First look: Superman from MK vs. DC Universe

May 21st, 2008
Author Kevin Melrose

The official website for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe provides the first looks at Superman and a destroyed Metropolis from the upcoming video-game mashup. The site also has high-resolution shots of Scorpion and some kind of hell-like arena. Previously, we’d been shown Batman and Sub-Zero.

Shouldn’t Superman just be able to heat vision people to death.

Or I wonder if the goal for Superman is to incapacitate people without killing them.

  2. statnut Says:

Superman looks a little too calm to be standing in a destroyed Metropolis. Shouldnt he be crying?

  3. ElCoyote's Prophet Says:

Looks really shaky. He looks cut and pasted into that pic. Ick.

If that’s what people are getting on XBoxes and PS3s I’m not impressed, a lot of detail, little style, and it just don’t look GOOD.

Makes me want to bust out Twilight Princess just to look at a video game that looks nice.

How hard would it be for Warner Bros to hire a decent developer to do a Superman game? Is it that hard? That expensive? I guess they figure ‘we can make shitty games and fanboys buy them and we make money, why bother with GOOD ones?’

Same way they make movies, I guess.

  4. Squishydoodle Says:

Looks like the characters from MK should be worried!

  5. kiddae Says:

Still don’t get MK vs. DC, but that’s a nice Supes.

  6. Jeff Says:

The jokes about Superman crying have been overplayed. Seriously. Let it go.

    The game itself looks interesting!

  7. KryptoKnight Says:

I have been putting off buying a 360 all this time, but this game might just force me into it.

I know it won’t be gory like the other MK games, but I really couldn’t care less about that because I’m not a 14 year old emo kid having trouble with mom’s new boyfriend.

  8. Erech Says:

Yes, because 14 year old emo kids were always the demographic for Mortal Kombat games… Good call KK. Good call.

    Good call.

  9. Erech Says:

    (pssst – good call)

  10. Lolxomic Says:

    I too am not a Emo/Marvel whore,This looks awesome.

  11. john Says:

“He looks cut and pasted into that pic”
That’s because he was cut and pasted over the concept art…

  12. Mercer Says:

Obviously, that’s not an in-game shot, but that looks considerably better than Batman came off in the trailer.

I dunno, I’m reasonably excited for this, and I know what DC and Midway are trying to do, but this really came about six or seven years too late. Plus, Capcom’s more cartoony style blended with superheroes much better than MK’s more subdued style, so I wonder how they’re going to balance that.

    “I too am not a Emo/Marvel whore,This looks awesome.” — Lolxomic

Hey now…when did Marvel whores get dragged into this??
And why are we being lumped together with emo dorks?
And why are emo dorks whores?

    …whores?

  14. Dave Says:

Haha yes, ElCoyote, Nintendo clearly has the best graphics because a Mortal Kombat game is aesthetically unappealing.

Midway has ALWAYS had a history of such beautiful art direction I JUST DON’T KNOW WHAT WENT WRONG THIS TIME.

  15. John Says:

I don’t understand why people are adding Marvel into this, let alone putting down emo kids or that Superman should cry because Metroplois looks like it’s in dire straits. I think this is a very interesting pairing up, it has great potential, and I can’t wait for the game to come out. My opinion on the all the images that newsarama has shown thus far relating to this subject has been absolutely amazing and great. This current one featuring Superman, the first thought that came to my mind was, the calm before the storm. Superman is looking at the great city that he protects, only to see it in near ruins, so of course he’s going to find out who is behind it and once he does, it’s just like the saying goes, “you don’t mess with the S”. I wonder which MK character is going to have the guts to try and pull on Superman’s cape? Oh this is so on and I can’t wait. I’m very excited about this.

  16. Shaun Says:

Too bad Supes never looks that good, or imposing, in the movies! Not that I’m sure who they should get to pull off that look in live action, but that’s pretty much how I want him to look in a movie.

  17. Brion Says:

I seriously cannot wait for this video game, has anyone checked out the midway forms? It’s pretty humorous, everybody over there is freaking out over this, “This MK is the downfall! blah blah blah, I know more than you know blah blah blah.”
All I know, come the fall, we’ll finally have a decent fighting game staring the cream of the crop of DC and MK fighters.
Now can someone beg Midway for Power Girl?!

  18. spid3y Says:

I agree, Superman looks pretty cool, and imposing.

He has that proud / butt kicking look going, for all we know, he’s probably the one that destroyed Metropolis to show those MK guys he means business.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he went crying on Batman’s shoulder after this though

  19. Jim Says:

Looks really shaky. He looks cut and pasted into that pic. Ick.

    It’s concept art, foo.

  20. s*p rules Says:

Too bad Supes never looks that good, or imposing, in the movies!

Hey now, granted the last Superman movie was a giant, mis-casted ball-suck-fest, but don’t go putting down Christopher Reeve, who was a fantastic Supes (and it’s not his fault III and IV were horrible).

Right now, I’m very much regretting the $50 I spent on the Iron Man game (speaking of sucking balls), but maybe I’ll be over it by fall and pick up this game. The superman pic looks great.

  21. John Says:

I know it’s easy for fans to express their opinion based on what something or someone reminds them of, but let’s remember what the true subject is, this is about the new video game coming out that will feature Mortal Kombat and the DC Universe. There seems to be somewhat of a debate whether or not this is a cut and paste job, but none of that should matter. We’ve seen a face off between Batman and Sub-Zero and now we see Superman looking over a fallen Metropolis, it looks like things are picking up for this game and I don’t know about any of you, but that’s good news for me. I can’t wait for this game to come out.

  22. edc Says:

And why are emo dorks whores?

    I dunno, they just are.

  23. Coming Curse Says:

    ElCoyote’s Prophet
How are you enjoying GTA 4? Awesome isn’t it? Oh that’s right, you can’t play it because Wii isn’t powerful enough to run it. Then enjoy your game about elves, Pretty Princess or whatever it’s called.

Then again, maybe you should just ask your mom to buy you a 360 so you can stop bitterly trolling threads about Xbox/PS3 games which you will never be able to play.

  24. scorpionspupil Says:

check mortalkombatonline.com for the best MK related news, it’s a very reliable site

anywho the cut/paste debacle is as simple as this, Midway recently released concept art for two stages Hell and Metropolis, when they released the Supes render they released it on a white background, a black background, and pasted over the metropolis concept art

now this doesn’t knock the render itself though, it is a good render with alot of detail, notice the stubble, and the grain of the spandex, and I for one am glad Midway opted to not coat it in that high shine you get in alot of next gen games (tekken, soul calibur) cause that usually just ends up with the character looking like they took a bath in KY jelly

next monday midway will be releasing another render of either Batman or Sub-Zero.

  25. Shaun Says:

    Hey s*p rules,

I wasn’t trying to “dis” Chris Reeve in what I said earlier… He was great, even if the movies he starred in (yep, I’m including the first two as well) weren’t so hot. I know it’s blasphemy to knock Supes: The Movie, but that just hasn’t aged well at all. And that long, dull opening on sterile-looking Krypton? Ugh. But Reeve was great in the role, no question.

Anyhow, Reeve’s not to blame for any shortcomings in the films, nor is he (or Donner) to blame for how awful Supes Returns was. I was really thinking more of Brandon Routh when I made my statement.

Not that he was all that bad either (the movie had far bigger problems), but the image shown here is really the kind of look a live-action Superman needs, along with a total reboot that ups the ante on epic, cosmic adventure.

  26. elvee Says:

The logo isn’t tiny and there’s no mullet, so I’m good with this.

  27. D Says:

Here’s hoping they put a secert “weird” character in the game like Doom Patrol, Plastic Man, Vertigo Shade the Changing Man, or Flex Mentello.

Hell if one of the levels was Danny the Street, that would be awesome.

  28. Byron Dunn Says:

The more I think about this the more it seems like a bad idea for all parties involved. But that’s a damn good render and likely what it will look like on 360 and PS3.

Even though he’s technically a Vertigo character, I want Bigby Wolf in this.

Here is the decision in the Siegel family’s copyright claim for the rights to Superman.

    In case anyone is interested.

  30. kiknarse Says:

If that is what superman REALLY looks like in the game…he looks LAME and GAY!

Yes pls just hire real game developers to make a GREAT superman game…the latest superman movie SUCKED too btw.

Have Tom the super-boy from Smallville play superman for christ sake.

Get rid of that Lex too from teh movie sheesh … have superman fight REAL supervillians … not some damn ordinary punk he can blast with his heat vision or god damn superhuman speed.

Superman must really be super stupid. Let’s give him super “batman’s” brain!

  31. Mayor of Kentonville Says:

    Could be great?

  32. Sadisticon Says:

Wow kiknarse; things must be real slow at the asylum.

  33. Sadisticon Says:

I’m waiting for a redemptive Superman video gaming experience, but I swear everything the big guy touches turns to poison. I wish this endeavour luck and yes, I will pony up my hard earned just for the familiar red flying man – sigh.

One day I won’t be disappointed, but I’ll be as faithful as Snoopy to Charlie Brown until then.
