Runaways

What could be better than Marvel developing a Runaways movie? How about getting Brian K. Vaughan to write it?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, you can add the Runaways to the list of projects Marvel has in the incubation stages. Vaughan, who co-created the book with artist Adrian Alphona, will write the screenplay. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will produce.

No word on when the film will appear, but the article mentions Marvel does have a pretty full slate already lined up through 2011.

Getting Whedon to direct it, too :)

News of a runaways movie is great news. But that bkv will penn the script makes this fantastic news. I hope alphona is employed in a role similar to what gravnov played in iron man. Nice to see marvel put faith behind a smaller newer property that i think has great crossover appeal and would entertain regardless of age.

    There is a God!

  6. Jason Setzer Says:

Wow. I mean W-O-W! BKV doing the script is great. Now, if he we could only get him to come back and write the comic, I’d be in Heaven.

  7. Eric Says:

That would be awesome. His Runaways was prolly my favorite run ever on a comic. And it is just screaming for corss over.

  8. chickrockguitar Says:

    WOW!!!!!!!
THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE NEWS I’VE HAD IN AGES! And BKV to write?! What could be better!
This is SO gonna rock! I can’t wait!

    Simply perfect. :)

  12. Steeley Says:

I was just thinking yesterday how easy this could be made into a film this could be a new generations Goonies (although agazillion times cooler

I’ll start camping outside my local cinema now

  13. Kyle Cowstar Says:

Hopefully the first film adapts the first 18 issues.

Has someone at Marvel been reading my dream journal?

  15. Lex Says:

    Holy freaking cool!

  16. durkadurka Says:

While this is pretty fantastic news, it’s so far away. I hope Runaways keeps its quality that it has always had till then.

  17. Luis C. Says:

This is indeed awesome news. A friend showed me the news last night a little over an hour after it was posted and I was going crazy over it!

With BKV writing it I’m a happy man. We’ll have to wait 4 years (minimum), but it’ll be worth it.

  18. SuperStories Says:

Very good, but I do hope they perhaps will have a suprise or something new twist for those who have read it before. Perhaps change the traitor or another item.

  19. Aerialgreen Says:

Awwww yeeeaah! truth to be told, I geeked out last night when I saw the news and inmediately posted them on the Ramos Runaways article and many more places. This is gonna be the sofa king sweeeeeat.

  20. Aerialgreen Says:

@19 - Agreed, change the traitor for a twist but who? can’t be denied it would hurt fan-wise knowing what happens next to them and how would that change things in the comic, but still 100% agreed!

  21. Safraz Says:

I’d prefer to either see a faithful adaptation or a whole new adventure with the Runaways, myself. I hate it when things are “adapted” for the screen and random elements are changed just ’cause.

  22. InkBlot Says:

Grr, I love Runaways, but I really am nervous about this one. The whole “my parents are evil thing” may come off super cheesy on the big screen.

Also now that I think about it the whole “I cut myself and gain superpowers” thing is just inappropriate.

  23. AirDave817 Says:

Great news! Awesome. I bet it beats both Justice League and Teen Titans to the screen.

    (”No duh”, I know…)

  24. PaxHouse Says:

Much as I’ll hate to admit this…..this is even better news than the rumors about the Cloak & Dagger and Power Pack Movie{s}…..

…And with BKV doing scripts, how could this not be a success…??

  25. spacekicker Says:

so cool! But who here thinks that maybe it would have been a better TV series…seriously

  26. Aerialgreen Says:

@22: yes, it’s inappropriate and would push the movie to a PG-14 or something. So, I can live with a change with that situation, but only if handed maturely, no cheap tricks, dumb FOX 4kids scapegoats or anything that undermines the audience.

  27. gohanwinner Says:

Awesome! BKV writing it is excellent. can’t wait.

  28. joe asylo Says:

yeah is awesome, but common we haven’t heard nothing from the upcoming ex machina movie that supposedly he was writing?

  29. DaVeO Says:

Well, if they adapt the first story arc you can be sure that Cloak & Dagger as well as The Vampire Kid arcs would be cut out. Still, that leaves a pretty hefty story with lots of character moments and action.
And I agree that getting Joss Whedon to direct this would be great.
Now everything else would depend on the casting.

  30. Aerialgreen Says:

The cast will be the hardest part to get, IMO if they want to be successful with this movie, Marvel Studios is ought to get actual ACTOR teenagers and none of the CW losers or Disneylodeon tween pornstars.

  31. irma Says:

holy crap holy crap holy craaaaaaap!!!! SO exciting!!

  32. chris Says:

Wow they acually heard my prayers.

  33. retroqqq Says:

the best comic movie news so far

    after transformers of course

  34. FaxModem Says:

SWEET. This book was begging to be adapted. Maybe Wheedon would get involved too. Man–let’s make this soon before Dakota Fanning gets too old to play Molly.

  35. Komikfan Says:

I like this; Marvel using its newly-won box-office clout to get a wide-variety of its characters in the theaters. With this and Edgar Wright’s planned Ant Man, Marvel is showing a wonderful indie film sensibility which I hope they keep no matter how big their grosses get. And best of all, we know they don’t need to lean on their two oldest properties to make hit movies (so so sorry I just couldn’t resist).

Not a Runaways fan but this is great news. Good luck to all involved!

  36. Niall Says:

Wow, this is an excellent decision by Marvel. Runaways is a perfect property to convert to the big screen. So long as the director listens to BKV, we’re in for a gem. That’s provided they don’t make dodgy casting decisions. Casting Molly will be difficult.

And given the volume of superhero movies that are being released recently, this will be a welcome shift in tone.

Here’s hoping The Hood gets the go ahead as well.

  37. Anthony Says:

Isn’t Whedon busy working on getting his newest show cancelled?

  38. Elixir Says:

I’ve thought about a Runaways movie so many times but I never thought it’d actually get made - this is the best thing I’ve ever heard! It’s perfect for adaption ‘cos it’s not bogged down in years of continuity. I do wonder how they’d fit the first volume into one film…the Cloak and Dagger + Topher parts are sure to be first to go.

  39. Lefty Says:

I just had a major geek out moment- this is great news, Perfect choice of writer!!!

  40. Flüge Says:

Great! Are there any Infos about the status of the production??
