The Incredible Hulk’s CGI gets a little fine-tuning

"The Incredible Hulk" CGI comparisons

When the first trailer for The Incredible Hulk debuted in March, there were complaints online — shocking, I know — about the quality of the CGI, specifically the appearance of the Green Goliath. Some went so far as to say it was worse than Gumby-esque Hulk in the Ang Lee film.

But if you caught the three new TV commercials over the weekend, you may have noticed the movie’s special effects have been fine-tuned.

You mean you didn’t notice? Well, that’s okay, because Alex Billington of First Showing did. He even provides the above visual aid comparing an image from the teaser trailer (top) with one of the new TV spots (bottom). In the shot, the Hulk’s skin tone appears to have been tweaked, his hair has been given more detail, and he’s been given the remnants of a shirt.

Is it an improvement? I don’t know. Of course, I didn’t have a problem with his appearance in the initial trailer … The Incredible Hulk opens on June 13.

I’d have to see it in action. My problems were with the movement of the character. He looks like jello when he moves. Reminds me of Shrek, and not in a good way.

  2. Simon DelMonte Says:

Any chance they will tweak what seems like a rather pedestrian plot while they’re at it?

  3. Shaun Says:

I didn’t mind the look that much the first time. No, Hulk didn’t look astoundingly great… But better and less “cartoony” than he did in the Ang Lee film. IMO.

Anyhow, the new look is an improvement nonetheless. The hair’s a little more mussed, and not so “plastic” looking now. Adding the ripped shirt is a nice touch as well.

I don’t expect TIH to be as good as Iron Man, and certainly not as good as I expect Dark Knight to be, but I’m expecting an entertaining film that helps tie together the new Marvel “movie universe.”

I think Norton will be good, the action will be kicked up a few notches, the story will be less esoteric than the last attempt, and (best of all) Nick Nolte will be completely absent from this movie. Bring it on!

  4. Erech Says:

Looks a little better. He still looks like a big glob of plastic, the sheen from his skin is just unnatural looking.

Hopefully they can go back in and fix the Hulk movie figures now - oh wait, it’s too late for that you say? Boo.

  5. chrishaley Says:

    Better.

  6. Pyramid Says:

So they gave him a shirt? Big whoop. Still needs a MAJOR revamp in SFX before the Hulk looks real. The ONLY reason I’ll be seeing this movie is Edward Norton. To bad the Hulk looks nothing like him.

  7. snikt snakt Says:

after the Ang Lee debacle, I have zero interest in any Hulk movies. I’ll wait for cable on this one…

  8. Eric S Says:

Except for Ang Lee’s face, I liked the way Hulk looked in the first film.

  9. Jerry Livengood Says:

Wah Wah Wah, get off the computer and go get you’re bottles.

Really? People are complaining that 10′ Green mosnter’s skin looks unnatural? Guess what, the character is unnatural. Do you have a real life reference of the Hulk they could work off then? And Ferrigno doesn’t count.

How about you save the complaints until after the movie comes out and you see it on the big screen.

  10. Artiepants Says:

well, the teaser trailer was a total debacle, but the full trailer was much better done, and looking around the Hulk in that shot, looks like a lot of lighting and color work has been done, which was one of my major complaints, the lighting in the teaser looked t-e-r-r-i- b-l-e.

  11. Jason M. Bryant Says:

The original peak we got of the Hulk in Ang Lee’s version looked horrible. Then they put out another commercial with the exact same scenes, yet the Hulk looked significantly better. Then what we saw in the theatres looked even better.

This stuff gets tweaked right up until the end because this kind of effects takes a lot of work. However, they have to have commercials before the movie comes out and they can’t promote a Hulk movie without showing the Hulk. So really, there’s just no way for them to do decent promotion for the movie without showing us stuff that isn’t done yet.

Plus, a lot of stuff is more forgiving when you’re actually watching the movie. When you watch a 2 minute trailer, you’re trying to squeeze every bit of meaning possible out of every second. You don’t get swept up in it like you do when watching the actual movie. There will definitely be people who complain once the movie is out, there always are, but I think most of us are going to be happy with how the Hulk looks.

  12. Matthew Craig Says:

See also the original Spider-Man trailer, in which Spidey changes bloody costumes between trailer and theatrical release.

…the last Hulk movie had Masi Oka working on it (/everybody already knew this).

    //\Oo/\\

  13. Alex Hart Says:

Most of the time, the effects in trailers aren’t finished. A lot of effects are worked on up until the last minute. Case in point: Mystique’s morphing effect in the first X-Men trailer vs. the finished effect in the movie. Completely different. Also, I thought the Hulk looked great in the first movie.

  14. pat Says:

    huh … getting better …

  15. D Says:

Am I the only one who enjoyed Ang Lee’s movie? (except for the weird jellyfish thing at the end)

It was an art house super hero movie cleverly disguised as a brain dead popcorn movie. If they can add the same depth to the next movie I’d love to see it.

  16. Bob Funn Says:

This is interesting because this doesn’t have nearly the ‘buzz’ that iron man did. perhaps it’s a good thing that this movie doesn’t do ‘Iron Man’ business perhaps then Marvel will see that quality rules and the right people involved mean quality and money.

The new trailer with stuff blowing up and hulk growling in every shot cracks me up.

“Look america! its really cool cause shit blows up!”

  17. Mike Rutschky Says:

    Debacle.

    We love this word.

  18. Nate Says:

Not a suprise really. Take a look at the earlier Iron Man trailers in the scene where his wrist missle hits the tank. Pretty awful CG there, now take a look at the actual movie.

I think that everyone will bitch about this movie even if it’s awsome. I’m just hoping for fun.

  19. Panji Sudoyo Says:

I’m expecting some fun as well..and i’ll be one of the first in line in my country to watch this. Looks much better than Ang Lee’s disaster.
    Can’t wait.

  20. Coming Curse Says:

I don’t get all of the complaining about the way Hulk looks in the trailer OR in the Ang Lee movie. I hate to break it to you guys, but the technology is not there to make photo-realistic CGI humanoid characters. There’s no way to do a Hulk movie and have it look 100% realistic.

  21. Coming Curse Says:

    Bob Funn

No crap the trailer has stuff blowing up. It’s a Hulk movie! Were you expecting an introspective character study!?
    BWAHAHA!!!

  22. MadHatter 72 Says:

Give me your addresses and I’ll
send you all a box of freaking tissues.

    CGI or NOT?
