Hulk smash cigar butts?

June 12th, 2008
Author Kevin Melrose

If The Hulk thought Abomination was tough, how will he handle 27,000 anti-smoking advocates?

In a press release issued yesterday, the American Medical Association Alliance — the volunteer arm of the AMA — took Universal Pictures to task for the depiction of a cigar-chomping Gen. Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (William Hurt) in The Incredible Hulk.

“Shame on The Incredible Hulk for unnecessarily adding smoking to a sequel that would have been just as exciting and believable without it,” alliance president Dianne Fenyk says in the statement. “Universal Studios and the other Hollywood studios should be especially embarrassed for using comic book movies, which they market to children and know youth will want to see, to promote tobacco.”

The release points out that the Gen. Ross in Ang Lee’s 2003 film didn’t smoke. The group also cites the elimination of smoking from Marvel comics by Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada after his father died from smoking-related lung disease.

The AMA Alliance is encouraging its members to spread the word about the smoking in The Incredible Hulk, and to pressure Motion Picture Association of America and Universal to remove smoking from youth-rated films.

The Incredible Hulk, which opens Friday, is rated PG-13.

    whatta buncha maroons

  2. Steve Says:

Because, you know, all the kids want to be just like Thunderbolt Ross.

I actually noticed that one of the recent trailers had a warning label that the film contained scenes of tobacco consumption, along with the usual credits and MPAA stuff.

  3. Beheader Says:

Did they complain about a trilogy of Wolverine smoking a cigar?

  4. Rick Rottman Says:

No mention of Gamma Ray abuse. That causes cancer too.

  5. Froggie Says:

Dear God. Like kids are gonna wanna be like the VILLAIN in a superhero movie. I hate people that flip their sh!t over stuff like this. Get a life. This is almost as bad as Iran getting pissed off about the Persians in 300 or the Russian PO’ed about Indy.

  6. Sam Robards Says:

Wow, talk about idiotic. I don’t smoke and never will, but smoking tobacco is still a legal activity. Watch them take stogies outta the Wolvie solo movie due to this. People are so stupid most of the time…

  7. CitC Says:

The fact that the heroes don’t do the smoking is how Jeff Smith convinced Scholastic to keep the cigars in BONE (If I remember correctly).

Uncool villian smoking shouldn’t be a prob. Super-cool slick viillian smoking = more of a problem.

  8. james ford Says:

remember when the first X-MEN trailer appeared and cyclops optic blasts were replaced with a red flash because they didn’t want to have children imitate it… with their own MUTANT OPTIC BLASTS.

what’s hysterical to me is kids will want to imitate a sixty year old villain smoking but there are a hundred soldiers with guns and they somehow find that less threatening.

  9. Andrew Wickliffe Says:

Well, at least they liked the movie.

  10. shreder75 Says:

    this is a joke, right?

Rising gas prices, world terrorism constantly looming, a war in the middle east, unemployment, the housing market in the dumper, etc etc..and THIS is what these people put their time and energy into?

Ya know, the world would probably be a much more productive place if people like this would focus their time on something more worth while…

  11. Dallas Bar Says:

Tobacco beats a gun anyday, word

  12. JW Says:

Well because Thunderbolt Ross smokes cigars I will too.

  13. FFEJ Says:

I’m glad the AMA has such time to attack a fictional character in a movie about smoking a cigar. Yes, with all the health problems facing Americans like heart disease, bad diet, obesity, diabetes, bad tomatoes, preventable cancer, inproper safe sex, and so on. They still have time to point out something total pointless to most people. Cause when I go to the movies and I see an actor smoking on the screen it really bothers me. I’m just like, “man I wish he wasn’t smoking. What about all the second hand smoke the actors around him have to breathe in? Doesn’t he realize how stinky that is? Doesn’t he care about his health and impressionable moronic kids? Why? Ohhh God why?” And then my entire movie experience is ruined all because some guy on the screen is smoking.

Don’t even get me started when I see someone taking a drink of alcohol. I mean Tony Stark was blatantly supporting Alcoholism. Think of the children, because they don’t have minds of their own. And out of sight/ out of mind always work. Right?? I mean if we don’t expose them to the bad things in the world than they will never attempt them. Right?? We should also have the news stop reporting on things like crime and violence. I like this cause, I like this Flag, Sign me up to another pointless whine feast.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

  14. Tyler Says:

sigh. It saddens me when public institutions waste their time complaining about movies. Any kid who starts smoking cigars after seeing Gen. Ross smoking them was going to anyway, without the movie’s help. Also, I don’t see a lot of kids smoking them correctly, so after getting sick, the one will probably be end of their cigar habit.

  15. kyle Says:

This is all a conspiracy created by DC to tarnish the new Hulk movie.

  16. DGO Says:

    Dear World;

    GROW A PAIR!

    Thank You,
    the tenants

  17. kyle Says:

Seriously, I for one feel that there are much larger issues in the world of “reality” that we should be working to change, than wasting time and energy complaining about what “fictional” characters are doing on the movie screen.

“I smoke cause Fred Flinston told me it was cool.”

  18. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

    HULK HATE SECOND-HAND SMOKE!

  19. AnalSurprise Says:

I like how they refer to this movie as a sequel, and cite how Ross didn’t smoke in the first film… when this is in fact a reboot, according to everyone who’s seen the movie. Why aren’t they complaining that Spider-Man has organic webs in his 3 most recent movies, but had webshooters in the 70′s live-action and cartoon shows? It would be just as relevant.

  20. Venom Melendez Says:

Funny, no one complained about JJJ smoking in the SPidey films.

  21. Erech Says:

Good for the AMA Alliance, it’s a totally ridiculous character trait in this day and age anyways. Might as well have him wear a monocle too.

I mean, how dare they address a social and health issue like this when we have AIDS or Nuclear Weapons or high gas prices, I mean really.

  22. MikeHuffman Says:

But cigars are awesome and go great with a single-malt Scotch. What’s the problem?

    – Mike

  23. Gordon Says:

Uh, Erech, you do realize that some people actually do still smoke? Cigars, even.

  24. Rev. O.J. Flow Says:

    “…to promote tobacco.”

    Priceless.

  25. Venom Melendez Says:

”Good for the AMA Alliance, it’s a totally ridiculous character trait in this day and age anyways. Might as well have him wear a monocle too. ”

Right, because people don’t smoke cigars these days*sarcasm*

Besides Cigars are legal and if someone likes to smoke then that’s their business.

and yes i belive their are more important stuff then worrying on what a fcitional character is doing.

  26. Erech Says:

Gordon, no, I had no idea. Thanks!

  27. Erech Says:

“and yes i belive their are more important stuff then worrying on what a fcitional character is doing.”

Important stuff like what, posting about it on a blog?

It’s absolutely within their purview to make the statement they did, with (imo) good reason, and it’s not as if anything is essentially going to come of it past this anyways.

Plus, cigar chomping villains are cliched AND stupid, if for that reason alone I’m on their side. Also how dare you.

  28. shreder75 Says:

For what it’s worth, Ross really isn’t a ‘villain’..he’s the hulk’s nemesis sure, but his a misguided soldier who’s old school and is trying to do his job: protect people…

anyway, it’s a waste of the AMA’s time and money to bitch about this…

as someone said, nobody complained about JJJ smoking stogies in the spiderman movies…or wolvering smoking stogies in the x-men movies…or the cast of the Sopranos going through 20 packs an episode when that was on…

  29. Roy Says:

What’s next? Can’t show a character drinking and having sex?

“The world spins mad.” -The Question

  30. civilwar vet Says:

Contains scenes of mild tobacco abuse.

  31. super nintendo chalmers Says:

woah woah woah. I wear a monocule

  32. kyle Says:

“It’s absolutely within their purview to make the statement they did, with (imo) good reason, and it’s not as if anything is essentially going to come of it past this anyways.”

I actually said the same thing when they attempted to ban smoking in bars in the city I live in. “It’s not as if anything is essentially going to come of it….” Guess what? I can no longer smoke in my bar.

  33. Wes Says:

God, I hope General Thunderbolt Ross isn’t any tomatoes in this movie! Tobacco and tomatoes …. that’s a double threat!

  34. Wes Says:

    Whoops forgot a word:

God, I hope General Thunderbolt Ross isn’t eating any tomatoes in this movie! Tobacco and tomatoes …. that’s a double threat!

  35. Kelby Says:

I don’t see the problem with smoking in movies. But they should complain about “second-hand smoke” in movies. Thats the real killer. If a fictional character whats to kill himself thats fine, but that fictional character is out of line when he/she/it pushes that smoke on someone else!!!!!!! I SAY DOWN WITH SECOND HAND SMOKE IN THE MOVIES!!!! DOWN I SAY!!!!

  36. Ray Says:

Yeah, it’s fine to show people drinking alcohol, getting slaughtered, swearing, and engaging in gratuitous sex in Hollywood movies, but the hysterical-health-police are going crazy about someone smoking a cigar. America really has gone downhill, hasn’t it? The secular cult of health is going to kill us. These health organization really lose credibility when they fixate on stuff like this—not to mention when they say that 50,000 American a year die of second-hand smoke. Nonsense, and I’m not a smoker.

  37. mohenjo Says:

Man, this movie really looks lousy. Count me out.

  38. Krishna Says:

My bet is that this “campaign” is a total PR move on the part of the film producers – to build hype.

  39. Mit Says:

You ever watch those “truth” anti smoking commercials and think to your self “Gee I’m not a smoker but I would love to blow a big gray cloud of second hand smoke in to that pretentious yuppie spawns face?”

Yes, unless you’re an idiot living in your mother basement hidden from all media you know smoking is bad for you, and if seeing a character in a comic book, T.V show, or movie smoking makes you want to light up maybe there is a deeper issue and possibly you need to be thinned from the heard if that is the case let me know first one is on me.

I too have had family die of cancer I know the pane watching some one you love suffer in such a way can cause. But the Idea that removing all images associated with tobacco is going to fix the problem is stupid.

And the true fact of the matter is most people who file complaints like this or protest are just sitting around looking for excuses to get up on there soap box and feel heroic and important, like I’m doing now.

Also I make no apologize for spelling and grammar.

  40. tank Says:

An attractive older man in a military uniform, smoking a cigar?

    Uh, yes, please.

  41. kgb33 Says:

after reading that i really need to relax. i know what!! i’ll smoke some tobaccy!!

  42. AMA converted Smoker Says:

    Last I checked, this wasn’t a G-Rated movie.

I loved the movie & Ross smoking is an afterthought of what was an awesome movie.

But thanks to AMA bringing this to my attention, somehow I have the urge to smoke now. Thanks, AMA. Now, I blame YOU! >:0

if you are annoyed & appalled by this.
Her e-mail is in the Press Release.

Their first mistake is being uninformed about the movie & calling it a sequel is ignorant.

I sincerely doubt any kids will be positively influenced by anything General Ross does in the movie. It’s the responsibility of the Parents to not let an underage kid see this movie without proper explanation anyways. The movie is PG-13 afterall.

I would think a well intended organization could find better ways to fight the spread of smoking then to attack this movie which will be better rememebered for the action & emotion of the heroic characters, especially a strong female character in Liv Tyler to the conflicted Ed Norton, rather than the forgettable smoking scenes. I think they went a bit overboard in their attempts to curtail something as bad as smoking.

My impressions after reading both this article and the press release was the AMA Alliance is trying to draw attention to their cause at the expense of the reputation of the film. For that reason alone, that is disappointing. For the movie to be scrutinized for that is a cheap shot to further their cause. Their organization looks petty & low class in my eyes.

These people dont care if its legal or not. they want to force their views on people and someday will do so by force. Activist groups such as theses eventually turn their politics and activism into fascism. Todays leftist activists have a lot in common with the fascist of the early 20th century. One example, Adolf Hilter was a rebid anti-tabaco activist and animal rights activist. Read Jonah Goldbergs book. Liberal Fascism.

Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this site. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard to get that “perfect balance” between superb usability and visual appeal. I must say you have done a superb job with this. Also, the blog loads extremely fast for me on Internet explorer. Outstanding Blog!
