Captain America movie will be set in World War II

Captain America #6

Marvel’s Captain America movie, planned for a May 2011 release, will be a period film, set during World War II.

So says Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who spoke to online journalists yesterday at Universal Studios about The First Avenger: Captain America and other projects.

That would seem to imply the movie will stay at least relatively true to the character’s comic-book origin, and tie directly into the Super-Soldier Serum references in The Incredible Hulk.

On that note, Feige confirmed speculation about a certain object glimpsed in a laboratory scene from Iron Man: Yes, that’s Captain America’s shield.

He also provided a few more details on Thor, saying that it will take place largely in Asgard, mythical home of the Norse gods: “”The film is not all Asgard, but it will be a big chunk in Asgard, yeah.”

Screenwriter Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, The Cell) is expected to submit a draft of the script in a couple of weeks.

  1. Joel Kelly Says:

…I wonder if we should also make anything of the fact that Tony Stark’s dad is specifically mentioned in Iron Man as having been involved in the Manhattan project…could he also have been in on the creation of Cap? That would be another small note to tie the movies together…

  2. Tyler Says:

This is great news for Cap and Marvel fans in general. A great way to sell Cap to the uninitiated and remain true to his origins.

I feel like Marvel Studios has really planned out their franchises and tying everything in to one shared universe is awesome.

Yes, it will be awhile before we get an Avengers movie but with each character having thier background fully explored in individual films, The Avengers movie will be able to focus on The Avengers rather than the individuals.

    Keep it going Marvel!

  3. Brian Davison Says:

A WW II period film is definitely the way to introduce the character to the general masses. And then you can end the film by having Steve frozen in ice and being woken up in 2009 or 2010 by the Avengers.

But for the love of God, keep Matthew McConaughey away from this project!

  4. Simon DelMonte Says:

Good news for Cap and his fans, but when was the last time a WWII film was a success? And ultimately, a Cap film set in WWII should be a war film and not a superhero film.

  5. Rich Says:

    I’m officially excited.

Now to wait for casting news…

  6. Eric Says:

simon…wasn’t ’saving private ryan’ a WWII period piece? if i remember correctly, that was a mild success wasn’t it? and even tho it was pretty universally panned, didn’t ‘Pearl Harbor’ make out pretty good at the box office?

  7. ejulp Says:

See I disagree with this…while I do think launching the solos first is a good idea, and then collecting them into one team, I think Cap would be better served as spinning out of the Avengers.

  8. Tom Says:

Man, it would be so cool if all of these movies are tied together and have shared continuity with the Avengers flick.

  9. ejulp Says:

Give it ww2 Cap a lil screentime ala Ultimates issue 1 v1 in the Avengers movie…all you need, then create interest for more of a back story like Wolverine and Weapon X.

I think ppl need to be coaxed into the idea of a “super hero punching Hitler fighting alongside real troops” type of movie…and, in my opinion, most war movies should really be R, as to not candy coat what happens, real ppl suffer horribly…Brubaker in the Cap comic flashbacks has been pretty good with this. I worry about that in a Cap movie though…how will that pull that one off?

  10. Chris Says:

Good. Any other setting would be just plain wrong.

  11. Rich Says:

Makes me wonder… will we also get Bucky?

  12. mostlyhuman Says:

Is it weird that this news gave a semi?

  13. durkadurka Says:

The main problem i see with this is that when the Avengers movie does eventually come out, a lot of it will have to focus on how Cap deals with today’s world. I think it will take some of the focus off of the other Avengers, especially those that will be debuting in the Avengers movie, like possibly Yellowjacket, the Wasp, Hawkeye, etc.

  14. Kevin Melrose Says:

“Is it weird that this news gave a semi?”

Unless you’re talking about a truck, then, yes. Very.

  15. David M Says:

Release dates according to the article:

    Iron Man 2: April 2010
    Thor: June 2010
    Captain America: May 2011
    Avengers: July 2011

Looks like 2009 will be a quiet year for Marvel’s own productions (although I guess there will be Punisher War Zone in late 2008 and Wolverine in May 2009).

  16. Richard J. Marcej Says:

Let’s see, Cap and Bucky try to prevent the Red Skull from triggering a bomb at the end of the film. Cap and Bucky “die” in the explosion.

After the end credits we see, over 60 years later a frozen body being discovered, and it’s wearing Red, White & Blue garb….

Captain America 2. Cap is alive and has to deal with the 21st Century. He joins Fury and SHIELD as they have to stop the Red Skulls’ Sleepers.

  17. Korvac Says:

Flags of Our Fathers and Sands of Iwo Jima were pretty successful, and those were more recent than Saving Private Ryan…

  18. Shawn Kane Says:

I think the set up for comic fans is great. If they can get the average fan interested the way they did with Iron Man, it would be great.

  19. Shaun Says:

This is good news for sure, and it’s the only proper way to introduce Cap to the big screen. Will he be revived in the Avengers movie, a mere two months later (if the schedule David provided is correct and holds) though?

That seems like overkill, not to mention it could have an adverse effect on the box office for Cap. Maybe. Now that I think about, Iron Man’s been out for less than a month. It’s still holding up really well, but after 2-3 months that movie will be winding down its theatrical run.

It’s either a brilliant move, or a really bad one. And I guess only time will tell. The casting will be crucial, of course, as will the transition of bringing Cap into “our” time.

I look forward to seeing how the movie Cap will react to the nation, and the world, as it is today. If it’s anything like Brubaker’s approach, it could be great stuff. Makes me hope for a second solo Cap movie, perhaps more than an Avengers flick.

  20. tiger47 Says:

I think rather than committing to a single period, they should frame the first film as a Lost-style story, with both a modern and a WWII story building on each other. So much of Cap’s character is his time-lost aspect, and to focus the entire film on his WWII days (which few contemporary readers were around for) is a disservice to one of his more compelling characteristics.

  21. Rob Says:

Clearly Marvel is moving towards making these movies interconnected. I wonder if one day the movie arguments about continuity will be the same as comic ones?

  22. durkadurka Says:

“I look forward to seeing how the movie Cap will react to the nation, and the world, as it is today. If it’s anything like Brubaker’s approach, it could be great stuff. Makes me hope for a second solo Cap movie, perhaps more than an Avengers flick.”

That was my point. I feel that a story around that could be a movie in itself.

  23. Shaun Says:

Oh, and I wouldn’t compare this to the average WW II flick. Besides the fact that some have done really well, as others have mentioned, this is hardly going to be the same kind of film as Private Ryan, or Pearl Harbor.

Think of it more like an Indiana Jones movie. Those are period pieces too, and while none of them were set as WW II movies the Nazis were major players in two of the first three films.

  24. Brion Says:

    Please make Matt Damon Cap!

  25. Safraz Says:

Excellent. I love the WWII stuff for Cap, and it forms so much of the basis for his characterization that they would’ve at least needed to make heavy use of flashbacks if they’d set it in the present. Best to just throw viewers into the war headlong and see what makes Cap Cap.

I hope we get some variant on the Ultimate WWII costume, too. While I hate Ultimate Captain America with a violent passion, Hitch’s design for the WWII costume is far, FAR superior to the original WWII costume.

  26. Dwight L. MacPherson Says:

Okay. This news just made my day.

    -D

  27. Cully Hamner Says:

Actually, neither FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS nor LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA did well at the box office, though both were critically praised. ATONEMENT, however has done very well, and that’s a current release.

In any case, it’s weird, sloppy thinking to me that if there hasn’t been a successful WWII film recently that people just don’t like WWII films. That’s like saying that if people didn’t like BATMAN & ROBIN, then they obviously don’t like Batman films. There’s no absolute taste involved in any genre…

  28. Banman Says:

Sure sounds like Marvel’s taking these films seriously.

I’m one of those who feels the Cap and Thor films could come across goofy if they spend too much time in the modern times without establishing the characters first.

  29. ross Says:

i really hope they get Jensen Ackles from Supernatural as Captain America
I’m not sure of any other actors that would do a good job in the role

  30. Salieri Says:

I think Tony just had the shield so as to test out what a red, white and blue colour scheme Wouk look like on the armour.

  31. artiepants Says:

    …as it should be, woot!!!

  32. Tommy Says:

Tom Selleck was almost Indiana Jones, but was busy with Magnum, P.I. Maybe McConaghey will back out of Cap because he’s busy with the Magnum movie, and we’ll get the next Harrison Ford as Steve Rogers.

So long as Shia isn’t Bucky…

  33. Rev. O.J. Flow Says:

I couldn’t be more excited to see a CAPTAIN AMERICA film, but I hope to God they drop that “First Avenger” part of the title. I think it’s as bad as the “X-Men Origins” thing. Totally unnecessary, I think.

  34. Joe Says:

@33 - I think the First Avenger in the title makes sense from a marketing perspective, because it’ll raise public awareness of the Avengers ‘brand’. Most people (over here in the UK, at least) think of the 60’s TV show when they hear about the Avengers.

  35. Tyler Says:

Reportedly, Matthew McConaghey is NOT being considered by Marvel.

For Cap, it may be better to go with a more or a’unknown’actor (so long as he is good).

Glad to hear that Thor will take place in Asgard.

  36. DGO Says:

My thoughts (as if anyone cares)

Matthew McConaghey as Captain America = BAD!!!

Matthew McConaghey as HAWKEYE = ‘So crazy it just might work’

  37. Sean Says:

“Most people (over here in the UK, at least) think of the 60’s TV show when they hear about the Avengers.”

I’m hoping Sean Connery plays the villain in this movie too.

  38. baxtos Says:

Did anyone else notice the xmen reference in Iron Man? It was quick but in one of the scenes you can deduce that Tony Stark built the blackbird…

  39. Iced Says:

This really, really , really needs Namor and Torch to kickstart properly.
    Here is hoping.

  40. Jack Spicer Says:

Please, no crappy Ultimates uniforms. Keep it iconic — anyone embarrassed by Cap’s look, or classic superhero costumes in general have no business making these movies.

  41. Rich Says:

Baxtos, I think that was just a reference to the SR-71 Blackbird. May have been a gentle nod to the X-Men, their jet is modeled on a modified SR-71 in the first place.

  42. John Says:

I ask in advance for forgiveness for not remembering if it was from Wizard Magazine or here on Newsarama.com, but when there was beginning talks about a Captain America movie, there was mentioning that perhaps Matt Damon would be good for this role, because of those Bourne movies that he did. Does anyone else who replies to this think that Matt Damon is a good choice to play Steve Rogers/Captain America?

  43. greg Says:

    OH MY GOD!

Imagine the first scene in Saving Private Ryan but with cap running around offing Nazis!!!

    SO AWESOME!!!

  44. Ragoth Says:

I can almost see the ending of the movie. Captain America is falling to de ice cold waters of the Atlantic, and after a fede out, we’ll get to read “To be continued on Avengers The Movie”

  45. Trevor Says:

I’d like to see Sgt. Nick Fury (and his Howling Commandos) in WWII. :)

Add to the intrigue, build on the mystery of Fury in each of these Marvel films.

  46. Jeremy Says:

They should put Cap’s movie entirely in WWII and Thor’s movie entirely in Asguard, telling the whole Norse Gods story up to Thor becoming a top notch warrior.

And then in the Avengers’ movie they discover Cap and they discover Thor’s hammer and everything is set to form the group and kick some badguy ass.

  47. Komikfan Says:

I doubt they’ll get Damon; it’s only once in a blue moon that we get casting as perfect as Downey for Stark.

I just have one request: KEEP…ZAK…PENN… AWAY…FROM…THIS…SCRIPT! There are SOOOO many others some of whom have ALREADY written movies for Marvel, who can pull this off much, much better!

  48. Ortiz Says:

The first scene should be like the first pages of Ultimates Vol 1 # 1, or maybe the last scene, anyway, just hope the costume looks good. Can`t wait. Peace.

  49. Max Says:

The main problem with Cap’s appeal to the general public and thus the success of his movie is not so much where and when his story takes place, its how to make that costume of his look cool on the big screen. In comics and to comic fans it’s great and is a classic, but to the general public and especially up on the big screen in real life it kinda looks really dorky. A non comic reading friend of mine once saw a poster on my wall of the Zeck drawn image of Cap fighting Wolverine and proclaimed Cap’s outfit to be the most absurd thing he’d ever seen. This was due mainly to the wings and the swashbuckler boots. So an ultimate style revamp is required for the movie, maybe even going further somehow. The other problem with Cap’s massappeal status is the general antipathy a lot of the world feels for the US and its patriotism obsession. So I don’t know how a hero who embosies these things is going to do at the box office.

  50. DB Says:

I have this idea in my head of the movie ending with America at large thinking Cap is dead, you hear President Truman in the background praising Cap, you see 21 gun salutes and little kids saluting flags, all that patriotic tear-jerking type stuff. Then the scene changes to Cap’s icy “grave” and we see his glove twitch or his eyes open or something (yeah, he’s not waking up yet but just to let the audience know that he’ll be back). It seems so cool in my own head for some reason. Then again I like cheezy movies.

For a long time, I couldn’t picture anybody but Matt Damon as Cap but maybe the casting people will make one of those great choices, like Downey Jr. as Stark, that seem so obvious yet you’d never think of it yourself.

  51. matt- Says:

Well, like i said on the imdb boards, this is indeed the perfect setting. All ww2. Of course we should get bucky. Not sidekick bucky so much as highly trained soldier bucky. Not a kid bucky, but a young (19?) soldier. Build that he is a major badass just like in the brubaker books. He does what a man wrapped in a flag cant.

The Avengers movie should be the “man out of time” and his guilt over leading bucky to his death.

Cap 2 should be some form of the winter soldier story. It would be the only thing really that cap would want to do alone.
“Sorry nick, tony…this is something i need to handle on my own.” this will disconnect him from the avengers for his own sequel and still be believable.

It cant be Cap Vs. anyone for the sequel because people would just ask “why doesnt he call thor to help with these serpent guys”

  52. Komikfan Says:

    Just one request: PLEASE…KEEP…ZAK…PENN…AWAY… FROM…THIS…MOVIE!!!

If he’s already written a script, THROW IT OUT!!! There are SO MANY writers, some of whom have already WORKED on Marvel Productions, who can pull this off! Alvin Sargent…Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus…heck, even Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty have bailed on Superman…GET ANY OF THEM!!! PLEASE!!!

  53. Rich Says:

I could see the outfit going the Ultimate route with combat boots and an update. I could also see him in dungarees (like on the cover of the Red, White, and Blue anthology) or more realistic as in ‘The Chosen’ with the chainmail. Cap didn’t look silly at all in Breitweiser’s realistic style.

Re: casting, my only concern about Damon would be his age. The guy is 38, and I’m not sure your ideal super soldier candidates would be guys pushing 40 (or even 30).

  54. Gatewave Says:

    awesommmeeeee….

    I was hoping for this.

I hope we see that old-fashioned cap costume with the goggles…

  55. Garth Says:

I’m not excited for a movie that ends with Cap being frozen…

  56. Ortiz Says:

    Comment by Max:
“The other problem with Cap’s massappeal status is the general antipathy a lot of the world feels for the US and its patriotism obsession. So I don’t know how a hero who embosies these things is going to do at the box office.”

It all depends on the script, I think the wise move was the WWII background, and after that the “man out of time” like in Ultimates or The Twelve. Also in 2011 there will be a new president, maybe the international image of USA would be better, and just for the record, I’m not american or live in the US. Peace.

  57. Max Says:

Yes, the man out of time theme/idea is the best way to go for Cap. It is and has always been a fantastic concept in the comics(am currently loving the 12) and should be for the big screen also.
As for the costume the ultimates style is definitley the way to go with very dark colours. maybe even make him all dark blue with a basically normal GI uniform and have just the classic Cap top from the waist up, or the flag ala USAgent. I actually thought USAgent in the Invaders looked cool and could be the way to go.
Just some ideas, and for the record I’d love it if the classic normal Cap outfit could be used but I just don’t think It’d work.

  58. Rich Lane Says:

Funny, everyone here is citing movies like Saving Private Ryan and such, but the minute I heard it was going to be set in WWII, I immediately thought of Raiders of the Lost Arc.

That did pretty well, didn’t it?

  59. Frankie Thirteen Says:

    This is great news!

I expect both Captain America and The Avengers will be shot within the same period of time, much like the Matrix sequels, in order to make release dates two months apart. Also, the title makes much more sense now when viewed with all of these facts giving context. I was originally wary of Cap and Avengers coming out in the same summer, but if the end of Cap leads directly into Avengers, that’ll be pretty awesome.

  60. Eric Says:

I think it would make more sense to have an intro with Cap in WWII and then have the rest of the film set in the present with him adjusting. Having him be as powerful as he is in WWII just seems direspectful to the troops who actually fought.

  61. Seed Says:

    Thank you Marvel Studios

  62. Dallas Barr Says:

Marvel Studios are hitting it hard… This is a very ambitious gameplan, and they better start with a superb film or the whole plan goes down the drain. I, for one, am excited but I AM afraid it’s a bit overambitious.

  63. Kevin Says:

This should be cool, it needs to be set in WWII. I’ personally like to see it end w/ Cap falling into freezing North Atlantic, getting entombed in ice slab, after disabling a rocket, credits roll over ceremoies honoring cap/historical updates from our society & then a coda with SHIELD vessel finding somthing in water with life signs, Fury calling Tony & saying we may have found something you’d be interested in

  64. Kevin Says:

on my comment of historical updates i mean touchpoints from past 40+ years ie: ve day from times square, korea, civil rights struggle, vietnam, spece race, pop culture changes(music/movies/television), politcal changes, various tragedies & triumphs all culminating to the coda after the credits SHIELD finding Cap’s tomb.

  65. Paul Says:

I’m very happy to hear this. I hated the fact that in the last Captain America movie they attempted that they had him in present day when there is so much to explore in the World War II era.

If I hear the news that they’ll be including Bucky too then I’ll think I’ll have to do my happy dance :P

On a side note… I do not think they should show Cap being frozen in this movie. Save that for the opening of the Avengers… or better yet keep it as a mystery for now how he ended up in that block of ice. I’d like to see them continue to explore the Second World War in a Captain America 2 movie. That way they can keep Cap exploring the present day in future Avengers movies. He is the heart of the team and they need to have personal development of some characters in the Avengers. I can’t see them doing this for Iron Man or the Hulk… it’s better they’re explored in their own movie. Thor… well… who knows how they’ll handle Thor? I just hope Don Blake is somehow involved in Thor arriving on Earth.

As to other Avengers characters (which someone else mentioned)… there’s no evidence that they’ll be included. Hank Pym will be in the Ant-Man movie… but no connection between Ant-Man has been mentioned by Marvel. When they talk about Avengers movies they only mention Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America. Wasp belongs with Hank Pym so wherever he ends up I’m sure he will. Hawkeye could make an appearance in the Avengers or a future Iron Man movie or his own movie. His fate is really up in the air. The only other primary Avenger characters are the Vision (who has his origins mixed up with that of Ultron and the original Human Torch… which would be very complicated), Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. The latter two have an equal connection to the X-Men franchise which is controlled by 20th Century Fox. Also as the Vision is the original Human Torch… one must assume that the rights to that original Human Torch character are tied up with the Fantastic Four movie which is also controlled by Fox.

  66. Jack Spicer Says:

Cap’s look is iconic. He looks cool when Epting draws the classic suit. When you change it, you end up with that silly motorcycle look from the 70’s.

  67. captainzero Says:

To me, this is a great way to introduce the Captain America character to the “General Public”. To set his origin, and some of his adventures in the WWII era is really the way “to go”.
When I think of what this movie could be …I think of Indiana Jones- Raiders of the Lost Ark- and the reminiscence of the Saturday afternoon serials of the ’40’s and early 1950’s kind of adventure story… with Captain America (and, I sincerely hope, Bucky) fighting the Nazis and the Red Skull and Baron Zemo… and the movie reminding us of the patriotic feelings we had for America in the 1940’s.
(Some have lost that Patriotic Spirit since the Anti-American undermining of our Country by the enemies on the Left and their attempts to try to destroy America started by the Leftists of the ’60’s…which continues today.)
Captain America is a symbol of the Greatness of our Country… it’s fight for Liberty…and individual freedom… and Democracy… which the Left so violently opposes.
I hope this movie revives some of that Patriotic feeling… and shows Captain America (and Bucky) fighting the Nazi fascists and all those who would try to take our Freedom and Liberty from us.
To include The Human Torch, Toro, and Namor, the Sub-Mariner,… would also be “very cool”. We would really get the sense of the Marvel Universe in the 1940’s setting… showing that Captain America wasn’t the only Marvel Hero during those dark days of World War II… that he wasn’t unique.
And Namor could even show himself in The Avengers Movie throwing the “ice totem” into the water… that The Avengers find on their way to battle The Hulk AND Namor.

Ya know,– Stan and Jack laid out a beautiful, interwoven story… that would be great to follow.

(The “movies” won’t, though. The “movies” have made Nick Fury a Samuel L. Jackson-black… which takes the “real” Nick Fury out of the World War II story-line. [See: Sgt. Fury and his Howlin' Commandos #12.] which seems a shame to me. So, …they’ll screw it up… but hopefully, not toooo bad.
This movie can wonderfully lay the “ground-work” for understanding the character of Captain America… and what makes him so “Legendary”. To give each of these Marvel characters their own movie first, …and then, team them up together,– is the very Right thing to do.
To just throw a bunch of characters together like DC was trying to do with the Justic League of America movie …was the “wrong thing” to do. But DC doesn’t really know how to do things… so, it figures. They are “way screwed up”.

Stan and Jack knew how to build a Universe… and bring things together just at the right time. DC… not so much.
As far as the suit… I like Jack’s rendition.
Hope the Avengers are Thor, IronMan, Ant-Man, the Wasp… and a belligerent Hulk. After The Hulk’s departure… the Avengers find a frozen Captain America.
I’ll say it again… Stan and Jack knew how to tell a story… and those who are doing the movies should take note.

  68. captainzero Says:

    Quick addition:
Yea, The Avengers find Captain America… and in their search for the rampaging Hulk… they team-up with The Fantastic Four… in a real “donny-brook”…against The Hulk. WHAT A TERRIFIC MOVIE that would be!!!
Ahhhh…. if the makers of movies could only “read” comicbooks.!!!

  69. angeldoggie Says:

This is awesome !!! Cap set in WWII is the best starting point for the character to be introduced to newbies as well as a real treat for us established fans. I would love to see the Avengers movie deal with reviving him into todays world……….at least the first half of the movie.

  70. Cole Moore Odell Says:

I love how captainzero rails against all supposed Anti-American evils of his weird straw-man version of “the left” then praises Jack Kirby…who based Darkseid on Richard Nixon, as Mark Evanier just pointed out a couple of days ago.

  71. Kenneth Caroli Says:

The WW2 setting as an introduction fits their plan to set the Thor mainly in Asgard after either showing him in Iron Man 2 or at least forshadowing him in one way or another. With Thor they might show the hammer fall as in the recent relaunch or have it discovered archaeologicly. Perhaps Donald Blake will be referred to or depicted in a cameo, if he is going to be used once The Avengers brings Thor into a modern setting. As for Cap I could see his modern awakenning either hnted at in his own film or in the Avengers.Given the planned release dates I suspect they will forshadow his return at least.
With Thor when he appears in the present They will probably mix the original with the Ultimate version.Much as I love the winged helmet and cape they might look comical in a modern context though they doubtless will be used in Asgard.I hope the revised script leads more smoothly to Thor’s appearing in modern times as previous synopses suggested he learned his lesson of humility in medieval times, undercutting the original reason Odin sent him to Earth. While I can imagine various other scenarios most are not very close to the original.I can even see the humility lesson being only a partial motive but to dispence with it does change the character quite a bit.
I would probably extend the bit in the comics where Odin revealed why he sent Thor to Earth, for breaking a treaty with the giants out of pride and lack of forthought. That would give a chance to show Loki’s plotting etc.. Then Loki could be imprisonned at the end for his actions and Thor exiled to Earth. The modern timing could be tied to Loki’s escape perhaps much as occurred early on in Thor and the Avengers. But the linkage of past to present has to be done carefully for both Thor and Cap.

  72. captainzero Says:

In response to Cole Moore Odell’s comment above: In a case of life immitating art, Indiana Jones really has pissed off the Russians.

Communist Party members in Russia want to ban Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull from local theaters, calling it anti-Soviet propaganda that distorts history.

The action-adventure blockbuster is set in 1957 and finds everyone’s favorite aging archaeologist (Harrison Ford) racing against an evil Russian KGB agent (Cate Blanchett) to track down a legendary skull with otherworldly powers.

“It’s rubbish,” said Sergei Malinkovich, a leader for the St. Peterburg Communist Party. “In 1957 the Communists did not run with crystal skulls throughout the U.S. Why should we agree to that sort of lie and let the West trick our youth?”

Another angered Soviet even wants to ban the movie’s stars from entering Russia.

“Harrison Ford and Cate Blanchett [are] second-rate actors, serving as the running dogs of the CIA,” the communist member wrote on a blog. “We need to deprive these people of the right of entering the country.”

We’d laugh…but, seriously, we don’t want Communists coming after us, too.

Ha-Ha!! You “lefties” are all the same!! And you make no sense.

The point being,– this is a great way to introduce Captain America to the General Public– by having his adventures set in WWII. This seems to be “the way to do it.”

  73. tristan Says:

you all are spitting out names and names for captain america based on build and a list actors and wrestlers and what not, but in reality it really does not matter what we have to say who we want to be captain america. All the names that were given were horrible choices because of conflicting roles in similar movies. If you want capt. america to be a great movie they need to cast someone who has not been in a superhero movie yet or has been huge in movies. You want somenoe who is young so they can make sequels and the actor can star in the avengers. Here is a problem with every name given and then i will share my choice and the reason y.

Brad Pitt-too old, and he is Achilles-not a superhero
Thomas Jane-is the Punisher nothing else
    Ryan Reynolds-Already cast as deadpool
    Chris Evans-Human Torch
    Damon-jason bourne
    Josh Duhamel-Transformers
Matthew Fox-Speed Racer and not blonde
    Scott Speedman-Underworld
Paul Walker-just not right say no more

If we want this to be a good movie either pick someone from television or from a action based movie but not one that has anything to do with comics or cartoons.

The three choices i put forward are
Jensen Ackles-from supernatural, has played a strong character on supernatural and can pull of the capt role, also has played a lil part of the good guy so he can pull of steve.

Mike Vogel-did a great job as the good guy/boy scout in Posiedon, also did awesome as a leader in Cloverfield. Everyone is stating the height as a negative but in reality in todays industry they can alter that.

Finally Justin Hartley- he was Oliver Queen in Smallville and also Aquaman in the failed pilot for the CW.

These three i believe are the best choices because they are somewhat of unknowns even though Hartley has played superhero roles on tv he has the experience of being the superhero and fits the role, vogel is right for the role but his height is what people are saying is a negative and like i said in the industry today that can be fixed and ackles has dealt with supheroes. These three choices are young up and coming actors and are types that i can really see developing into the part.

Okay I have some stuff I would like to say: Leonardo DiCapio would NOT make a good Captain America.

Captain America——They need to get Jensen Ackles for the Catpain. He’s tough, he has great humor, an American acsent, about the right age, and has the face of a hero. Jensen Ackles is also great in Supernatural, and he can be great in Captain America. People just need to give him a chance. Viggo Mortensen for Red Skull. He is also a tough guy, great actor, and would be a great villain.

Thor——-I have no idea who could be Thor, but I think the villain needs to be Loki. Loki should be played by Mathew Marsden. He has that personality, that could make him a trickster and a villain.

Iron Man 2——Chow Yun Fat should be the Mandarin. He’s a great actor. He is tough. He was awesome in Pirates. He would make the perfect villain. Also keep all the cast fom the last movie.

“The other problem with Cap’s massappeal status is the general antipathy a lot of the world feels for the US and its patriotism obsession. So I don’t know how a hero who embosies these things is going to do at the box office.”

This is ridiculous. A movie that embodies the American way of life is EXACTLY what this movie should be about. Patriotism IS part of our history and culture. To hell with anyone else in the world who sees it differently. Americans are among the most generous people in all of the world and we should NEVER forget that!
