Over at ComicMix, Van Jensen reports on yesterday’s “State of the Industry” panel at Heroes Con, which featured Dan DiDio, Erik Larsen, Jimmy Palmiotti, Mark Waid and moderator Tom Spurgeon. It sounds like it was kind of a downer panel:
The DC presence was pretty tense. DiDio stayed pretty gruff throughout the State of the Industry panel and dodged moderator Tom Spurgeon’s questions about the past week at DC, marred by Chuck Dixon’s acrimonious exit.
Not inspiring anyone, at one point DiDio said, “We have the same characters… There’s only so much you can do with them. You’ve seen it all, you’ve heard it all.”
Wow. It’s obviously been a pretty tough week for DC and for DiDio, as rumors and speculation floated around the internet that he might be on his way out. Not to mention John Nee resigning, May’s sales chart and Chuck Dixon not quitting.
I was hoping to hear more about what was discussed at the panel, but neither Newsarama (who is covering the show) nor Comic Book Resources (who so far isn’t) — nor anyone else besides ComicMix, for that matter — seems to have covered it. Heidi at the Beat says she’ll have a report from it later. Maybe she’ll have some more tidbits about what happened and what’s been going on with DC at the con.

I’m not sure I understand what’s “to be covered” at this Convention by the rumorcasters… are we supposed to expect that at a panel about Final Crisis the head of DC is going to somehow break down and cry? When it’s revealed to be just another week on the ranch, with the same ups and downs that every publisher faces, what could just another *Comic Book Convention* reveal? I guess we’ll get to see how many nerds can come up the the EIC of a company and say “Neeerrr - i heard you were a gonner? Is this true? My blog needs content, can you confirm or deny a change in personnel so I can post it first?”

Actually, if you read a little closer, this panel wasn’t about Final Crisis … it was a state of the industry panel featuring three EiCs of comics companies.
Forgetting all the bruhaha around DC this past week, I expected the panel to be covered because you have DiDio, Larsen and Waid in the same room talking about the industry. Surely more was said about the state of comics than what Jensen quoted and that John Byrne is writing Farscape.

Sounded like an interesting panel. It should have been covered.

We’ll have a full report coming Monday, or at the latest, Tuesday. It was a tough panel to summarize and write up given the breadth and scope of the topics that were covered. Schedule during the show just didn’t permit me to a) take notes on it on my computer, and b) find time to move notes on paper on to computer, and into article.

“You’ve seen it all, you’ve heard it all”- then you keep pandering to that audience, instead of seeking out a new one.
Why?

“I’m not sure I understand”
Wow. No kidding.

Oh, just to be clear: I said “no kidding” not because I agree but because I think that first comment is ridiculous and sad. Maybe “no kidding” could be misunderstood to be me agreeing with something that pathetic, though so I feel like I should clarify: I disagree.
