J.J. Abrams’ highly anticipated sci-fi drama Fringe will debut in comic books before it hits television this fall.

USA Today’s David Colton reports in this brief item that DC Comics will release a prequel on Aug. 27, two weeks before the show’s Sept. 9 two-hour premiere on Fox.

Considering that August’s titles already have been solicited, it’s unclear how the comic will be distributed. Perhaps the book is destined for newsstands and checkout counters, right next to TV Guide. According to the article, the creative team hasn’t been decided.

Fringe is created by Abrams (Alias, Lost, Star Trek) and Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Alias, Transformers, Star Trek). It centers on an FBI agent (Anna Torv) who teams with a man (Joshua Jackson) and his scientist father (John Noble) to confront the spread of paranormal phenomena.

Hopefully more details on the comic will emerge later today.

It MIGHT be interesting, but I’m more inclined to actually see the show first.

If anyone from DC, or any other comic company, is reading this I still think there should be a graphic novel to help fill in the blanks for another Abrams creation… A little something called LOST.

With seven months to go until another episode is shown, a really nice graphic novel that fills in some of the gaps or some additional character backgrounds that they haven’t had time for on the show would be great. Not unlike last year’s “Missing Pieces” webisodes or the online games/added content they’ve done in the past (and are doing again this year, apparently).

Probably way too late to do one for this year’s hiatus, but I’m surprised about this. With all of the comic book references on the show, not to mention having people like Brian K. Vaughan, Paul Dini and Jeph Loeb all having been involved with the show, it seems like a no-brainer. Not to mention a great way to quench fans thirsts during the long breaks.
