Update (Wednesday night): ShockTillYouDrop.com reports that the photo is a fake.
It’s been a few months since we last saw anything about Warner Bros.’ planned big-screen adaptation of Jonah Hex. But if the above photo from Film School Rejects is to be believed, there may be significant progress on the movie, which is set for release next year.
Although no casting announcements have been made, the website has what appears to be an early test photo of Thomas Jane with Jonah Hex makeup and props. There’s been no confirmation from the studio or Jane’s representatives.
The movie is being adapted by the Crank team of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor.

LOVE Jonah Hex, hope they do the movie justice. I’d prefer a different actor though After seeing Jane in the awful Punisher movie, the guy really can’t act to save his life…

I’d love to see a Jonah Hex movie too, but I think my choice of actor to play Hex:

is better!

Actually, Tom Jane as Hex isn’t a half bad choice…I’m a HUGE fan of the latest incarnation of this book. I can’t wait to see this movie.

The “Crank” team. Oy. Well, at least Jane looks cool as Hex.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:34 am
Would have picked Vigo Mortensen to play Hex.

Crank was the best pure action movie in years, so I’m sure this will at least be watchable and clever.

Thomas Jane has already failed as a comic book character on the big screen. I like idea of “Sawyer Hex”, though.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
The movie failed. Jane’s performance was pretty much the only thing in it that worked.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
I couldn’t be happier if they picked Thomas Jane. he is a fantastic actor.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Jane is a good actor. The problem is when are filmakers going to stop casting Jane in tough guys roles? He barely passed the exam with Punisher trying to act tough. With guys like Punisher and Jonah Hex you need a young Clint Eastwood: somebody who IS tough as a opposed to a good actor like Jane that ACTS tough.

Thomas Jane can act. If you can’t see it in The Punisher then check out Deep Blue Sea.
June 18th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
I really love Thomas Jane. I’d be super happy to see him in a J. Hex movie.
June 18th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
He was awesome in “Homeless Dad.”
June 18th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Thomas Jane is the man! If given the chance he’s a fantastic actor, and if you’ve heard/seen/read any of his interviews he’s very passionate about the comics industry.

in response to “if you cant see it in punisher watch deep blue sea”….seriously? deepest the bluest my hat is like a sharks fin deep blue sea? LL cool j with parrot deep blue sea”…that movie was trash…punisher was better but still not good…i agree with the guy who says you need a young clint eastwood to play these characters…hes decent…but saying anything good about deep blue sea is ridiculous

Thomas Jane will be perfect for this. He is a great actor.

He was awesome in “Homeless Dad.”
Thanks for making me laugh out loud, fellow Arrested Development fan. Hilarious.
Oh, and I cast another pro-Thomas Jane vote.

Why is Thomas Jane a casting option for seemingly every comic book movie now?
I always pictured Hex as being bigger and tougher-looking. The guy who plays Sawyer on Lost is too “pretty” but he has the right muscular build/size.
June 18th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
While it wasn’t perfect, I liked Janes’ Punisher. I think he definitely proved he can act in 61* and The Mist. I really wish that was a real promo pic. Not only do I love westerns, I think Jonah Hex is one of the best non-superhero characters ever created for comics.

Jane can act. But he failed on Punisher because he didn’t look intimidating enough. People are as easy to jump on something and being too negative as they are easy at being too positive without thinking like school kids. “cool the guy was Punisher he would be a good fit for Jonah Hex!”. Jane looks like a damn surfer. I agree with the other poster who said that Josh Holloway from Lost being a good choice for this. Other great candidate would be Ray Stevenson who’s big and badass in “Rome”(who happens to be the new Punisher) and the big European guy that was in the 13th Warrior.

I liked Jane as the Punisher. I think he’d make a good Hex.
However, my pick for Jonah Hex is the same as it’s been since JLU: Adam Baldwin.
“Plan? We put ‘em in the ground, that’s the plan.”

HHHHmmmmm……
I think Jane can do it…..But I love the idea of Josh Holloway playing him though.

I have been a fan of Jonah Hex since the seventies and absolutely adore the new series. It has to be one of the best DC comics on the shelves right now, despite what the sales may reflect. As for the movie, everyone knows that we need a young (not too young like Brandon whatever in Superman) Clint Eastwood to play the part, but I cannot think of any famous actor that fits that bill.
Like so many other comic movies, this one would do well to pick an unknown that best suits the role instead of shoe-horning (new verb) a celebrity into the part in the hopes of selling a few more tickets on brand-name alone.
As for Thomas Jane, that guy delevers some of the most wooden performances I have ever seen. There is way too much fan-boy worship with him (like people who accept the crappy Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Ghost Rider and Elektra films just because they have their favourite characters in them, despite being terrible movies). I mean TJ is right up there with Nick Cage when it comes to laughable tough guys.
I agree with the previous poster who said we need someone in both the Jonah role as well as the Punisher role who IS tough, as opposed to someone who tries (too hard) to act tough. Too many fans and casting directors mistake macho with tough. Big difference. Just like confidence and bravado. They are not the same. One is subtle while the other is forced.
All that being said, if you HAVE to have a celebrity for comfort or branding, Micky Rourke is probably the best choice I can think of for the Punisher and possibly even Jonah.

I posted this on the boards, but I can’t help but see someone older and grizzled in this role. I’d take Kurt Russell in a heartbeat, Clancy Brown or even old Lance Henriksen if he’s still got life left in him and can bring some fire to the screen. I just can’t picture any young actors today being bad@$$ enough to pull off Hex. They’re all too pretty, too thin, too metrosexual. I’m not too disheartened by Jane, though, because I know he’ll give it his all if cast. The guy may not be perfect, but he cares about his projects.
June 19th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
This would be perfection. His Punisher wasn’t bad, people just hate story… I think he’s the perfect Jonah Hex.
