Sony Online Entertainment’s anticipated DC Universe Online will be a blend of traditional MMO and first-person action console games.
Some of the details are revealed in the current issue of U.K.’s Edge magazine, and summarized by Eurogamer.
While you won’t be able to play Superman or Wonder Woman, you may fight alongside them — or against them — as you create your own superhero or supervillain. Metropolis and Gotham City will be the two large shared environments.
I’m not a gamer, but I found the most interesting tidbit to be this, from Executive Creative Director Jim Lee:
In the future, it’s possible we could see models, environments and costumes from the game turning up in other DC Comics properties, and there are plans for plot crossovers. “We can tie-in future DC tentpole events and translate the stories for the gaming world, and have them occur simultaneously,” said Lee. “The possibilities are numerous and very exciting.”
DC Universe Online is due out sometime next year.

Wow, this game sounds like it could be good. I have City of Heroes so I know that it’s possible for a DCU MMORPG to work. City of Heroes was great, but having well-known proerties will take the game to the next level.

“[Y]ou create your own superhero or supervillain.”
–and–
“In the future, it’s possible we could see models, environments and costumes from the game turning up in other DC Comics properties”
So, does this mean that DC comics owns the character I create in game to do with as they like outside of the game?
If so, I find that thought both trilling and chilling.

Uh… I meant “thrilling,” but you knew that.

I think that they missed the boat on this. The super hero gaming market is not as large as a fantasy gaming market and City of Heroes is a fantastic game. I am unsure as to the appeal of seeing licensed characters in-game. It seems that they would have been or still would be better off making a deal now with NCSoft and just allowing the DC toons to appear in the game and to also allow concurrent happenings in the game and comics.

Great, I thought that it had been canceled.

I’m not much of a gamer, but this sounds fun.
Oh, and I wanna be a Green Lantern.

Or better yet, I’ll just come up with something cooler.
A Tangent Superman or something, maybe…

Okay, I know…
Since Gotham City is one of the main cities, then something Bats related.
And a villain. — so I can kick Batman’s a**.

“So, does this mean that DC comics owns the character I create in game to do with as they like outside of the game?”
To be fair, this is true of any character you create for any MMORPG, superhero or otherwise.

Yep, that certainly is part of the CoH EULA at least. And that’s probably quite a few superhero characters. Not that they’ll ever realistically do anything with them, so I’m not sure what it’s worth exactly.

Mr Wiggles said: “And a villain. — so I can kick Batman’s a**.”
Curb thy tongue, knave! Not that Bats should have to fear someone called “Mr. Wiggles.”
What’s with all the hate for Bats around here, anyhow?

I’m curious how they’ll manage to tie DC events into the game when DC can’t even manage their events in the comics too well lately.
But, cynicism aside, this sounds really cool in theory. I hope Sony’s developers can make it interesting. I tend to shy away from MMOs because I find them incredibly repetitive.

Didn’t City of hero’s beat them to this already? or are they gonnna rip off alot of ideas from that??

This shows more promise than DC vs. Mortal Kombat. And a PC game is must since all the “next-gen” systems have many flaws and are far from perfect. In this day and age, you’re definitely not getting your money’s worth from the video game companies.

Mr. M Says: Didn’t City of hero’s beat them to this already? or are they gonnna rip off alot of ideas from that??
Did you honestly think CoH would be the only MMORPG featuring superheroes?

I was totally addicted to COH for about 2 yrs,my 7 yr old and i (41) would play and she digs superheros as much as i do so i cant wait… I think this will really take off as long as they can have an awsome hero generator like COH.

Marianne Cox Wallor Roberts Raleigh - DC Universe online is being released for the Playstation 3 and PC. A few years ago when this game was first announced, both Marvel and DC were planning a game. Marvel was for PC and console exclusive to the XBox 360. So DC (don’t know if they had a lot of choice since Sony is making the game) made their game exclusive to the PS3.
I’m really looking forward to this game. I can’t wait to fight crime in Gotham City and/or Metropolis.
