Madman‘s religion never really crossed my mind until I saw this post by Ken Jennings. The Jeopardy! champ points out several references in the book to the Mormon religion, stretching back to the book’s early days all the way to the most current series from Image:
Take note, LDS folks and/or comics fans: Madman is apparently Mormon as well. Even back in the ’90s, Madman was being stalked by “the Three Nephites,” which Mormons will recognize as a reference to Book of Mormon-related folk myth. More recently, his archenemy Monstadt tried to corrupt him by paraphrasing dialogue spoken by the Satan character in the LDS temple ceremony. Madman sang the oddball Mormon hymn “If You Could Hie to Kolob” to himself after being blasted into outer space. And in the March issue, Madman even (spoilers!) got married, kneeling at an altar across from his bride, while an alien performed the ceremony. This may be an unusual way for most Earthlings to marry, but it does closely resemble the “sealing” ceremony used to perform marriages in Mormon temples. Um, minus the aliens.
He also points out that Ultimate Cypher is also a Latter-Day Saint … and is based on Ken Jennings.

Well, Mike Allred is Mormon, so… not so weird?

Allred even did The Golden Plates, a comic book adaptation of The Book of Mormon…so yeah, not a huge surprise that Madman has bits of Mormon culture in it.
However, as a Mormon, it was interesting for me to see how Allred has incorporated some aspects of Mormon culture into the Madman comic book (I haven’t read any of this recent relaunch of the series).

Having no knowledge of Mormon tradition at all, I did pick up on a strong religious underpinning when I read the Gargantua book last summer:

Rumor: The Allred’s are opening a series of intense workout centers called…
Golden Pilates.

Yeah, Mike’s Mormon. He’s also awesome and my favorite creator to boot. I think it’s cool for someone to bring part of their faith to their work and good for him. Madman is excellent and it always will be.

I don’t feel as weird about Madman being a mormon than knowing who would Batman and Superman vote for in an election.

That makes my heart tighten in my chest…

Superman, the humanitarian, would vote for Obama.
Batman, the cold, calculating, uncaring p^^^^, would vote for someone just like himself—either of the other two.
