The Minutemen in 1940, from "Watchmen"

AICN has a 1940 photo of the Minutemen — the first superhero team — from Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Watchmen. The Minutemen are, from left: Silhouette, Mothman, Dollar Bill, Nite Owl, Captain Metropolis, The Comedian), Silk Spectre and Hooded Justice.

Watchmen, based on the DC Comics miniseries by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, opens on March 6, 2009.

    … that is awesome.

  2. Deep Shock Says:

Well, THAT is a real comicbook movie!

  3. Edward Himel Says:

Nite Owl has Robin’s tights. This is the 1940s.

  4. Simon DelMonte Says:

Those look about right. Here is a pack of amateurs who look just short of ridiculous. Which is how the Minuteman sadly come off in the story.

  5. David M Says:

I always wondered if there was ever a plan by Moore and Gibbons to have a follow-up story explaining the origin and fate of the Hooded Justice. Without a doubt, he’s the most mysterious guy in the whole Watchmen pantheon and the readers just get teased with his disappearance from the super-hero scene.

  6. josh Says:

these costumes look campy and spot on. great. way better than the batman forever costumes i’ve seen pictures of on the later team.

  7. Chris Says:

I thought it was always implied that The Comedian later tracked down and killed Hooded Justice. Supposedly, he was the former strongman ata circus.

  8. Luke Says:

    That looks really cool!

  9. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

Hooded Justice is a great example of what I’ve heard called a paradiddle detail - a little throwaway comment about a minor character that gives the impression that there’s much more to tell.

The costumes look perfect. They look like they were indeed made by hand. If they have the scene with Captain Metropolis, it’ll work great if his costume has the more hand-made look, and the modern heroes are more streamlined and professional.

  10. Scott Hinze Says:

Righteous. I can’t believe I have faith that a director is going to be able to do this film right. Kudos Synder!!

  11. Derek Ruiz Says:

    Cool.

  12. Eric Says:

Dollar Bill’s cape is too long.

That’s not me being a nitpicking comic book fan. That’s me feeling sad for the guy, having the foreknowledge of his pitiful demise.

  13. Steve Says:

So much moose knuckle and camel toe.

  14. Kolimar Says:

They all look great but Hooded Justice is simply perfect. :D

  15. Roy Says:

Don’t fret, Eric (12). The photo’s awesome. Can’t wait for the film’steaser trailer (with The Dark Knight).

  16. william Says:

hooded justice is not so mysterious, all of the facts are laid out for you, Alan Moore just doesn’t “confirm” it and beat you over the head with it.

  17. william Says:

Hooded Justice & Captain Metropolis were a couple. Sally Jupiter was on HJs arm constantly to give him coverage. You learn as much in the appendix following one of the stories, when Lawrence, I believe- thats the Minutemen’s manager- mentions in passing that the two of them are making a scene. In Sally Jupiter’s interview in the same appendix, she mentions that 2 of the Minutemen were in a Gay relationship and both were gone now.

  18. william Says:

it is also infered that HJ gets sexual gratification from beating up men, and this is his primary motivation for being a masked vigilante. see the reference to someone who was beat up coming forward to the press, and The Comedian’s own suggestion that “this is what gets you hot” to HJ when he is halting The Comedian’s attempted rape. HJ’s cold demeanor and disgusted additude towards Sally in the minutes that follow that would also lend themselves to this knowledge about his character. Look, we just figured out Hooded Justice and his mysterious backstory. Thank you, Alan Moore.

  19. joe asylo Says:

    nice vintages look.
now i m really excited for seen it.

  20. kalorama Says:

Do the Minutemen actually appear in the film as characters, or is the old photo the only visual reference to them? My guess is the latter.

  21. Zeitgeist Says:

This looks like something out of that JLA tc movie

  22. Rich Says:

Kalorama, I’m guessing they have scenes and lines. If you look at IMDB, some of the individuals cast as Minutemen (e.g., Mothman, Dollar Bill) have pretty extensive filmographies. That wouldn’t be necessary to appear in a still photo.

  23. kalorama Says:

I know that the people playing the characters will appear in the film. I meant will they appear in costume in action in scenes set in the 40s? Or will we only see them out of costume in that time period’s live action parts? Because if they’re going to appear in those costumes in action, that’s going to look ludicrous (which, obviously is part of the point, but still).

  24. Evan Says:

Yeah that’s the one thing I’m thinking when I look at this pic is that while extremely accurate and faithful to the comic……

Doesn’t that photo also prove the concept that they can’t do live action superhero movies with them actually wearing costumes? (Batman, Spidey, and Superman accepted?)

  25. pat Says:

i’d totally belive this pic if the guy on the right with the rope around his neck was a little more enthusiastic …

  26. Bing! Bing! Says:

    Sheer perfection.

And, yes, Silhouette is definitely setting off my gaydar. Given the era (1940s) and her choice of looks… Yummy. :)

  27. captainzero Says:

They look “great”. I only wished Alan Moore had more of a story about their team-up adventures.
Compare their costumes to Batman and Robin’s costumes in their early serials of the 1940’s. Right on.!! They look so great I can’t believe they’re doing such a great job with the characters.
I’m looking forward to seeing this movie. I hope they all have a small part.

  28. captainzero Says:

I love these guys!!! Ah…The Silk Spectre maybe a bit more… but ya know what I mean.

  29. Yawn Says:

    Impressive……most impressive.

  30. Panji Sudoyo Says:

After Frank Miller’s 300, i have no doubt regarding Snyder’s ability to adapt a graphic novel into a movie as faithful as possible while being visually entertaining at the same time.
This movie should be great stuff.

  31. Jeremy Says:

that looks like the bad Justice League tv show from a while back
