These are the things I bought at MoCCA

MoCCA comics, part 1

Not an attempt to brag, but merely to point out some good comics — here’s a quick rundown of what I bought at MoCCA this year.

Before I get to that, Jog pointed out and I forgot to mention in my previous MoCCA post that NBM easily won the “holy crow/fall line-up” award. The highlight is easily Nocturnal Conspiracies by David B., his first book for Futuropolis after parting company with L’Association, the company he co-founded.

But that’s not all! NBM will also be releasing a collection of Happy Hooligan strips in their “Forever Nuts” line (with Sundays in full color!). Plus, there’s another Dungeon collection, Why I Killed Peter by Alfred and Olivier Ka, a story of sexual abuse that Bart Beaty praised, and Miss Don’t Touch Me (scroll down) by Hubert & Kerascoet, which looks to be a sexy Nancy Drew-type mystery with Sfar-ish overtones.

Now then, from left to right:

The Asshole by Gary Panter. A very cool Panter mini. I also picked up a copy of Cola Madness, which I’ve been hankering for awhile now.

Murder by Sean T. Collins. Nice mini of creepy horror tales with a variety of artists handling the drawings.

Is It Bacon? by Matt Wiegle. My daughter thought this book was really funny. So did I.

The Most Horrible Thing in the World by Dylan Graham. This one’s a wee bit precious, but I liked Graham’s minimalist art style and they way he lays out his two-page spreads in an almost diagramatic (is that a word?) fashion.

Boy’s Club by Matt Furie. Anthropomorphic critters act like college frat boys. Hallucinatory events occur. Odd, disturbing and delightful.

Ransom Strange: Voodoo Economics by Tom Kaczynski. Always gotta pick up the latest Kaczynski.

The Fart Party by Julia Wertz. I had heard a number of good things about this book and wanted to see for myself what all the fuss was about.

MoCCA comics, part 2

From left:

Injury Comics #2 by Ted May and others. All Nazareth fans need to pick up this comic immediately.

Reich #3 & 4 by Elijah Brubaker. I’ve gone on about this series at length in the CWFW column. Suffice it to say it’s very good biography of psychiatrist Wilhelm Reich. Issue three came out through Diamond just this week so see if you can hunt down a copy.

Habitual Entertainment #4 by Will Dinski. An amusing story involving plastic surgery that manages to avoid trite moralizing via a clever sci-fi twist 2/3rds through and a very good final punchline.

Incanto by Frank Santoro. Some gorgeous images in this one.

Dorado Park by Lilli Carre. This might be my favorite mini of the show. Carre’s really becoming a fantastic artist in a very short time period.

MoCCA comics, part 3

I spent an embarrassingly amount of money at the PictureBox table, but managed to pick up a number of neat new books/stuff I’ve had my eye on for awhile, including, clockwise from top left: the first volume of Laura Weinstein’s Goddess of War; that Michel Gondry comic (sadly he wasn’t at the booth when I was there); the Core of Caligula mini by CF; the first two issues of 1-800-MICE by Matthew Thurber; Tales From Greenfuzz #2 by Will Sweeney; a new, X-rated mini by Thurber; and the deluxe edition of Storeyville by Santoro (my original newsprint copy is starting to fall apart).

MoCCA comics, part 4

I also got (again, clockwise from top left): SnooPee, a juvenile, surreal newspaper comic by Ken Kagami involving Charlie Brown and Snoopy in a series of increasingly bizarre sexual and scatalogical positions; the Center for Cartoon Studies’ Sundays 2 anthology; The Hero’s Life and Death Triumphant by Frederic Coche, a joint publishing venture between Fremok and Bries; Neverland, Dave Kiersh’s take on the Peter Pan story; two new books from SparkPlug press that I’m anxious to read — Trevor Alixopulos‘ new book, The Hot Breath of War, and InkWeed, a collection of short stories by Chris Wright; CCC7, the latest anthology from the Closed Caption Comics folks; and, finally, Angst Vol. 2 and No Comprendo Comics, both picked up from the famed “Scandinavian table” on the seventh floor.

Whew! That took a while to get through. Hopefully there might be something in that pile that stirs your own interest. If so, click on a link and check it out.

    SnooPee?

Man, I wish I would have seen IS IT BACON? there. That should have been added to my list.

I blogged my list at my new blog, Chris. It seems like we have exactly zero overlap, and that’s awesome–not that your taste is shitty or anything, just that there’s so much awesome shit at MoCCA because, well, it’s not a WizardWorld show.
