Can't Wait For Wednesday!

It’s a good week for vampires — or at least fans of vampire comics.

Two big vampire-themed releases come from First Second: the all-ages Little Vampire, by Joann Sfar, and the decidedly more mature Life Sucks, by Jessica Abel, Gabe Soria and Warren Pleece. But this week also sees the second collection of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Season 8, the second volume of Blood +, the debut issues of Lost Boys: Reign of Frogs and BloodRayne: Tokyo Rogue, the penultimate issue of Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: Guilty Pleasures, the eighth volume of Chibi Vampire … and probably a few other titles that I’ve missed.

But it’s not all vampires. Wednesday also marks the beginning of the much-anticipated “Batman R.I.P.” storyline, the conclusion of the second volume of Casanova, and the first release in Marvel’s partnership with French publisher Soleil.

To see what other titles Chris Mautner and I think are worth mentioning, just keep reading. As always, let us know your choices in the comments below.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Chris’ pick of the week: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner hardcover

I’m always completely floored by Hunt Emerson’s work whenever I glimpse it, yet for some reason the man remains persona non grata to much of the comics industry, both here and in the UK. I at a loss as to explain why, especially when books like this mind-blowing adaptation of Coleridge’s poem — in the best Mad/Harvey Kurtzman tradition — exist.

Originally published in 1989, this is a new, hardcover reprinting of the work from the British publisher Knockabout, and it really deserves your attention. A sampling of sorts can be found here.

Kevin’s pick of the week: Batman #676

Batman #676

Despite my love of Grant Morrison’s writing, I haven’t been a faithful reader of his Batman run. I think I expected to be drawn in by his take on the Dark Knight, much as I was by his vision of the Man of Steel in All-Star Superman. Instead, I found the Batman in those initial issues — “Batman & Son” — to be enjoyable enough, but nothing extraordinary. (I was never a big Batman fan, so “enjoyable enough” doesn’t cut it for me.)

I probably should’ve had more faith, and patience. The storyline that kicks off with this issue, “Batman R.I.P.,” is the one that Morrison intended to open his tenure on the series. Instead, it was decided to build toward it. So here we are, the arc that Morrison says “is the end of Bruce Wayne as Batman.”

Of course, nobody believes it’ll actually be the end of Bruce Wayne as Batman — especially with Batman: The Dark Knight opening in July. Plus, we’ve seen someone else take up the mantle before. But we’ve never seen it as written by Grant Morrison.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8, Vol. 2: No Future For You

Kevin: The second volume of the much-discussed Season 8 features writer Brian K. Vaughan and the return of fan-favorite character Faith.

Batman: The Resurrection of Ra’s Al Ghul hardcover

Kevin: In case you didn’t bounce from Bat-book to Bat-book following the crossover that resurrected (again) Ra’s Al Ghul, this 256-page collects everything in one slightly pricey volume: Batman Annual #26, Batman #670-671, Robin #168-169, Robin Annual #7, Nightwing #138-139 and Detective Comics #838-839.

Booster Gold, Vol. 1

Booster Gold, Vol. 1: 52 Pick Up hardcover
Booster Gold #9

Chris: I have to say, considering I never cared much for Geoff Johns’ work beforehand, this is a pretty enjoyable superhero series. It treads the line nicely between “continuity-laden” and “stand-alone” so that newcomers won’t feel utterly lost but hardcore mavens can still feel catered to. Plus, it’s got a good sense of humor about itself. The trade collects the first six issues.

Final Crisis: Sketchbook

Kevin: If you’re one of those who thought DC Universe: Zero was just a 32-page ad for Final Crisis, you’ll probably feel the same way about this, a 32-page look behind the scenes of DC’s big summer event. Still, I’m a process junkie, and a fan of J.G. Jones and Grant Morrison, so I won’t complain about being shown how the sausage is made.

Green Lantern: No Fear trade paperback

Kevin: Geoff Johns’ well-received reformation of Hal Jordan gets a trade paperback, collecting Green Lantern #1-6 and Green Lantern Secret Files #1.

The Huntress: Year One #1 (of 6)

Kevin: Outside of Birds of Prey, this version of the Huntress — mafia daughter Helena Betinelli — has been little more than a supporting character since her introduction almost 20 years ago. I presume this Year One miniseries, by Ivory Madison and Cliff Richards, will seek to remedy that.

Vertigo First Cut

Vertigo: First Cut trade paperback

Kevin: The second of Vertigo’s big first-issue samplers, this trade paperback gathers the premieres of Army@Love, Crossing Midnight, DMZ, The Exterminators, Jack of Fables, Loveless and Scalped. I realize collected editions are forever, but it’s a bit, I don’t know, sad that more than nearly half of the series represented here — Crossing Midnight, The Exterminators and Loveless — have been canceled.

Casanova #14

Chris: The second arc comes to an end. We find out what happened to our hero. Revelations are made. Previews are found here.

Captain Britain And MI: 13 #1

Captain Britain And MI: 13 #1

Kevin: Is this the first ongoing series spawned by Secret Invasion? I think so. This title, by Paul Cornell and Leonard Kirk, brings the MI: 13 organization from Cornell’s Wisdom MAX miniseries together with Captain Britain to fend off the Skrull invasion as it reaches the shores of the United Kingdom.

GeNext #1 (of 5)

Kevin: Is this the future of fan entitlement? I’m kidding. Mostly. A while back visitors to Marvel.com voted on what should be Chris Claremont’s next project. This book, a sort-of What If? involving the children of the X-Men and what would happen if the Marvel Universe progressed in something resembling real time, is the result. Don’t blame me, I didn’t vote.

Giant-Size Incredible Hulk #1

Kevin: This one-shot, by classic Hulk writer Roger Stern and artists Zach Howard and Cory Hamscher, follows former Hulk sidekick Fred Sloan as he travels across the country gathering stories of how the Green Goliath touched people’s lives. Touched, not smashed. The issue also reprints 1978’s Incredible Hulk Annual #7, by Stern, John Byrne and Bob Layton.

New X-Men by Grant Morrison, Book 1

New X-Men by Grant Morrison Ultimate Collection, Book 1 trade paperback

Kevin: Bless Marvel for collecting Grant Morrison’s revolutionary, and somewhat controversial, run on New X-Men in three enormous trade paperbacks. This 376-page volume brings together Issues 114-126 and Annual 2001.

newuniversal: Shockfront #1 (of 6)
Psi-Force Classic, Vol. 1

Chris: Wow, I had almost forgotten about this. Warren Ellis’ revamp of Marvel’s long-disdained New Universe line returns, now with Steve Kurth doing the art. I’m in for at least the first few issues. If you like your New Universe old school, though, you can always go with the Psi-Force classic trade. It’s one of the few Marvel comics I actually ever subscribed to in the mail, and I remember regretting that decision pretty much by the second issue.

Sky Doll #1

Sky Doll #1 (of 3)

Chris: European comics, whether you’re talking about Lewis Trondheim or Moebius, have always been a tough sell on American shores. The most recent example, of course, would be DC’s failed relationship with Humanoids, though one could well argue they weren’t trying very hard. It will be interesting to see how Marvel deal with French publisher Soleil, particularly this series about a bona fide sex robot (I’m being overly glib here) by the creators of the W.I.T.C.H. series, sells.

After School Sex Slave Club

Chris: I’m not sure, but I think this might be pornography.

Life Sucks

Life Sucks

Kevin: There’s something about fantastic creatures depicted in mundane scenarios that I find appealing. So Life Sucks, by Jessica Abel, Gabe Soria and Warren Pleece, hits a certain chord with me (even among some sour notes). After all, you can’t get much more mundane than vampire masters from the Old World operating convenience stores in the United States, and their slacker underlings pining after mortal girls between restocking the beef jerky and rotating the hot dogs. I really like the central character, Dave the reluctant vampire/night manager, but at some point Life Sucks kind of loses its way. I think it’s when the creators move from the aimless, slice-of-life, Clerks-esque “story” to a darker, and somewhat jolting, plotline involving Dave’s competition with another vampire for the heart — and, it turns out, soul — of the goth girl whom Dave loves.

Little Vampire

Little Vampire

Chris: I seem to recall their being a connection between this all-ages Joann Sfar series and the more *ahem* mature Vampire Loves. I think they may even be the same character but the vampire ages in reverse or something like that. I can’t remember it right.

Anyway, this is a cute collection of stories about a lonely little boy who is befriended by a lonely little vampire boy. Together they have amazing adventures. I really enjoyed it.

Lucky Luke, Vol. 10: Tortillas for the Daltons

Chris: I just wanted to say that I’m really happy that Cinebook is bringing this all-ages Western series to the U.S., and I hope retailers interested in getting kids in their store take a chance on it.

Manga Sutra: Futari H, Vol. 2 (of 5)

Chris: Speaking of pornography, here’s the second volume in the “sex for the clueless manga fan” series. Despite my criticisms about the first volume, it was not without its charm, enough that I’m curious to see how the … um … story … um … progresses.

Parasyte, Vol. 3

Parayste, Vol. 3 ( of 8 )

Chris: Oooo, I’ve been waiting for this to come out. Hitoshi Iwaaki’s horror series, about an alien that takes over a teenage boy’s hand, trips up every now and then in the art department, but his imagination is so fertile and deliciously creepy that I’m willing to overlook those flaws.

Erotic Comics: A Graphic History from Tijuana Bibles to Zap Comix

Wacky Packages hardcover

Chris: Oh, those naughty folks at Abrams, publishing this oversize collection of x-rated comical books. According to the Amazon page, it covers roughly the period of the 1930s to the days of the end of the underground scene in the ’70s, with an added look at what the Europeans were doing. Could actually be rather informative.

But if you prefer your coffee-table books a little more sophomoric and less lurid, there’s always this tribute to those series of stickers mocking just about every product Madison Avenue dreamed up. Lots of underground cartoonists worked on this series, most notably Art Spiegelman, but also Jay Lynch and Kim Dietch. I loved these when I was 10.

Toto! Vol. 1

Toto! The Wonderful Adventure, Vol. 1

Kevin: Typically when I see a comic that updates or “reimagines” The Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland, I run in the other direction. But from all that I’ve seen, Yuko Osada’s fantasy adventure gives several nods to L. Frank Baum’s classic novels, but avoids rehashing them. The son of a globe-trotting adventurer, young Kakashi — his name means “scarecrow” in Japanese — yearns to see the world. So, he stows away on a dirigible, and becomes the hostage of bandits. Adventure ensues! I’m looking forward to this one.

Federico Fellini: The Book of Dreams hardcover

Chris: A rather expensive collection of the master filmmaker’s drawings, caricatures and perhaps the occasional comic though I can’t vouch safe for that. Is there a considerable overlap of La Strada/Iron Fist fans?

I’m still not sure about “Batman RIP”… I really, really wanted to enjoy Morrison’s run on Batman. I mean, this is the guy who wrote Arkham Asylum, JLA’s New World Order, We3, and All-Star Superman. Right?

But I’ve been so-o-o disappointed with his Batman run. I don’t know that anything’s been bad necessarily, but nothing’s really had me excited either. In fact, I enjoyed that “Grotesk” fill-in arc, and everything over in Detective Comics, far more than I’ve liked Morrison’s Bat-run.

I ended up dropping Batman — something I never thought I’d do — at the start of the Ra’s Al-Ghul arc (waiting for the hardcover, cuz I didn’t want to buy the crossover books) and haven’t gone back since. Sorry, Grant… Reviving freakin’ *Bat-Mite* is where I draw the line. Can a revamped, Cujo-like, Ace the Bat-hound be far behind?

Maybe I’m just not into Morrison’s “let’s relive the Silver Age” shtick, since I was never a Silver Age reader myself? It’s seems to be DC’s editorial approach of late. I guess I’ll read Batman #676 at the shop tomorrow and see what I think. Maybe I’ll get the trade, or even the hardcover, if I end up liking it enough.

Oh, and “After School Sex Slave Club”… Damn, I clearly missed out when I was in school.

  4. William Clark Says:

I’m looking forward to see what Morrison does with “Batman R.I.P.” even though I have serious doubts that Warner Bros. would allow DC to mess with the franchise. Still, Grant is stating he’s not killing Bruce only making him wish he was dead - well Bruce has wished that before and bounced back.

DC fans have always believed that Bruce Wayne is Batman. It’s up to Grant to prove us wrong. Let’s see if he’s up to the task or did DC take one heck of a gamble?

  5. Jim Says:

What Grant is doing on Batman is nothing short of genius. He isn’t just reviving Silver Age stuff, he’s making it relevant today. Bat-Mite’s more of a hallucination now.

The Club of Heroes arc was the best, imo.

I also dropped Batman. Morrison can be hit or miss, and stuff like Doom Patrol or Seaguy I can re-read every year, but I couldn´t work up any interest whatsoever in this Batman and Son story. Just found it boring and meh.

Same goes for Batman R.I.P. He is dead again? Or whatever? I don´t care for such stories any longer.
