Behind the scenes: 2003’s Beware the Creeper

"Beware the Creeper" cover sketches, by Cliff Chiang

At his Standard Attrition forum, artist Cliff Chiang shares the evolution of some of the covers from Beware the Creeper, the 2003 Vertigo miniseries set in 1920s Paris and starring a female Creeper.

“I’d love to revisit this material, especially since we talked through a sequel that involved Maddy’s son as the new Creeper, and the French Resistance,” Chiang writes. “And I had plenty of ideas for similar revamps in the same world and time period — Blue Devil as a jazz musician in Paris in the 30’s, The Demon as a Grand Prix race car driver. Vertigo Elseworlds, if you will. Admittedly, they do little to expand the line creatively but they’d be a lot of fun. Au revoir, Creeper.”

I liked this series when it came out but wasn’t crazy about the actual storyline.
