Spectacular Spider-Man gets a shot of Venom

I stopped watching after the second or third episode, but apparently the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon featured the young Peter Parker bonding with the symbiote suit a couple of episodes ago. And you know what that means …

Yeah… It took me just a couple of episodes (well, three since they aired two on the first day). Too much of a kiddie show for me. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just not for me. But then, even my nine year-old got bored with it in a hurry too so she quit watching also.

I think I spoiled her on the good stuff like Batman: TAS (which she watches in the morning before school on Toon Disney), Justice League, and Avatar.

Anyhow, I’ve never really warmed to Venom. Not in the comics, and certainly not in a certain lousy movie last summer. Cheesy and outdated as it may be, I’ll take the 60′s animated Spidey over all the others. I wish someone (Boomarang, you listening?) would air those… Especially the trippy later episodes. :-)

Actually, a few years ago, ABC Family and Toon Disney aired the 60′s Spider-Man in addition to the two 80s series and the two 90s versions.

I’m going to be honest, but if you actually looked at more than three episodes, you’ll see that The Spectacular Spider-Man is possibly the best media interpretation of the mythos . . . ever. No limited-designed costumes, no Amazing Friends, no wooden-acting, no lack of the other core characters from the comics, no overrendered CGI backgrounds, no futuristic costume ala Batman Beyond, and no overrendered 3D cel-shaded characters with snarky MTV dialogue.

The designs could be a turnoff for some, but I think Sean and the others are doing a damned good job in creating a fluid environment. The continuity is tight, which is more than I can say for the comic equivalent. Events that occur in one episode still have resonance in another, and without endless flashbacks, as was the case in the early 90s series.

Nothing is even as it appears either. The revelation of the identity of the Green Goblin shocked a lot of folks, including the viewers. Nobody expected him so soon. By the way, there hasn’t been a better version of the Green Goblin ever. Even Spider-Man was impressed by his skills.

Nobody really likes Venom. Myself included. But the black costume storyline (well, three episodes so far) is impressing me, especially the fight Spider-Man had with the Sinister Six last weekend which the alien took control of Spider-Man without him even knowing. We all know what’s going to happen, but still, it’s a fun series that deserves a look after the first three episodes.

Yeah, I have to agree with the second comment. For the longest time I had 4 or 5 episodes saved up. And kept almost dreading watching them. I wanted to, but nothing set my world on fire yet. Then I sat down, and watched them one after the other.

I was sooo wrong, this is a great series. I hesitate to say the best animated series. But if it keeps going this way, it could very easily be. I certainly plan on getting it on DVD.

It was a slow, slightly clunky build up. But it is so wonderful now, my whole family sits down to watch it Saturdays and hates having to wait another week.
