stuff.
